Computer Bild Lithuania portal glossary terms AUŠRA RIMKUTĖ Lietuvių kalbos institutas omputer Bild Lietuva — a biweekly magazine published in a 13 thousand-print run for computer and other digital technology users. The latest articles on various information and communication technology issues can also be found online at www.computerbild.lt. Since, as stated, the aim of the magazine- ’s editorial staff is to print “extremely practical and richly illustrated texts written in a very simple and understandable language- ”, apparently that is why the portal includes a dictionaries (http://www.computerbild.lt/zodynelis), which provides a little more than half a thousand terms and other lexical units. These are the most commonly used terms in the journal articles in computer science and related fields. The structure of the glossary is the usual one — first the term or other lexical unit is given, then its definition. There is also an English translation. Terms are not spelled out. Such a glossary is very useful for the readers of the journal, so the efforts of the portal creators to organize the terminology used in the articles of the publication in one of the most changing fields — computer science — are supported. Computer terminology has been managed for more than three decades, so there is something to rely on, for example, the latest V. Dagienė, G. Grigas, T. Jevsikovas Encyclopedic Dictionary of Computer Science (2008, second revised and supplemented edition, hereinafter — EKŽ; first edition of this dictionary — 2005), which contains about 4 thousand terms, as well as the largest publication in this field — V. more than 5 thousand terms and phrases; Four-language dictionary of terms Informatika: lietuviy—angly—rusy—germany (1997) prepared by R. Valatkaitė, Z. Kudirka and others. All these dictionaries have the approval of the State Lithuanian Language, so they are also reviewed by linguist terminologues. It is a pity that the portal developers and administrators do not use them. Computer Bild Lietuva portal žoTerminologija | 2009 | 16 277 dynelis —perfect example, which can be seen when looking at it. how difficult it is for the innovations provided in these dictionaries, especially the equivalents of foreign words, to become established in the everyday language not only of computer enthusiasts, but also of computer specialists. First of all, the glossary provides an outdated list of terms, such as hard disk, external hard disk, hard disk partition, wizard, installation wizard, subdomain, bitrate, screen shot, boot disc, boot sector, etc. The glossary also provides a list of terms that are not used in the glossary, such as "boot sector" and "boot disk". console (= control panel) (angl. console EKŽ), router (= router selector) (angl. router EKŽ), safe mode (= restricted mode) (angl. safe mode EKŽ), firewall (= firewall EKŽ), banner (= banner EKŽ), etc. It is a pity that we often take the easiest route — using a litified English. In the dictionary it is usually written in non-Lithuanian quotes, for example: „hostingas“ (= shelter). "hacker" (= hacker) (hacker EKZ). ‘skin’ (=design), ‘script’ (=script), ‘compression’ (=compression), ‘notebook’ (=notebook), etc. In the glossary, the term "firmware" is given in quotation marks. Another problem is the use of English abbreviations for terms that have Lithuanian equivalents in Lithuanian computer dictionaries, e.g. : ADSL (=asymmetric digital subscriber line, could be used the abbreviation ASAL) (angl. asymmetric digital subscriber line, ADSL EKŽ), DSL (=digital subscriber line, DSL EKŽ), „VoIP“ (=interneto telefonija) (angl. internet phone, internet telephony, IP telephony. VoIP, voice over internet protocol EKZ) and others. The names of various communication protocols, technologies, formats, formal languages, and others are made up of abbreviations borrowed directly from other languages (usually English). The dictionary provides inaccurate names, often * Correction of terms is based on the Encyclopedia of Computer Dictionary (2008). 278 Aušra Rimkutė | Computer Bild Lithuania portal glossary terms
