challenges in he Alps canno always be compa ed wi h o he egions, mainly due o he spe-
ci ic na u al condi ions. A he same ime, di e en na ional amewo ks apply o he a ea,
and he Alpine coun ies ha e commi ed hemsel es o he Alpine Con en ion, a holis ic
policy o he conse a ion and p o ec ion o he Alps, which is binding unde in e na ional
law.
Spa ial planning and de elopmen play a c ucial ole in he implemen a ion o global, Eu ope-
an and na ional goals o secu ing and es o ing biodi e si y. The concep o g een in as uc-
u e, de ined as a s a egically planned ne wo k o na u al and nea -na u al a eas, is o cen al
impo ance in his con ex and complemen s he specialis deba es on secu ing open spaces
h ough planning and on Alpine spa ial policy.
In e na ional, Eu opean and na ional guidelines call o g ea e conside a ion o ecological
