This two-year project can be said to be a natural continuation of another international project carried out a few years earlier, eTranslation Termbank (No. 2016-EU-IA-0122). The latter project collected terminology resources in all official EU languages, as well as in Norwegian and Icelandic, and the data from those resources are used to improve the quality of the European Commission’s machine translation system, eTranslation (see Pesliakaitė 2017 for more details). The public terminology resources collected and technologically processed during that project are available on the eurotermbank.com portal (see Fig. 1) and in the ELRC-SHARE¹ repository. The aim of the new project, known briefly as FedTerm, is to develop a federated eTranslation TermBank network, enabling organizations and institutions in EU Member States to install individual federated eTranslation TermBank nodes locally (federated nodes). These nodes will be connected to a central node, or, more simply, a central term bank (eTranslation TermBank, also known as EuroTermBank), and their data will be synchronized regularly. Thus, the latest and updated multilingual terminology will reach Europe’s largest centralized terminology database for European languages, EuroTermBank, where every user will be able to search for terms and term collections. Terminology resources will be transferred through the central node to the ELRC-SHARE repository, enabling their data to be used by the machine translation system mentioned above, eTranslation2. 1 ELRC – European Language Resource Coordination – is an initiative that aims to collect language resources in all EU Member States, as well as in Iceland and Norway. The collected data are stored in the ELRC-SHARE repository (https://www.elrc-share.eu/) and used by the eTranslation machine translation service. 2 By the way, eTranslation, a machine translation system valued for its data security, is also available free of charge to Lithuanian public administration institutions, small and medium-sized enterprises, university language departments, EU institu- Terminologija | 2021 | 28 275 Fig. 1. The portal eurotermbank.com One of the most important results of the project is an open set of terminology management tools (terminology toolkit), developed by the language technology company Tilde (Latvia). Institutions and organizations will be able to install it free of charge. The toolkit will make it convenient to collect, manage and publish terminology in their own fields, and to share terminology resources. Authorized users will be able to easily create terminology collections, add to and edit them, import and export terminology data (in.xlsx, csv.,.tbx and other file formats), discuss individual terms, etc. (see Figs. 2–3). This will make terminology management more convenient and, presumably, more appealing. An installed toolkit will be registered in the federation network and become one of its nodes. If, for one reason or another, creators or owners of terminology resources do not wish to install the terminology toolkit, they will still be able to publish and share their terminology resources on the federation network through one of the network’s national terminology portals (federation network nodes), at least eight of which are planned to be created during the project. freelance translators, etc.; it is particularly suitable for translating specialist texts. The translation tool is accessible via https://webgate.ec.europa.eu/etranslation/public/welcome.html. 276 Asta Mitkevičienė | Federacinis terminologijos tinklas Fig. 2. Creating a new terminology collection in a federation node It is also possible to join the federation network with an existing terminology database, using an application programming interface (API). The Federated eTranslation TermBank Network project encourages the sharing of terminology resources, increases their accessibility, and rationalizes and standardizes terminology management. The project, coordinated by the aforementioned language technology company Tilde, involves representatives from eight countries. These are the Institute of the Lithuanian Language (Lithuania), the Culture Information Systems Centre (Latvia), the Institute of the Estonian Language (Estonia), the Swedish Institute for Standards and the Institute for Language and Folklore (Sweden), the University of Copenhagen (Denmark), the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies (Iceland), TermNet (Austria), and the Jožef Stefan Institute (Slovenia).
