Academic esea ch on en ep eneu ship has inc eased o e he las ew decades,
accompanying socie y’s in e es on he subjec (Lands öm, 2005). In ac , en ep eneu ship
esea ch and eaching has been one o he mos p ominen social sciences in ecen yea s, wi h
jobs wi h a ocus on en ep eneu ship and acul y expe ise in en ep eneu ship con inuing o
inc ease (Finkle, 2007).
The explosion o en ep eneu ship schola ship a oused he need o measu e scien i ic
p oduc ion (namely h ough bibliome ic and scien ome ic app oaches) in en ep eneu ship
and unde s and he scien i ic s uc u e o he ield, so ha se e al s udies ha e been de o ed o
ha issue (Co nelius e al., 2006, G égoi e e ., 2006, Schild e al., 2006). Unde lying he
scien i ic s uc u e o a ield is he ne wo k o in o mal communica ional linkages es ablished

he esea ch amewo k p oposed by Zuccala (2006). Acco ding o he me hodology, in isible

The e m “in isible colleges” was in oduced in 1645 by Robe Boyle (Wallace, 2007), when

common scien i ic in e es s (Lie ouw, 1989; Zuccala, 2006). P ice (1961; 1963) eco e he

in isible college was de ined as a hie a chical and eli is g oup o schola s, suppo ed by an
expec able inequali y and a highly connec ion (P ice, 1971).

in isible college phenomenon (Wallace, 2007). Focussing on communica ion among

na u e. To Lie ouw (1989: 622), i is a pa adox ha “ he e m in isible college desc ibes an
in o mal communica ion p ocess, ye esea che s look o i in o mal social s uc u es and
documen s” and explains an in isible college as “a se o in o mal communica ion ela ions
among scien is s o o he schola s who sha e a speci ic common in e es o goal”.

communica ion was ouch o by au ho s such as Small (1978) and Ga ield (1979) and hey

Thus, he esea ch o in isible colleges is one o he main applica ions o bibliome ics (c .,
Table 4).
In he ield o economics, namely Indus ial Rela ions and Labou , Casey and McMillan
(2008) and McMillan and Casey (2007) assessed he in ellec ual bases o he a ea o e a
easonable span o yea s (1974-2006) based on he analysis o one single jou nal, espec i ely,
Indus ial & Labo Rela ions Re iew and B i ish Jou nal o Indus ial Rela ions.
