ON THE ACCENTUATION OF A GROUP OF VERBS
The accentuation norms in dictionaries are sometimes rejected and avoided by almost all users of the standard language. What are the reasons? What is going on? Complexity, or a complicated basis for the norms?
1. At one time, an attempt was made to regularize derivatives with the suffix -tuvas (so that one would not have to pronounce puréntuvas, but purintùvas, tintuvai, but tintùvas, etc.).
2. Especially nowadays, the accentuation norms for forms and derived forms of the verbs CC-ieti are unrealistic. There are nine such verbs—their norms are as follows:
a) líeti, líeja (dialectal lėja), líejo (dialectal lėjo), “to pour water”
ríeti, ríeja (dialectal rėja), ríejo (dialectal rėjo)
skriéti, skriéja, skriėjo “to fly”
žviéti, žviéja, žviėjo “to fish”
Related forms also correspond to these: lýti, rýti, “to stuff, to eat”; skrýti (žviéti has no such forms). Derived forms—the passive participles—have likewise adapted: nuríetas, -à, sužviétas, -à, aplíetas, -à.
b) Other verbs of this type vary greatly, while actual usage is taking an entirely different course.
Dictionaries record chiefly gliéti, -ja, -jo, and the forms gliejáu, gliejái, gliejù, gliejì are also cited (in dialects the third-person form varies considerably: present tense glėja, glìena, past tense glìne), LKŽ III 421. Some dialects also have glíeti End, patterned on the four forms mentioned above (cf. also gl’íjau, recorded in Girdiškė in 1964); the form gliéti is also recommended in DŽ₃. Thus users of the standard language are expected to place the stress on the ending in certain forms, but no one can be taught to do this; for example, nobody has ever heard passive participles such as àpglìetas, -à, sùglìetas, -à. The forms àpgliejo, añgliejo, išgliejo recorded by F. Sragis are an anachronism in the accentuation of verb forms—nothing of the sort exists anywhere in the verbal system (perhaps forms were confused with those of the verb glìnti, glìna, glìne?).
The same is true of the verb griéti (LKŽ III 594–595, DŽ₃): griéti, griéja (grėja, griẽna), griéjo (grėjo, griñe, griẽne). Here forms from the verb grìnti, -a, -ė (LKŽ III 612–613) have been mixed in. The forms griejáu, griejái are rarely heard; for example, even LKŽ III 594 records the form atgriejái Ktk—this is an anomaly; such stress placement is impossible. One cannot hear the participles nùgrietas, -à (only nugrié-tas, -à Sug). The confusion must have been caused by those two verbs becoming conflated, separate

c) The form given in all dictionaries and textbooks is lėti, -ja, -jo “to melt, to form”. A circumflex root is recorded only in the westernmost part of Žemaitija (LKŽ VII 444–445), whereas everywhere else only lėti. The accentuation of prefixed forms is archaic or entirely inexplicable: nulėjo, sulėjo, prilėjo, etc. (Could this be from šòl’ėję ~ sulėję, pril’ėję ~ prilėję, with the disyllabic ėi merging with j, and – ā > e (as also – ē > e), or something else. Yet even Žemaitians say the participles nul’ėję, pril’ėję, šol’ėję Krp, Akm, Ub, Eig, Trš, Rdn, nul’ī·c Vn, Grd, Krš, etc. Thus, the greater part of the Lithuanian-speaking area attests to the form lėti, -ja, -jo as good, correct, and suitable for the standard language (cf. lýdyti “to melt (fat, metal)”, lydinys (3ª), etc.
