depend on his mel wa e o i iga ion and sus aining li es ock. In addi ion, because

ecei e, keeping Ea h empe a u e unde con ol.
As we ha e analyzed he ole o glacie s on Ea h, i is ime o look h ough he
h ea s posed on hem. We used o hink ha ice was e e nal and could be passed on o

a e apidly mel ing, cal ing o in o he sea and e ea ing on land. When oxic chemical
pollu an s and pa icles se le on he su ace o a glacie , hey educe he s eng h o
albedo. Albedo is a special abili y o he su ace o e lec sunligh . As we ha e al eady
esea ched ha clean snow and ice a e p o ec ed wi h high albedo as a shield agains
sun ays. Howe e , pollu an s when se le on he su ace o he ice, da ken i s colo
leading o abso bing mo e sunligh . Consequen ly, glacie s hea up and sh ink mo e
quickly. I glacie s con inue mel ing a his end, he e will be de as a ing
implica ions. One o he mos immedia e consequences is ising sea le els. As glacie s
mel , he wa e lows in o he oceans con ibu ing o signi ican sea le el ise. People
