such as medicine, cosme ics, ag icul u e, aquacul u e,
and ood as die a y supplemen s [1]. Chi in is a copoly-
me wi h N-ace yl-D-glucosamine uni s linked wi h b-
(1-4)-glycosidic bonds which p o ide igidi y o he cell
wall in chi inous ungi. The e is e idence ha he chi in
syn hesis is ca alyzed by he chi in syn hase (CS; EC
2.4.1.16), an enzyme ha ans e s b-1,4-linked anhyd o-
2-ace amido-2-deoxy-D-glucose(GlcNAc) omu idine
diphospha e N-ace ylglucosamine (UDP-GlcNAc) o he
non educing end o g owing chi in chains [2]. Howe e ,
chi in is syn hesized by he egula ion o dis inc isoen-
zymes whose numbe anges in some hyphomyce es [3].
Ne e heless, he e is ela i ely li le in o ma ion on he
genes esponsible o chi in biosyn hesis in ilamen ous
ungi, analyses o DNA agmen s om axonomically
di e se ungal species ha e shown ha mos ungi ha e
h ee o six chi in syn hase genes [4]. The e o e, his
di e si y o chi in syn hases makes di icul o ind a
unique model o egula ion o he chi in pa hway. The
chemical sc eening o he biomass o a new ma ine-
de i ed s ain o Penicillium oque o i,p oducedby
liquid-s a e e men a ion, led o he iden i ica ion o se -
e al ola ile and non- ola ile compounds [5]. As a esul
o his p e ious s udy, we ha e isola ed and cha ac e -
ized a new molecule. The chemical s uc u e o he 2-
deoxy-2-phosphamino-a-D-glucopy anose isola ed was
elucida ed on he basis o 1D and 2D NMR s udies as
well as o he ins umen al echniques. In consequence
o his disco e y, i has been p oposed a biogene ic
ou e aiming o explain i s o ma ion as an in e media y
componen o he chi in biosyn hesis.
