For example, in Ireland there are Irish people, in Russia – Russian people, but Belgians are people of Flemish, Walloon or German nationality living in Belgium, the word Angolans means the Angolans, not the nationality, because there are many peoples and ethnic groups in Angola: Ovimbundu, Bambundu, Bakongo, Ovambo, etc. This non-linguistic thing is recalled because, due to the influence of the languages of the larger countries, nationality and citizenship are often confused in the Lithuanian language. in Lithuanian language dictionaries and encyclopedias1 See more On the website of the State Lithuanian Language Commission (hereinafter – VlKK) http://www. vlkk.lt/nutarimai/svetimvardziai.html 2 Kalbų klasifikatorius yra parengtas pagal tarptautinį kalbų pavadinimų standartą Iso 369-1, discussed at the meeting of the VlKK Subcommission on Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation and approved by Order No. 1b-88 of the Director of the Customs Department of 31 January 2003 (Journal of Laws 2003, No. 14-590). 3 Pasaulio vietovardžiai. Valstybių gyventojų pavadinimai ir tautovardžiai 81 pedijose šie du dalykai yra skiriami, tiesa, tai irgi kelia problemų. tarkim, it is clear how to define a Latvian, an English – it is “a person of a certain nation”. The Swiss or Sri Lankan definition is also clear – “residents of a čiau kaip apibūdinti amerikiečius, brazilus, kanadiečius? čia riba tarp tautocertain state”. Another is a more complex problem, how to call the inhabitants of some states or nationalities in general. 82 Kalbos Kultūra | 81 is very productive. Sometimes it is really difficult to decide why one noun with the suffix -ietis, australiečių, bosniečių, braziliečių, islandiečių, kiniečių, libiečių, makedoniečių -ė is considered normative and another not. in such cases, it seems that tradition should be neretai su ja gyventojų pavadinimai daromi ir tais atvejais, kai visai netinka. preferred to systematic8. The official names of the country are: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, čiai. tokios formos atsirado iš valstybių, kuriose gyvena šių tautų žmonės, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistãnas. tačiau reikia nepamiršti, kad lietuvių kalboje šios valstybės Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, sunkiau ištariami visai nereikalingi. Pasitaiko variantų azerbaidžanai, baltaTurkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan. They are used to make shorter people names, therefore longer, Russians, Moldavians9 and so on. Some names are slightly rarer, but they are found in one or the other llu vas, -ė, enciklopedijoje, žodyne, plg.: alžyriẽtis, -ė, argentiniẽtis, -ė, birmiẽtis, -ė, bokolumbiẽtis, -ė, kostarikiẽtis, -ė, kuweitiẽtis, -ė, laosiẽtis, -ė10, perujiẽtis, -ė, šrilankiẽtis, -ė ir kt. Other similar names of populations or nationalities are not recorded in the above-mentioned sources, but they are regularly made with the suffix -ietis, -ė, gel todėl šie visiškai taisyklingi žodžiai turėtų atsirasti ir žodynuose (beje, dautheir use on the Internet), e.g.: bangladešiẽtis, -ė, beliziẽtis, -ė, gaboniẽtis, -ė, grenadiẽtis, -ė, gvinėjiẽtis, -ė, cypriẽtis, -ė, lesotiẽtis, -ė, libananiẽtis, -ė, maliẽtis, -ė, maršaliẽtis, -ė11, mauriciẽtis, -ė, rwandiẽtis, -ė, timoriẽtis, -ė, togiẽtis, -ė, tonganẽtis, -ė, venezueliẽtis, -ė, zimbabweẽtis, -ė, etc. (see table 1). 8 See also: l i u t k e v i č i e n ė D. about names of nationalities and populations with the suffix -ietis, -ė. – Language Culture 74, 2001, 60–65; M iliūnaitė r. Commentaries on Language User Surveys, www.kalbosnamai.lt 9 The name Moldavian is of correct pronunciation and fully justified, because now the state and pavadinimas nebe Moldavija, bet Moldova, tačiau tautovardis moldavas jau seniai įsigalėjęs its change would not be worthwhile. 10 Laosietis randamas tŽŽ, ltE ir VlE. Šiuose šaltiniuose pateikiamos dvi formos – lao (pafloor) and Lao people. For our purposes, the form laosiečiai would be sufficient, especially considering that this people speaks Lao (such a form is also recorded in the Classification of Languages). 11 the author hesitated whether to call the inhabitants of this country the inhabitants of the Marshall Islands (Republic) or Marshallians. Two arguments weighed down: 1) the Marshall is shorter and therefore more comfortable; 2) some foreign sources (e.g., uNtErM) already include the Marshallian language (English: Marshallian, French: marshallais, Spanish: marshallés). Therefore, a shorter name is better if you need to name that language.
