TERMINOLOGY IR PUBLICATIONS Nijolė GLOSSARY OF AUTOMOTIVE TERMS Among the recent dictionaries of terms in various fields, one cannot go unnoticed UAB “Four Wheels” prepared ir 3000 copies printed “The Zodyno of Five-Language Automotive Terms”. ! Even before beginning to į delve into the content of į this dictionary, the eye jo falls on the inaccurate title. Motorsport is one of many branches of iš technical science, so there is no doubt that the publication should be called a dictionary of automotive, motorsport terms. ne Oo After all, we have ne dictionaries of economic, ar pedagogical o construction, economics, pedagogy, construction terms. Although the necessity of the publication is not in doubt, this simple example shows that the consultation of terminologists is useful for the editors of ir the dictionaries. When discussing the structure of the glossary, it should be said that according to the order of presentation of terms it is systematic. As it is written in the preamble, “ words ir technical terms are grouped according to the structure of the vehicles, dividing them į into mechanical aggregates, systems, ir units parts" (p.3). The vocabula8 ry has chapters ir 203 columns. Although the compound terms in the columns are not divided į into nests, they (also single words) ir should be listed in the alphabetical order of the letters of the first word. Although the number of terms is not stated in the preface or on the cover page, it should include about motorsport terms. 4000 In the preamble it is said that “ the vocabulary includes terms used to describe the construction of the jo entire car, aggregates, ir parts of units, at the end of which o normals are described. Be therefore, the glossary contains key terms related to the operation of vehicles, the management of common technical su characteristics" ir (p. * Five-language dictionary of automotive terms. V.: “Four wheels”, the 1995. 452 p. 97 3). The publication contains alphabetical indexes for all languages. In the Lithuanian index, the terms are presented in slots. Po next section of the preface, explains how to find the desired term. Before talking about the content of the publication, it should be said that one of the most obvious shortcomings of this dictionary is that the terms are not pronounced. The publication is not the first dictionary of terms in this technical field. Several years earlier, the industrial association “ Autoservisas" has been vo released “Russian — Lithuanian language car service terms Zodyna?”, apimantj about terms. Recently 3000 reviewed peer-reviewed ir terminologist J. Klimavicius. Unfortunately, when reading the reviewed dictionary it seems that the editors violated the practice of jo terminology: they did not use the already standardized terms of this field did not indicate other ir The gardens he used. As for the terms in the dictionary, more than a third of them are international. iš jų Alongside many of them, jų Lithuanian synonyms should be given, ir e.g.: defektas d., trūkumas), dampferis d.,slopintuvas), (= flangas jungė), kronšteinas k., gembė), pedalas p., (= pamina), penetracija p., (= £, įsiskverbimas), satelitas s., (= palydovas), junnyras š., lankstas), štuceris š., (= atvamzdis), traversa t., skersinė sija), (= Žikleris (= (= (= (= (= 2., nozzle) etc. ir There are foreign words in the dictionary, which are corrected by language practice publications. For example, as a term to be used is given foreign friction bė friction (= coupling, clutch), as well as corrective value exhaust air outlet) plug. (= The noun forms are lacking in many places, e.g.: reverse) polarity, high) voltage cable, at ethylene (= = ethylene) gasoline, spent spent) gas, (= (= (= s pe c ialized (= specialized) car, smooth to constant) speed (= etc. ir There are cases where the dictionary presents regular forms of terms ? Russian-Lithuanian dictionary of car service terms. V.: Autoservisas, 1989. 113 p. 98 mos, in the o arrow the tų terms themselves — are irregular, e.g.: in the dictionary — ceramic fuse cylinder, natural wear, connected car train, in the arrow ceramic fuse cylinder, natural wear, o connected car — train, etc. ir The dictionary is full of incorrect inaccurate ir terms, e.g.: automo bilis electric automotive - electric power - plant), car on (= order order car), opening to the right panel dashboard opening), (= multi-sectional multi-sectional) fuel pump, - warning warning) alarm, variable (= flow reverse reverse) pump, light car off-road off-road), (= molding decorative strip), odometer road counter), (= full full load, reverse reverse) distributor, special purpose special) oil, re brakes with a strap type (= strap) regulator, etc. — (= (= (= (= (= (= su (= ir The meanings of some terms are confused. For example, the international term exhauster is presented with the Lithuanian synonym vacuum pump, which has a completely different meaning. The term exhauster Lithuanian equivalent suction fan min. — (1. "Dictionary of Automotive Terms"). The dictionary is full of compound — terms of two-word, three-word, four-word, even five-word ar six-word, whose English, German, ar French equivalents are much shorter, for example: filter element upper support plate engl. — thrust plate (i upper), vok. Filter insert — Pressure plate, upper, pranc. stopped de washer (superTeure); sealed hermetic liquid cooling system — angl. sealed cooling system, vok. Overpressure - Keel-tiled - cast iron circumference: Overpressure - Wedge circuit, pranc. sealed cooling de system; electromagnetic cold-start sprayer — start valve, vok. Electric start valve; Start valve; Cold start valve, pranc. injecteur de dæparta froid; injecteur démarrage de froid: speed a at which maximum torque is achieved — maximum torque speed, vok. Maximum moment — Speed of rotation, pranc. maximum de rotational au speed torque; AC generator power angl. — alternator output, 99 vok. Alternator power, — pranc. power derailleur kt. ir This difference in term length also raises doubts about the suitability of the corresponding Lithuanian terms. The titles of the columns ir and the combinations of words used as terms in the indexes look rather strange and incomprehensible, e.g.: e/electric equipment —data, manoeuvrability —parameters, engine —construction, engine —parameters, engine —regulation, engine —technical data, chassis —data, etc. These column titles should be as follows: E/Electric Equipment Data, Agility Parameters, Engine Design, Engine Parameters, Engine Adjustment, Engine Technical Data, Chassis Data, etc., and these titles should not appear at all in the indexes, as they are not terms. By the way, the dictionary also contains section names that go with terms, such as: instrument panel, water heater, engine cylinder, interior lighting, etc., but they are not used in the text for some reason. It should also be said that three-word terms are not used equally, e.g.: isometric turning diameter, snow plough, rotary snow plough, tracked vehicle, but graZulo working (= working wheel) length, wheel dimensional (= dimensional wheel) length, body front (= front body) part, body rear (= rear body) part, etc. ir Not all the shortcomings of this ne attractively published Dictionary have been mentioned. Although it has accumulated a lot of automotive terminology, it still needs considerable ją improvement in terms of standardization. 100