d) For a long time, dictionaries gave only sieti, -ja, -jo (dialect forms: pres. tense siena, sėja, past tense sėnė, sine, sėjo). Apparently, by analogy with the verb sýti, sýja, sýjo, some dialects have sieti, sėja, sėjo Rdn,Krš, Šts, Sd, Eig (LKŽ XII 533 nusisieti is in fact incorrect!), Jdr, Vn, Jrb, etc. Teaching young people siejų, sieji, siejau, siejai, susietas, -à (3ᵇ), pasietas, -à (3ᵇ) rather than siejų, sieji, siejau, siejai, susietas, -à (3), pasietas, -à (3), etc., has not been very successful; even linguists themselves do not use these forms. The link sieti – sýti has archaic features, so the second form given in DŽ₃, sieti, -ja, -jo, is also understandable for the standard language. Incidentally, some records of siēt~ may have been influenced by the standard-language dictionaries through tradition. The forms of Sieti have also become mixed with those of the verb siñti (sinti?), cf. the participle pasintas Lš, Vs, etc.).
e) The circumflex-root verb šliėti, too, was the standard-language norm for many years. Its forms šliėna, šlinė, šliėjo may have come from the verb šliñti. According to LKŽ XIV 1064–1067, šliėti is recorded mostly in one or another eastern or western dialect, while šliėti is recorded by A. Juška and J. Jablonskis in Dkš, and by other collectors in Šts, Rt, Kin, Prk, Ds, Bsg, Ar, Bb, Upt, etc. From there, the forms atšlėjėju, atšlėjau, atšlėjetas, -à (3), prišliėtas, -à, not atšlėjų, prišliėjau, atšlėtas, -à (3ᵇ), prišlietas, -à (3ᵇ), etc., entered the standard language (cf. the noun recorded near Eigirdžiai š’ļ’ėie-mûos pri v’īr’es’n’ū·ju | t’ī·ka kuo). The internal relations among the forms šliėti allowed the DŽ₃ authors to recommend it for the standard language as well (but cf. the forms also given there: pri-šliėtos, su-šliėji! DŽ₃ 618).
There are many forms of various verbs that are not accepted in the standard language, even in the scholarly and spoken language of linguists themselves: for example, nórti, panorsti, panorstù, panorau, panorai, pànortas, pànota, užšinorta; atitòlti, atitolstù, atitolau, atitolai, nùtoltasi, etc. (Forms of verbs with a circumflex accent should be stressed in this way.)
Sometimes, when establishing accentuation norms for the standard language, it is necessary to examine the history of particular words and the system of all their forms. This may bring to light aspects of the establishment and prescription of norms that codifiers did not anticipate or that were entirely accidental.

KARYBOS ŽODYNAS
Išleistas lietuviškas karybos žodynas (Smetona 1995). Čia noriu pateikti truputį žodyno priešistorės ir paliesti kelias problemas, su kuriomis susidūriau jį sudarinėdamas.
Lietuviškos karybos terminijos iki šiol į vieną vietą niekas nebuvo sudėjęs, nors mėginimų ir būta. Pirmasis bandymas – berods P.Rusecko parengtas ir 1919 m. išleistas “Lietuviškai-rusiškas ir rusiškai-lietuviškas karybos terminų žodynėlis”. Jis nedidukas, daug abejotinų arba šiuolaikinės kalbotyros požiūriu net visiškai neteiktinų dalykų. Vėliau, aišku, buvo rašomi statutai, įvairūs vadovai, žinynai, instrukcijos. Tačiau dabar jais nebegalima pasinaudoti, nes pasikeitusi ir ginkluotė, ir kariavimo būdai. Pagaliau juose atsispindėjo būtent to meto kalba – bendrinės kalbos kūrimosi meto kalba. Štai keletas pavyzdžių iš to meto artileristams parengto žodynėlio: vertikalusis įkirtimas – nasečka, rintė – vint, bryliai – zakrainy, šėstarnė – šesternia, Perkūno sidabras – gremučaja rtutj. Žinoma, čia buvo ir puikiai sukurtų, ypač bendrųjų techninių terminų, tačiau visa tai apie rusišką 1902 metų patranką, kuri visiškai nebeaktuali.
Prieš karą karybos terminija bene daugiausia domėjosi J.M.Laurinaitis, Krašto apsaugos ministerijos Terminologijos komisijos pirmininkas. Ketvirtajame dešimtmetyje Generalinio štabo kursuose dėstė ir išsamiau karybos terminiją studijavo A.Salys bei Pr.Skardžius.
