The architect Roberto Rivero and daylighting research

Abstract

By the end of the 1950’s decade, architect Roberto Oscar Rivero, who had been studying in England, returned to his native Uruguay and produced a revolutionary approach to daylighting techniques: he was able to relate lighting intensities with positions of points located underneath rectangular windows , plotting the result in a simple table. He could do so with the help of painstaking graphs that he drew manually. To introduce the value of the transmittance in his methods he had to define an expression widely quoted by scientists around the world, the Rivero Transmittance Formula, which shows the relevance of directionality in a factor usually taken as scalar in most calculations. This procedure also permitted the study of skies like the CIE overcast sky, which were strongly dependent on the angle of altitude and hence the performance of uniform and overcast skies could be compared. With so many fortunate advances he was on the verge of finding a more general solution to radiative exchange problems, which intriguingly enough, he was not able to produce eventually. Roberto Rivero has passed away recently, and his original texts have almost disappeared as there was no re-edition of this material. Since the manuscripts were conveyed in Spanish, we have felt the necessity to explain his discoveries for an English-speaking audience. In order to do this, we will use a contemporary point of view, and we will discuss how far he could have reached and what he achieved in the daylighting field.

1. BACKGROUND OF THE RESEARCH

science o ligh ing was slowly bu su ely es ablished.
The indings o J. H. Lambe and especially hose
con ained in his ea ise on Pho ome y o 1758, we e
edisco e ed, dis o ed and inally applied. This
p ocess was mainly encou aged by he p omo e s o
he new p oduc s ha became a ailable in he ield o
a i icial de ices and luminai es.
Then, among he many in e es ing e o s ha ook
place, we could quo e hose o Pleijel, D. Spence , P.
H. Moon, Hopkinson and H. H. Higbie.
Howe e , hey did no seem o know each o he ’s
wo k, especially in wha ega ds o he excellen
pape s by Higbie and Randall.
Ri e o was amilia wi h wha we could desc ibe
as he No dic school o dayligh ing, which included
English, Scandina ian and occasionally F ench

show.
Thus, Ri e o was conce ned wi h he p oblems
posed by he uni o m sky, which had been a main
issue in Pleijel’s wo k, and also wi h he new and
mo e complex app oach p esen ed by cloudy skies as
seen in he heo ies o Spence -Moon, la e adop ed
by he CIE (In e na ional Commission o Ligh ing).
We would say now ha he CIE o e cas sky, wi h

case o non-di use emi e s.

As expec ed, his solu ion coincided wi h he so-

3. CONCLUSIONS
Rega ding o he aspec s o bo h Higbie’s and
Ri e o’s wo k, we could add ha hey g asped he
concep o ec o analysis in ligh ing, bu no in a
s aigh way. Higbie, o ins ance, s udied he
con igu a ion ac o o inclined su aces, whose
nume ical alue could ha e been ob ained in ano he
way, making use o he al eady in eg a ed alues o
e ical and ho izon al ac o s. In he case o Ri e o,
o make commen s on a g aphical example, he
desc ibes he e ec o a o a ed ec angula window
on a e ical plane.

We could conclude by saying ha hei main lack
