JOLANTA GAIVENYTĖ-BUTLER Lithuanian Language Institute In the 1900s, when the first Lithuanian terminology dictionary was published, the number of Lithuanian terminology publications gradually increased. A separate book published in the bibliography index Lithuanian language term dictionaries (Gaivenytė-Butler, Keinys, Noreikaitė 2008) and in the annual bibliography indexes published in the journal of terminology Latest Lithuanian term dictionaries (Gaivenytė-Butler 2007, Gaivenytė-Butler 2008) registered over 500 various Lithuanian terminology publications published until 2009! —dictionaries of terms, lists of terms prepared in separate booklets, dictionaries of school and educational terms, encyclopedias of various fields. medical nomenclatures, animal and plant nomenclatures (see Figure 1). Some of these publications were used only by specialists in a very narrow field or satisfied the needs of a certain period, others grew into larger dictionaries and laid the foundations for the development of Lithuanian terminology in various fields. After the restoration of independence, Lithuanian terminology began to grow rapidly. Over 370 term dictionaries appeared in independent Lithuania, of which about 240 term dictionaries were published in 1998-2008. On average, more dictionaries have been published each year in this decade than in the 1960s as a whole (see Figure 2). The publication of Lithuanian terminology dictionaries in the last decade was significantly influenced by the 1996-2005 program for the use and education of the state language of the Republic of Lithuania, which was approved at the end of 1995 and which provided for the development of the terminology of the Lithuanian language, the dissemination of Lithuanian terminology, the preparation and publication of terminology dictionaries and other terminology publications, the publication of the Lithuanian-English dictionary and the publication of the English-Lithuanian dictionary. of which the bibliographic index is published in this issue of the journal "Terminologija". These work on terminology development remained in the new State Language Standardization, Use, Education and Dissemination Programme 2006—2015. In 1996, the first publications with the mark of this program appeared, among them — German-Lithuanian, Lithuanian-German automotive terms dictionary by A. Žitkutė. In 1997, the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language (VLKK) took up the approval of the terminology dictionaries (until then this work was carried out by the Terminology Department of the Lithuanian Language Institute). * The lists of terms “Technical terms: for consideration” (1960-1969, 29 notebooks) issued by the institutes of the Lithuanian SSR Academy of Sciences in separate notebooks and the lists of terms “Patent terms: for consideration” (1970-1973, 8 notebooks) issued by the Republican Institute of Scientific and Technical Information and Propaganda are counted as one dictionary. tmi wn it Terminology | 2009 | 16 dictionaries approval rules. In the same year, the first dictionaries of terms approved by the VLKK were published: Z. Kudirka, A. Mačernius, K. Paulauskas, J. Riaubūnas, B. Stulpinas, D. Šveikauskienė and R. Valatkaitė Informatika: lietuviy—angly—rusy- —deuciey language terms dictionary, D. Ramonienė Christian iconography dictionary and V. Valiukėnas and P. Žilinskas International basic and general metrology terms dictionary. VLKK Decision No. 59 of 30 January 1997 on the approval of glossaries contains the following points:,.1. The dictionaries of terms prepared for printing, published in a circulation of more than 100 copies, must be submitted for approval to the State Lithuanian Language Commission. 2. Dictionaries must be submitted to the State Lithuanian Language Commission by publishers” (KK 1997). In 2001, the first paragraph was amended as follows: “printed or electronic dictionaries of terms prepared for distribution are submitted for approval to the State Lithuanian Language Commission” (CC 2001). In 2004, new rules for the evaluation of glossaries were adopted. In the VLKK decision Regarding the rules for the evaluation of terminology dictionaries, the previously valid requirements remain in force —printed and electronic terminology dictionaries prepared for public distribution are submitted to the State Lithuanian Language Commission for evaluation; dictionaries of terms must be submitted to the State Lithuanian Language Commission by publishers (KK 2004). This requirement is not always met. The third chart shows the ratio of dictionaries approved by the VLKK and those published without approval in 1998-2008. The VLKK approved dictionaries include the glossaries of plant names considered by the VLKK Terminology Subcommittee. Figure 3. Most of the larger and more important dictionaries of terms of the last decade have received this approval. In total, almost seventy glossaries have been positively assessed by the VLKK during this period. The vast majority of approved dictionaries are from the fields of technology and natural sciences. Most of the VLKK approved dictionaries of physics, chemistry, engineering and related fields have been published: the second revised edition of the International Dictionary of Basic and General