nai has no related explanatory words, e.g.: 3GP (=3GP technology), A4 (=A4 format), AVI (= AVI audio and video format) (audio/video interleaved, AVI EKŽ), BMP (=BMP format), BIOS program (angl. BIOS (basic input /output system) EKZ) (=BIOS sistema), GSM (=pasauliné mobiliojo ryšio sistema, GSM sistema) (angl. GSM, GSM system, global system for mobile communications EKZ), GPS (=globaliné padėties nustatymo sistema. GPS sistema) (angl. GPS, global positioning system EKZ), HTML (=HTML kalba) (angl. Hypertext Markup Language EKZ), JPEG. JPG (=]PEG format. JPG format) (format JPEG EKZ), JAVA (=]JAVA language, Java language) (Java EKZ), MP3 (=MP3 format) (MP3, MPEG layer 3 EKZ), RAW (=RAW format). WAP (=WAP protokolas) (angl. WAP, wireless application protocol EKZ) ir kt. Separately, it is necessary to discuss the quite commonly used English word Bluetooth. Bluetooth is a protocol for communication using very short radio waves (microwaves). According to Gintautas Grigas, it would be simpler and clearer to say microwave connection, and we should not use the naked trademark (Bluetooth) — it is better to specify the explanatory word:, Bluetooth" protocol (Grigas 2009: 10). G. Grigas suggests, when it comes to communication and it is necessary to specify its protocol, to use microwave communication via Bluetooth protocol or shorter: communication via Bluetooth protocol (Grigas 2009: 10). A very similar case is the abbreviation of the English term Wireless Fidelity WiFi is available. WiFi is a wireless technology. WiFi can also be a trademark. Thus, when it is necessary to name the technology itself, the symbolic name should not be translated. When it comes to describing the type of connection, it would be sufficient to say wireless rather than Wi-Fi, wireless Internet rather than Wi-Fi Internet, wireless Internet instead of Wi-Fi Internet. The glossary contains more correctable terms, e.g.: wireless connection station (=wireless connection station), wireless internet hotspot (=wireless internet hotspot), wireless internet (=wireless internet, mobile internet), wireless network (=wireless network), wireless device (=wireless device), wireless router (=wireless router), content management system (=content management system, CMS). auto-start (=autorun EKZ), handwriting recognition (=handwriting recognition EKZ), file system (=file allocation system, file system EKZ.), pop-up windows (=pop-up window) Terminology | 2009 | 16 279
(angl. popup, popup window, pop-up window EK Ž), uninterruptible power supply (UPS) (=uninterruptible power supply) (angl. uninterruptible power supply, UPS EKŽ) and others. The type of object, distinctive feature in compound terms should be expressed in the noun form of the adjective, e.g.: virtual disk (=virtual disk) (cf. engl. virtual disk), virtual memory (=virtual memory) (cf. engl. virtual memory). When speaking about the characteristics of a concept, it is better to use the descriptive noun, e.g., command line, credit card, system tray, clock speed. Sometimes the singular would be enough, e.g. hackers (=hacker), system files (=system file). keywords (=keyword) etc. By the way, it is strange that the term keywords (These are words that describe the information we are looking for. In search pages we usually enter these words in order to find related websites.) and its synonym meaningful word (English "keyword"). A word that describes the information in a text (article, webpage, book). Computer Bild Lithuania's keywords are "computer"; IT Magazine Computer Bild Lietuva, etc.) are provided and defined separately in the glossary. Keyword —value (see Akelaitienė 2003 for more information), a meaningful word could be used instead. In addition to the latter, the basic word is also provided. The definitions of the terms are given from a new line. It is usually explained quite broadly and in detail, giving examples. As already mentioned, some terms can also be found in their English equivalents. It would be appropriate to do this in a coherent manner. The term is also used in synonymous terms, usually foreign ones, such as disk image, image (= complete disk copy). It is a pity that there are no references to standardisation. The language of the definitions is also not always correct, there are both stylistic and proofreading errors. The glossary would be much more valuable if all heading terms were spelled. The review raises only some relevant questions of the use of terms, in order to show that there are still things to be corrected. By correcting the inaccuracies, the dictionary would be much more valuable for readers, SOURCE http://www. computerbild.lt/zodynelis 280 Aušra Rimkutė | Computer Bild Lithuania portal glossary terms
