Vendo Managed In en o y (VMI) is a ool selec ed by Schneide Elec ic o op imize i s Supply Chain.
The basic p inciple o VMI i ha he manu ac u e is esponsible o managing he s ock o i s
cus ome s, ha a e mainly dis ibu o s.
VMI is complex since i links wo di e en o ganiza ions wi h wo di e en IT sys ems. Ha ing he keys o
he cus ome s’ s ock is a g ea esponsibili y, pa icula ly oday when he p essu e on he cos s is
pe manen . As a consequence, he manu ac u e needs o each high le els o pe o mance i he wan s
o imp o e i s ela ion wi h he cus ome . Any ailu e can mean a loss o business.
F om 2005 o 2007 Schneide Elec ic did a pilo expe ience wi h one o i s big Du ch cus ome . Looking
a he logis ic KPIs his expe ience was a eal success. Bo h companies we e e y happy abou he
esul s. Bu he esou ces in es ed by Schneide Elec ic in his p ojec we e qui e impo an . This closed
he doo o any implemen a ion o VMI on a la ge scale.
The a ge o my p ojec was o imp o e he e iciency o ou in e nal VMI p ocesses in o de o educe
he in es men o ime needed o implemen and main ain new cus ome s.
An analysis o he ime spen on a ious asks showed ha he e we e a lo o manual s eps and
ope a ions. Fu he mo e he solu ion implemen ed o he i s cus ome was complex and wi h limi ed
capaci ies. By de eloping a new ool Schneide Elec ic could indus ialize VMI.
Once i has been iden i ied ha a new ool was needed, I had o de ine an a chi ec u e ha allows:
 To handle a lo o da a
 To implemen easily new cus ome s
 To educe signi ican ly he ime needed o un up VMI
The solu ion is based on a se o Access da abases communica ing wi h each o he s. Th ee main
da abases a e he co e o his p ojec . Cus ome ’s da a is s o ed in a speci ic da abase (one da abase pe
cus ome ), ano he da abase is used o he in e ace and a hi d one is making he calcula ions and
communica ions be ween he o he s.
As a esul all he ope a ions a e simpli ied o he use . He can ca y ou mos o his asks only wi h one
click when i could ake him one comple e day in he pas .
Once his solu ion was de eloped, he i s VMI cus ome mig a ed o i wi hou any issue (Fully
anspa en o he cus ome ). I has hen been implemen ed success ully wi h a new cus ome in a
eco d ime!

Vendo Managed In en o y (VMI) is a way o op imize he supply chain whe e he supplie is esponsible
o managing he s ock o his cus ome . This is o example one o he success ul business models used
by Wal-Ma , he wo ld's la ges public co po a ion by e enue1.
Since 2005 Schneide Elec ic is in es iga ing he possibili ies o implemen ing VMI wi h some o i s big
cus ome s. This ool would be a way o Schneide Elec ic o inc ease i s supply chain pe o mance, bu
also o s eng hen i s ela ions wi h i s cus ome s.
F om summe 2005 o summe 2007 Schneide Elec ic did a success ul pilo p ojec wi h one o hei
Du ch cus ome . Va ious KPIs showed some posi i e e ec s on he supply chain pe o mance. Se ice
le el o he end cus ome inc eased by 6 poin s while educing in en o y le els a dis ibu o side. The
ela ion wi h he a ge ed cus ome also s ongly imp o ed.
Bu he esou ces in es ed by Schneide Elec ic on his pilo p ojec we e high. Wi h his se up
Schneide Elec ic could no imagine implemen ing VMI on a la ge scale, e en wi h he posi i e esul s
ha i showed.
When I was hi ed summe 2007, my mission was o imp o e he ools and p ocesses in o de o make
VMI mo e e icien . So in a i s s ep I had o analyze he cu en se up in o de o see whe e he
po en ial poin s o imp o emen we e. Ou o his analysis I saw ha indeed a lo o s eps in he
ope a ing p ocesses we e manual and could be pa ly au oma ed. Fu he mo e, as my p edecesso wen
in o some hing o ally new o he company, he solu ion ha was buil was e y complex and wi h
limi ed capaci ies. Wi h hindsigh i was possible o simpli y i and make i mo e powe ul.