Metrology Terms by V. Biologists have actively managed the terminology of their field. The VLKK approved R. Jankevičienė’s Dictionary of Botanical Names (1998), O. Rupainienė’s Trumpas English-Lithuanian and Lithuanian-English Dictionary of Plant Biology Terms (1998), N. Lapinskienė’s Explanatory Dictionary of Rhizoology Terms (2001), three publications prepared by D. Kisielienė, I. Grigiene and A. Grigas — the Dictionary of Cultural Plants and Weeds (1998), the Dictionary of Dendrology (2001) and the Dictionary of Ornamental Plants (2007). Z. Gudžinskas has prepared a number of lists of different plant names (citrus plants and their fruits, oil plants and oil pressed from them, cereals and their products, nuts and their derivatives, edible seeds and their ripening plants, cereals and their products, spices, fruits and their derivatives, vegetables, plants included in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), which were approved by the Terminology Subcommission of the CITES and published in separate booklets. A number of law and economic dictionaries were published during this period. It is unfortunate that the editors of these important and not only for specialists relevant dictionaries do not seek the approval of the VLKK. In the decade, only one dictionaries in each of these areas has been approved — V. Bitinaitė’s English-Lithuanian Educational Dictionary of Legal Terms (1998) and B. Martinkauskas, B. Neverauskas, A. Sakala, R. Venskas and V. Žilinskas’ Explanatory Dictionary of Company Management Terms (2000). Four approved military dictionaries have been published: E. Žaris Enciklopedinis karybos žodynas (2008). Three dictionaries of art and architecture have been approved: Dailės žodynas (Dictionary of Art, edited by J. Mulevičiūtė (1999)), L. Kitkauskienės and N. Kitkausko English-Lithuanian Explanatory Dictionary of Architecture (2004) and Cyril M. Harris’ Illustrated Dictionary of the History of Architecture: English-Lithuanian (compiled and edited by A. Jankevičienė, 2007). Four VLKK approved dictionaries were published by the Lithuanian Labour Market Training Service —D. 2003), Managers and Managers: Trilingual Explanatory Glossary (2006) and Engineers, Technicians and Technologists: Trilingual Explanatory Glossary (2005) by R. Andriuškevičienė, A. Tamulevičius and V. Valiukėnas and Explanatory Glossary of Qualifications System Terms by R. Gatautis, R. Gudauskas, O. Gurskienė, T. R. Jovaiša, R. Laužackas, J. Stravinskienė, V. Tūtlis and V. Valiukėnas (2008). In 1998-2008, more than ten school dictionaries and dictionary were published, but only three have the approval of the VLKK —K. Ponelienė's School Dictionary of History and Mythology Terms: Ancient Greece and Rome (1998), K. Čuprinska and I. Slavinska's Lithuanian- -Polish, Polish-Lithuanian Dictionary of Mathematical Terms (2001) and P. Alekna, A. Bakščius and A. Baškienė's School Dictionary of Mathematics (2003). The VLKK approval is usually sought by Lithuanian university lecturers and research institute employees who prepare dictionaries of terms. Many of these specialist terminologists continue the work of their teachers (the geographer V. Gudelis, the physicist P. Brazdžiūnas, the chemists K. Daukšas and Z. Mačionis, the botanist J. Dagis and others) on the creation and management of terms, which began several decades ago. During the period under consideration, several approved dictionaries were prepared by employees of the Institute of Botany and the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics. Lithuanian technical universities take a responsible approach to the preparation of terminology dictionaries. All the dictionaries published by Kaunas University of Technology or prepared by its employees over the last decade (the Explanatory Dictionary of Wood Terms (1998), the Explanatory Dictionary of Electrical Engineering Terms (1999), the Explanatory Dictionary of Business Management Terms (2000), the Explanatory Dictionary of Textile Terms (2001) and the Explanatory Dictionary of Thermal and Nuclear Technology Terms (2004)) have the approval of the VLKK. The VLKK positively evaluated four of the six dictionaries of terms published by Vilnius Gediminas Technical University or prepared by its employees in 1998-2008 (the aforementioned English-Lithuanian Dictionary of Hydrotechnical Terms (2000), Dictionary of Automation Terms (2004), English-Lithuanian Explanatory Dictionary of Architecture (2004) and Explanatory Dictionary of Rail Transport Terms (2006)). Vilnius University staff prepared about fifteen dictionaries in various fields during the period under consideration. Nine of them have been approved by the VLKK, three of the approved ones were prepared together with other higher education institutions or 258 Jolanta Gaivenytė-Butler | Lietuviškų terminų žodynų leidyba... Research institutes (mentioned German—- Lithuanian Medical Terms Dictionary (2000), Radioelectronics Terms Dictionary (2000), Medical Histology and Embryology Nomenclature = Nomina histologica et embryologica (together with Kaunas Medical University, 2001), Bird Anatomy Terms = Nomina anatomica avium (together with Lithuanian Academy of Veterinary Medicine, 2002), the second revised and supplemented edition of the Explanatory Dictionary