Kėdainiai was a mul i- eligious and mul i-e hnic ci y in he 17 h and 18 h cen u ies
(Ži gulis 2005: 179; 2005b: 35). In o de o p omo e ade, c a s, and ac i ely

ollowe s o his eligion as possible in Kėdainiai (Two ek 1966: 193; Ži gulis 2005a:
226). A ha ime, he ci y o Kėdainiai was p edominan ly inhabi ed by
Li huanians, Polish, Sco s, Ge mans, Jews (see also Šinkūnas 1928: 21, 36; KDN 18;
Ži gulis 2005: 179). Ca holics, E angelical Re o med, E angelical Lu he ans, Jews,
and a ew O hodox we e es ablished in he ci y (Šinkūnas: 2122; KDN 18; Ži gulis
2005: 239; 2005a: 234247; 2006: 225235). I is belie ed ha in 1624 he Jews began
economic ac i i y in Kėdainiai, and in 1629 he Ge man E angelical Lu he ans we e
in i ed (Ži gulis 2005a, 227). I is claimed ha K is upas Rad ila main ained ies
wi h he Elbing Re o med Chu ch, o which he Sco s also belonged. Al hough i is
no known whe he hey we e o icially in i ed, he Sco ish Re o med
appea ed in he Khedi e a ound 1628-1629. F om 1590 o 1795 (du ing he en i e
pe iod o he ci y's municipali y) he names o he magis a es' o ice s we e
collec ed om a ious ci y documen s (as well as om he books o Kėdainiai
ac s o he 17 h-18 h cen u ies) (Tyla 2000: 225-7375). I was ound ha ou o he

Li huanians and Poles (Ži gulis 2002: 25).

The small O hodox communi y in Kėdainiai ac ually began o de elop in he middle
o he 17 h cen u y, when Jonas Rad ila ma ied he Molda ian p incess Ma ia
Lupula. In 1652 in he honou was buil S . And ieus chu ch and a monas e y we e
es ablished nea Knypa a Squa e (Paške ičius 1908: 1718; Laukai y ė 2001: 33;
