INTERNATIONAL TERMINOLOGY CONFERENCE COOPERATION IN THE FIELD OF TERMINOLOGY IN CENTRAL EUROPE The international terminology conference Cooperation in the Field of Terminology in Central Europe was held in Szombathely, Hungary, on 7-8 October 2005. It was organized by the Departments of Applied Linguistics and Uralistics (Finno-Ugric) of Berzsenyi Daniel College. The conference was attended by linguists from Estonia, Croatia, Lithuania, Slovakia and Hungary. The presentations will be in English, German and Hungarian. The first day of the conference was devoted to language policy and terminology. Gizella Szabėmihaly (Slovakia) presented the problems of language policy, language planning and terminology in Slovakia. The topic of the presentation of Professor Jónás Pusztay of Berzsenyi Dániel College (Hungary) was Terminology and language policy. Katalina Misad, working at Comenius University in Bratislava (Slovakia), spoke about semantic and pragmatic aspects of the development (creation) of special language. He also briefly discussed the situation of the Hungarian language in Slovakia. In the presentation Changes in Lithuanian and Latin four-word anatomy terms, Nijolė Litevkienė, a PhD student from Šiauliai University, compared Lithuanian and Latin four-word anatomy terms. Hungarian researcher Maria Solymosi (University of Szeged, Hungary) read a presentation on genetics terms. Two reports were devoted to the terminology of religion. Aušra Rimkutė (Institute of Lithuanian Language) read a presentation on the development of terms in Lithuanian Catholic catechisms of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Zoltan Rihmer (Peter Pazmany Catholic University, Hungary) spoke about language policy and terminology of the Catholic Church’s religion. Arvis Tavastas, working at Tallinn Pedagogical University and Tartu University, spoke about terminology resources and their evaluation criteria. Balazs Kis introduced the conference participants to the European Commission-supported project EuroTermBank. The second day of the conference was devoted not only to terminology, but also to terminography problems. Professor Vilmos 174 Voigth of the University of Budapest (Hungary) spoke about MaTT — the Hungarian Terminology Council, which was founded only in the summer of 2005. Adam Kis (University of Budapest, Hungary) pointed out that the rapid development of science, technology and production has to be accompanied by rapid development of terminology. Tõnu Seilenthal (University of Tartu, Estonia) told about the preparation of the Estonian-- Hungarian dictionary (60 000 words). The dictionary is scheduled to be published in 2006. The linguist briefly discussed which fields are included in this dictionary. Hungarian scholars Gőza Balazs (Berzsenyi Dániel College, Hungary) and Judita Szilvia Varnai (University of Szeged, Hungary) read presentations on the terminology situation in the Hungarian language. Katalina Tolnay (TRADOS, Hungary) introduced the paid term base (see www.translationzone.com), explained how to use it. The two-day conference focused on terminology in various fields and on language and language policy in general. The experience of terminology was also shared.
