P ojec o Tea al
I is almos impossible o alk o hea e g oups which
managed o es ablish a place o hemsel es wi h-
ou P ojec o Tea al coming o mind. The collec i e,
es ablished in 1994, by João Rod igues, Ma ia Dua e,
Helena Ta a es, And é Ma anha and Gonçalo Fe ei a
de Almeida, has p oduced an inc easingly sub e si e
and con o e sial body o wo k, and ends o dis ance
i sel om no only mo e media-o ien ed o com-
me cial ci cui s — wi h he excep ion o he big 2016
e ospec i e p omo ed by Cul u ges and he Ma ia
Ma os Municipal Thea e — bu also om a mo e con-
en ional de ini ion o hea e. I wasn’ , howe e ,
always so. P ojec o Tea al’s i s pe o mance was
a p oduc ion o Jean Paul Sa e’s As T oianas [The
T ojan Women] (di . Ma ia Dua e and Elsa Valen im,
1994), in which he e ea u ed a numbe o elemen s
adi ionally associa ed wi h hea e. O e ime hese
would disappea om he g oup’s pe o mances. Nex
came Ciclo Inconsula [Inconsula Cycle] (1996),
which was based on h ee non-d ama ic ex s (Le Roi
des aulnes, by Michel Tou nie , Giacomo Joyce, by
James Joyce, and The Was eland, by T. S. Elio ) and
was di ec ed by Elsa Valen im, Rogé io de Ca alho
and João G osso, wi h Ma ia Dua e appea ing as he
only pe o me . I was a pe o mance cons uc ed on
a “p o oundly expe imen al, isual and pe o ma i e
[base] [...] [ amed] by a igo ously hough ou scenic
design” (Vasques, 1996). In 1997, a p oduc ion o As
C iadas [The Maids] by Jean Gene (di . João G osso)
ma ked he end o P ojec o Tea al’s ini ial phase,
which, hough cha ac e ised by a ce ain expe imen-
alism, had s ill been clea ly loca able wi hin he ield
o hea e.
In dissidências [dissen s] (1997), he e we e ewe
c ea i e elemen s in ol ed han one migh expec o a
ypical hea e p oduc ion (in he p og amme, only
he a is ic di ec o was men ioned), and he space
chosen o he pe o mance was also al e na i e: he

si e a chi e is one o he company’s c ea i e bases,

a p e-selec ion made by Luís Cas o, which is hen
made a ailable o he ac o s so ha hey can con ib-
u e on a gi en subjec o ex , as was he case in he
c ea i e p ocess which esul ed in Ilhas [Islands]
(based on Ilhas Desconhecidas [Unknown Islands], by
Raul B andão, 2012). Each o he objec s ca ies wi h

[The Con en ] (2011), which akes o i s base he
cha ac e is ics (en i onmen al, cul u al, sociologi-

his play, ano he o Ka na ’s ecu ing subjec s and

Po ucalidades [Po ucali ies] (2001): he use o ield-

The company was ounded by Ca los Cos a, Nuno Ca -
doso, Ana Vi o ino, Ca a ina Ma ins, Lucinda Gomes,
Ped o Ca ei a and Alb ech Loops, a ound a mani-
es o w i en collec i ely — a ac which is indica i e
o he g oup’s spi i , and also he in luence ha he
his o ical angua d had on i s o ma ion. The di ec-
i es o Visões Ú eis’ c ea ion a e laid ou in ha

These landscape pe o mances — a usion o
hea e, music and u banism — a e closely ied o a
ci y which has, h oughou he yea s, been inhabi ed
by a se ies o gene a ions, as in Coma P o undo [Deep
Coma] (d ama u gy and di ec ion by Ana Vi o ino,
Ca los Cos a and Ped o Ca ei a, 2002)6. This audio-
walk ca ies wi hin i he idea o he ansience o
li e and ci ilisa ions, and he associa ion o his wi h
he ans o ma ion o he u ban space and he impac
his has on hose who inhabi i . I is p esen ed as a

he associa ed social and cul u al issues, such as he
gen i ica ion o be wi nessed in he Foz Velha a ea
(and which now, in 2017, a ec s o he zones o he

ope a, which wa ns o he e ec s o wa e pollu ion,
is hea d and seen ollowing a ou e plo ed along he
banks o he Dou o i e , whe e a numbe o pe o -
mance poin s a e o be ound. Using a bike adap ed
o he pu pose — i ed wi h speake s and a loca ion
inde — he cyclis -spec a o lis ens o he sound ack
especially designed o he ou e. The expe ience was
inspi ed by con empo a y ishing p ac ice on he
Dou o i e , he i e i sel , and by he phenomenon
o sex-change in ish as a esul o wa e pollu ion — a
ac o which explains he audience’s encoun e wi h
male me maids and emale ishe (wo)men. The si e-
speci ici y and communi y/social in e en ion o hese
pieces a e likewise p esen in he c ea ions designed
o a ou e a ound no he n Po ugal’s p isons,
which o med pa o he P ojec o Libe dades [P ojec
Libe ies]8 (1997-1999).

Nex came a second phase (1999-2008), mo e
ocused on he sea ch o new discou ses and on
“lab wo k”, in which he inpu o he a is ic di ec-
o s p e ailed, and which conce ned i sel mo e wi h
collec i e and o iginal d ama ic c ea ion based on
imp o isa ion. Nowadays, his is conside ed one o
he essen ial cha ac e is ics o he g oup’s wo k. Upon
mo ing o a new space (Fáb ica Social) in 2009, a new
e a began, in which he g oup has enjoyed imp o ed
p oduc ion condi ions and has ensu ed g ea e com-
muni y in ol emen , p omo ing ac i i ies in pa allel
o hei a is ic c ea ions, and also welcoming new
c ea i e s uc u es ( ia he p ojec A is as Associados
[Associa ed A is s]). Visões Ú eis con inues o call
o new languages based on he c oss-o e be ween
a ious di e en a is ic disciplines, and o new ways
o o ganising c ea i e p ocesses.

Ci colando began in 1999, in Opo o, on he ini ia i e
o he duo And é B aga and Cláudia Figuei edo. Thei
aining (in physical educa ion and con empo a y ci -
cus echniques, and sociology, espec i ely) g ea ly
shaped he de elopmen o his cul u al coope a i e,
which eme ged in close associa ed wi h he language
o con empo a y ci cus and also om a desi e o