of Chemical Terms (together with other institutions, 2003), Fish Names Dictionary (2005). Five-language explanatory dictionary of metrology terms (2006), the second revised and supplemented edition of the dictionary of physics terms (2007) and the encyclopedic dictionary of political science (2007). Three approved military dictionaries —Encyclopedic Dictionary of Protection against Destruction Measures (2002), Artillery Encyclopedia Dictionary (2004) and Encyclopedia of Military Dictionary (2008)—were prepared at the General Jon Žemaitis Lithuanian Military Academy. The Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts (Dictionary of Fine Arts (1999) (together with the Institute of Culture and Art)) and the Lithuanian Academy of Physical Culture (Dictionary of Sports Terms (2002)) have prepared one approved dictionary each. In 1998-2008, all nine dictionaries of terms published by the Institute of Science and Encyclopedia Publishing have received the approval of the VLKK. The following encyclopedias published by this institution are also to be considered as significant publications of Lithuanian terminology: the third-volume Agricultural Encyclopedia (chairman of the scientific editorial board A. Kusta, 1998-2007) and the Musical Encyclopedia (chairman of the scientific editorial board J. Antanavičius, 2000-2007), two one-volume editions of the Lithuanian Language Encyclopedia by V. Ambraz, A. Girdenis, K. Morkūnas, A. Sabaliauskas, V. Urbutis, A. Valeckienė and A. Vanagas (1999 and 2008) and the fourth-volume Technical Encyclopedia (chairman of the editorial board E. K. Zavadskas), which has been published since 2000. Lithuanian higher education institutions have published a number of dictionaries that have not been approved by the VLKK. Some of them have not developed an approved glossary or dictionary of terms for a decade. In 1998-2008, V. Bitinaitė, a lecturer at Mykolas Romeris University, prepared the only approved dictionary of legal terms. Other four dictionaries of this university (V. Janulevičienė, I. Darginavičienė, N. Burkšaitienė, A. Liuolienė and V. Vaičiūnienė’s English-Lithuanian Teaching Dictionary of Legal Order (2001), L. Addo, L. Dantienė, I. Sagaitienė and V. Janulevičienė’s English-Lithuanian Teaching Dictionary of Legal Order (2002)) are also available in the Lithuanian language. N. Slaminskienė’s German-Lithuanian Legal Order Dictionary (2004), D. Užpalienė- ’s English-Lithuanian Explanatory-Teaching Guide to Customs Terms (2007) and A. Buračas’s Statistical Terms: English-Lithuanian-- French—Russian—German Languages: Dictionary (2008) were published without the approval of the VLKK. The staff of the Lithuanian Academy of Veterinary Medicine have prepared two approved anatomy and three unapproval dictionaries of veterinary medicine (V. Nečiūnas, V. Nečiūnienė and A. Leonavičienė Lexicum veterinarium breve = Dictionary of Veterinary Terms (2007) and R. Micikevičienė and A. Sederevičius Veterinary English—Lithuanian and Lithuanian—English Dictionary and Illustrated English-Lithuanian Dictionary of Veterinary Medicine (both 2008)). Unapproved A. Gailiūnienės and R. Želnienės dictionary Basic concepts of biochemistry (2007) was prepared at the Lithuanian Academy of Physical Culture. Approximately one third of the dictionaries of terms prepared by Vilnius University employees are not approved: R. Bartaška and E. Zaikauskas English-Lithuanian Accounting Terms Dictionary (1998), A. Buračo Enciklopedinis bankininkystės ir komercijos žinynas (1999), P. Kadziauskas Stereochemijos sąvokos (1999), V. Vitkauskienė Dailės terminų žodynas = Dictionnaire des termes des beaux arts: French Lithuanian, Lithuanian—French (1999), V. Skučas Electrochemistry: encyclopedic guide (2004) and D. Ramanauskienė Angly—Lithuanian Medical Terms Abbreviations Dictionary (2005). Between 1998 and 2008, ten military dictionaries were prepared at the General Jon Žemaitis Lithuanian Military Academy. In addition to the three approved dictionaries, seven unapproved translation dictionaries have been published with an experimental subtitle: G. Laugalienės and M. Mironaite- ’s Military English-Lithuanian Dictionary (2003), Lietuviy—angly language military dictionary (2004) and Teaching English-Lithuanian and Lithuanian—English language military dictionary (2008), M. Pukienės and J. Rukštelienės Military French Lithuanian Dictionary (2003) and Lithuanian-French language military dictionary (2005), B. Gaidelienė- ’s Military German-Lithuanian Dictionary (2003) and Lietuviy—Germany language military dictionary (2007). The Lithuanian University of Agriculture has prepared three dictionaries for non-approved students: N. Račkauskaitė’s Learning Practice of Agronomic Terms (1998), D. Skarbalius’s Dictionary of Basic Terms in Environmental Economics (2003) and N. Petniūnienė’s, R. Bartkevičienė’s, R. Lapytė’s, N. Račkauskaitė’s and S. Statkevičienė’s Educational Dictionary of Basic Agricultural Terms: Lithuanian—English—- Russian—German (2003). Two unapproved dictionaries were prepared at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University: G. Bureika, A. Pelėdienė and Š. Mikaliūnas Explanatory Dictionary of Transport Engineering Terms and Abbreviations in English (2004) and R. E. Katalynaitė and L.
