Reconsidering Mach in the light of the interplay of practices

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to reconsider Mach’s position in the light of the recent approach on the interplay of mathematical practices provided by José Ferreirós’ book Mathematical Knowledge and the Interplay of Practices. In the first section the main approach of the book is presented, with a characterization of the notion of ‘scientific practice’ and the triple approach used to understand mathematical knowledge: cognitive, pragmatist and historical. In the sections 2, 3 and 4 Mach’s philosophical views are presented according to this epistemological approach. The fifth section is the conclusion.

published by José Fe ei ós Ma hema ical Knowledge and he In e play o P ac ices.
Al hough he co e o Mach’s philosophical posi ion is no conce ned wi h he
his o y and philosophy o ma hema ics, I will show ha Fe ei ós’ app oach can
enligh en se e al aspec s o Mach’s iews. In o de o a ain his goal, he i s sec ion
o he pape is de o ed o p esen and summa ize he gene al lines o Fe ei ós’ wo k. In
he second and in he hi d, a connec ion wi h Mach’s philosophical pe spec i e will be
p o ided and he o h is in ended o o e a conclusion based on he main lines o he
pape .
