BIBLIOGRAPHY OF CZECH BALTIC STUDIES

František Ladislav Čelakovský is considered the founder of Czech Baltic studies. He supplemented his representative collection of songs from various Slavic peoples with examples of Lithuanian folk poetry (first edition 1827). For this purpose, he learned Lithuanian from Pilypas Ruigys’s 1747 grammar and translated 72 texts from the collection published by Liudvikas Rėza in 1825. Another very important work by Čelakovský is his Lithuanian dictionary, on which he worked from the beginning of the 1820s until his death. The dictionary entries are supplemented with the author’s grammatical and etymological notes—Čelakovský sought in this way to substantiate his idea of a prehistoric relationship between the Czechs and Lithuanians. Unfortunately, he did not manage to complete this work

and the dictionary remained in manuscript1. Pavel Josef Šafařík (1835, 1838), a versatile scholar best known for his work Slovanské starožitnosti, was also interested in Lithuanian folk songs and the Lithuanian language in general. August Schleicher studied Lithuanian as one of the Indo-European languages; he was the first professor of the newly established chair of Indo-European comparative linguistics at Charles University (from 1850). Although of German origin, Schleicher also wrote about the Lithuanian language in Czech (1853). He wrote his most important Lithuanian grammar, supplemented with text excerpts and glosses, in German, but it was published in Prague (1856–1857). This grammar became a powerful impetus for wider interest in the Lithuanian language and folklore, not only in the Czech lands but throughout Europe. In the 1850s, Martin Hattala wrote about the declension of Lithuanian nominal forms, comparing it with the declension of Slavic languages (1857–58). Jan Gebauer (1865, 1882) and Leopold Geitler (1873) studied Lithuanian folklore, although Geitler was more interested not so much in folklore itself as in the features of the Lithuanian language—its phonology, morphology, and relations with the Slavic languages (1873–1885). The year of Geitler’s early death (1885) saw the arrival on the scene of the wide-ranging Indo-Europeanist Josef Zubatý, who, as this overview shows, was the most productive Czech Baltic scholar. He wrote 18 articles and 43 reviews on Baltic studies. In 1902, František Vymazal published the first Czech-language textbook of Lithuanian. In 1910–1914, František Sedláček published several important works on Baltic and Slavic accentology. At the end of the First World War, Václav Važný enriched the Czech Baltic studies library with his translations of Lithuanian folk songs and tales (1917). After the establishment of independent Czechoslovakia and the independent Baltic states, Czech researchers’ interest in the Baltic languages waned but did not disappear entirely. In 1928, Hanuš Entner, one of the most active advocates of Latvian-Czech ties, published a Czech-Latvian phrasebook with a grammar. Jaroslav Haasza returned to Lithuanian folk songs in his translations (1937). But already in the 1920s, Václav Machek published his first scholarly contribution—an article on parallels between the Baltic and Slavic languages. His bibliography, which runs through 1980, that is, 15 years after Machek’s death, contains 12 articles and 4 reviews on Baltic topics. With Machek’s arrival on the scene, one can speak of the emergence of a second Baltic studies center in Brno. Machek’s successor in Brno was the Indo-Europeanist Adolf Erhart. He published the first (!) Czech-language grammar of Lithuanian (1956), and his textbook Baltské jazyky (1984) is not only an excellent introduction to Baltic studies but also a substantial comparative grammar of the Baltic languages. Erhart made great efforts to ensure that the teaching of Lithuanian continued at Masaryk University. Professor

Bibliography of Czech Baltic Studies

Erhart worked intensively at Masaryk University for four decades and chose as his successor the Prague structuralist Tomáš Hoskovec (from 1996). Baltic etymology is also studied by one of the authors of this article, who, likewise, came to Brno thanks to Erhart. Bohumil Vykypěl also represents Baltic studies in Brno, conducting research in Slavic studies and typology as well. The youngest generation of Baltic scholars in Brno comprises Jindřich Čeladin, Marta Betáková, and Tereza Kabeláčová. They have already taken part in various Baltic studies conferences and published their first articles. Among Prague linguists, Pavel Trost was most interested in Baltic studies, publishing 15 articles on Baltic topics from 1958 onward. Slavic scholars Václav Polák, Karel Janaček, Jiří Marvan, Luboš Řeháček, Olga Parolková, Jan Petr, Karel Horálek, and Igor Němec have touched on one or another Baltic aspect in their work. Radegast Parolek deserves special attention: he has systematically worked to make Lithuanian and Latvian texts accessible to Czech readers.

The aim of the bibliographic survey presented here is to collect works by Czech authors, as well as works published in the Czech Republic, that investigate the Baltic languages, linguistics, and folklore. It also includes Slavic and Indo-European studies that examine Baltic-language material in greater detail. The list includes works currently in press, as well as works for which, unfortunately, we were unable to find all the bibliographic details, but which nevertheless need to be mentioned here. It also includes bachelor’s and master’s theses, which make up a substantial part of scholarly output in Baltic studies.
