J. BALČIKONIS: CHRONICLE OF THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS BIRTH

1. Scientific Conference

On March 22–23, a jubilee scientific conference marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of academician Juozas Balčikonis, organized by the Institute of the Lithuanian Language and Literature and the University, was held at Vilnius State V. Kapsukas University. Five sections worked there: 1) lexicology and semantics, 2) morphology and word formation, 3) syntax, 4) stylistics and translations, and 5) standard language and dialectology. Papers at the conference were delivered by staff of the Institute of the Lithuanian Language and Literature, lecturers from Vilnius State V. Kapsukas University, Vilnius State Pedagogical Institute, Šiauliai K. Preikšas Pedagogical Institute, the Klaipėda Faculty of the Lithuanian SSR State Conservatory, and the Lithuanian SSR Veterinary Academy, as well as teachers from the city of Kapsukas and Kaunas district. A group of Latvian linguists from the A. Upītis Institute of Language and Literature of the Latvian SSR also participated and delivered papers.

Thirty-six papers were presented at the plenary session and the five section meetings. Several were specifically devoted to J. Balčikonis: Prof. J. Pikčilingis discussed his conception of style; Associate Professor A. Šoblinskas, his methodological ideas; V. Vitkauskas, Candidate of Philological Sciences, spoke about the professor’s views on inherited dialect vocabulary; B. Stundžia, Candidate of Philological Sciences, discussed J. Balčikonis as an accentologist; and the linguistic and stylistic features of J. Balčikonis’s translations were examined by V. Baranauskaitė, R. Dilienė, R. Marcinkevičienė, and I. Steponavičiūtė. The plenary session was chaired, and the conference proceedings were summarized, by the director of the Institute of the Lithuanian Language and Literature, Academician J. Lankutis. The “Invitation and Programme for the Jubilee Scientific Conference Marking the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Academician Juozas Balčikonis” was published (V., 1985). Articles based on the conference papers are printed in this collection.

The conference participants were entertained by organist B. Vasiliauskas and actors from the University courtyard theatre.

2. Jubilee Commemorations

On March 25, a commemorative ceremony was held in the theatre hall of Vilnius State V. Kapsukas University. It was opened with introductory remarks by the University rector, Academician J. Kubilius. A paper on J. Balčikonis’s life and his scholarly and pedagogical work was delivered by K. Ulvydas, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Lithuanian SSR. Former students and colleagues of the professor—Candidates of Philological Sciences A. Lyberis and V. Vitkauskas, and Professors A. Paulauskienė and V. Žukas—shared their recollections. The folk music theatre troupe of the Museum of Folk Life, led by P. Mataitis, performed for those attending the ceremony.

On March 16, commemorative ceremonies were held in the city and district of Panevėžys.

Linguists Prof. Z. Zinkevičius, Doctor of Philological Sciences A. Sabaliauskas, Associate Professors V. Būda and A. Pupkis, and Candidates of Philological Sciences A. Kučinskaitė and K. Morkūnas attended the commemoration held at Panevėžys J. Balčikonis Secondary School. The school’s director, V. Baliūnas, opened the ceremony. Papers on J. Balčikonis’s scholarly work and his contributions to the Lithuanian language were delivered by Doctor of Philological Sciences A. Sabaliauskas and Associate Professor A. Pupkis. A. Kučinskaitė, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Prof. Z. Zinkevičius, and the head of the city’s Department of Public Education

S. Jurgaitis, academician J. Balčikonis’s nephew P. Balčikonis, and teacher A. Šilgalyte. Teacher D. Budrienė spoke about the traditions fostered at the school and initiated by J. Balčikonis.

After the solemn commemoration, a granite bust of J. Balčikonis, created by sculptor J. Genevičius, was unveiled in the school foyer. The ethnographic ensemble “Ratilió” of Vilnius State V. Kapsukas University performed for the commemoration participants.

At Panevėžys Second Secondary School, linguists who had come from Vilnius taught Lithuanian lessons and paid tribute to the memory of academician J. Balčikonis.

In Ėriškiai, Panevėžys District, all the participants in the commemoration gathered at J. Balčikonis’s grave and laid flowers. Philology doctoral degree holder A. Sabaliauskas gave an address. A solemn commemoration was then held at the collective farm’s cultural center. Associate Professor A. Pupkis delivered the report. His students and continuators of his work shared their memories of the professor: Philology doctoral degree holder A. Sabaliauskas, Associate Professor V. Būda, Philology candidate A. Kučinskaitė, academician J. Balčikonis’s nephew P. Balčikonis, and teachers A. Markavičienė and A. Urbonas. Collective farm chairman A. Giedraitis and G. Kadžytė, an employee of the Central Council of the Lithuanian SSR Society for the Protection of Monuments and Local History, also spoke.

A literary and musical montage by local amateur performers was prepared for the festive commemoration. The folklore ensemble of the Lithuanian SSR Academy of Sciences performed for the participants.

On March 6, at a commemoration held at the “Mažvydas” club of the Vilnius Book Lovers’ Society, Associate Professor A. Pupkis delivered the report. A. Rabačiauskaitė, J. Katinas, and others shared their memories.

At the commemoration held on March 19 at the Vilnius State Pedagogical Institute, reports were delivered by K. Ulvydas, corresponding member of the Lithuanian SSR Academy of Sciences, and Philology candidate A. Lyberis.

At the Lithuanian SSR Academy of Sciences’ Scientists’ Palace, during a solemn commemoration, reports on J. Balčikonis’s life and scholarly work were delivered by Philology doctoral degree holder A. Vanagas and Philology candidate A. Lyberis. Philology candidate K. Morkūnas, Associate Professor J. Žukauskaitė, translator E. Vengrienė, and philosopher I. Ledas shared their memories.

At the Kaunas Evening Faculty of Vilnius State V. Kapsukas University, Associate Professor A. Pupkis delivered a report on J. Balčikonis’s life and scholarly work, and his contribution to the standardization and improvement of the Lithuanian language. Writer J. Būtėnas spoke about the personality of the famous linguist. The faculty folklore ensemble performed for those gathered, presenting several songs written down by J. Balčikonis and new variants of them.

At the jubilee commemoration held on March 26 at the Šiauliai Engineers’ House, Associate Professor A. Pupkis delivered a report on J. Balčikonis’s life and scholarly work. Professor A. Paulauskienė shared memories.

A Lithuanian language week was held at Klaušučiai Secondary School in Jurbarkas District to mark the 100th anniversary of academician J. Balčikonis’s birth.

3. Exhibitions

On March 25, a jubilee exhibition devoted to J. Balčikonis was opened at the Science Museum of Vilnius State V. Kapsukas University. It was opened by Acad. V. Mažiulis. Flowers were laid beside Acad. J. Balčikonis’s memorial plaque in the University’s Grand Courtyard.

An exhibition introducing visitors to J. Balčikonis’s life and work was mounted at the Central Library of the Lithuanian SSR Academy of Sciences.

During the jubilee celebrations, exhibitions devoted to J. Balčikonis opened at the J. Paleckis Public Library in Kaunas, the Lithuanian SSR State Republican Library, and the Lithuanian SSR Museum of Literature; the exhibition at the J. Balčikonis Secondary School Museum in Panevėžys was renewed, among others.