D. lIutKEVIČIENė. Names of the inhabitants of the states and ethnic names 83 A group of names of the inhabitants that do not comply with the rule that from a placename ending in -ija, one should avoid (if possible) making names with the suffix -ietis, -ė. such names are: gambiẽtis, -ė (: Gambia), keniẽtis, -ė (: Kenya), mauritaniẽtis, -ė (: Mauritania), namibiẽtis, -ė (: Namibia), tanzaniẽtis, -ė (: tanzanija), zambiẽtis, -ė (: Zambia). as if the forms gámbis, -ė, kènis, -ė, mauritãnis, -ė, namobbis, -ė, tanzãnis, -ė, zámbis, -ė should be used12. However, there are too many exceptions to this rule to be applied in all cases. no doubt in force pan. When making a new, previously unfixed name, it is better to choose a more usual one with the suffix -ietis, -ė13. this is how language users act – there are many forms with the suffix -ietis, -ė on the Internet, but shorter forms are almost non-existent. There are several states whose names are biwords, but they can be considered as tradiciniai pavadinimai australas, -ė (: australija), brazilas, -ė (: brazilija) ir monowords. are intended names where the second period is variable and the first not, cf. : Guinea-Bissau, Burkina Faso, Costa Rica, San Marino, Sierra Leone. Some of these monosyllabic names of inhabitants are already recorded in many written sources, such as kostarikiẽtis, -ė (also compare Puertorikiẽtis, -ė: Puèrto räkkas). Analogously, we can make the conjugation -ė, burkinafasiẽtis, -ė, sanmariniẽtis, -ė, sierraleoniẽtis, -ė. It would be difficult to make single-word names of the inhabitants from them, so it remains to simply call the people of those countries inhabitants: the animal of Antigua and Barbuda, -a14, the animal of the Central African Republic, -a15, Draamblio 13 More about this type of names see l i u t k e v i č i e n ė D. (min. str.). 14 Similarly, the name of the inhabitants of that country (and of other states whose names are plurals) is treated in other languages, cf. de Antigua y nevertheless this name is made up, cf. fr. Antiguais et Barbudien (data from the language of Antigua and Barbuda) is not worth making *antiguian or *barbudian, because it is important who lives in that country, Káulo Krañto (Respùblikos)16 gyvéntojas, -a, Naujõsios Zelándijos gyvénto12 Forma zambis, -ė fiksuojama DŽ6e. Barbuda, rus. (из / житель) Антигуа и Барбуды (duomenys iš uNtErM). tiesa, kai kur uNtErM), angl. Antiguan(s), Barbudan(s) (duomenys iš CIa), tačiau manytina, kad lietuo ne vienoje iš jos salų. 15 Some online sources refer to the people of the Central African Republic and South Africa as Africans. out of context it is inaccurate, because then african would have 3 meanings (also „afrikos žemyno gyventojas“). Plg. šių gyventojų pavadinimus kitomis kalbomis: angl. Central African, fr. Central African Republic, isp. Centroafricano, rus. (из / житель) Центральноафриканской Республики (duomenys iš uNtErM). 16 with parentheses (here and below) – longer official form (as for the names of countries), without parenthesestų – trumpesnė.
84 Languages Culture | 81 jas, -a17, Papua New Guinean, -a18, Solomon Islands, -a19, Saudi Arabian, -a20, etc. (see table 3 for details). some of the names already discussed should be discussed separately in a slightly different aspect, because they, presented without a definition of meaning, could be misleading. As already mentioned at the beginning of the article, the names of the people and the names of the inhabitants often do not coincide, because there is hardly any state inhabited by only one people. From tradition, usually when speaking about well-known states, it is said that, for example, the inhabitants of Latvia are Latvians, the inhabitants of Ukraine are Ukrainians, etc., although this is not entirely true, in these states live and others need to name the inhabitants of the entire state, emphasizing that there live non-bi people, the composition of the population can be unknown. therefore the end of the article presentation. Some names may be confusing at first glance – Fiji and fimi means nationality, the latter means tautų žmonių. tačiau tai visiems puikiai žinoma ir nieko neklaidina. Jei priall the inhabitants of the state mentioned. mas with the name of the state (it is not always viena tauta, taip ir sakoma – tos valstybės gyventojai. bet tolimesnių valstyclear which name from which it is sometimes treated and for political reasons21. In these cases, muose sąrašuose nurodoma, kur yra tautovardis, o kur – gyventojo pavaditwo words or two meanings of the same word are distinguished (see Table 4 for details). When džietis, kongas ir kongietis, bosnis ir Bosnijos ir Hercegovinos gyventojas. Pirexamining such names, it was observed that most often (although not always) the ethnonyms toks skirtumas kartais daromas todėl, kad tauta, kurios pavadinimas siejaare made with the endings -as, -ė, -is, -ė, and the names of the inhabitants of the states17 On the padarytas), neretai tesudaro pusę ar dar mažiau visų valstybės gyventojų. Internet, in the media there is a common form newzealandietis, about which linguists argue quite a bit. in the opinion of the author of the article, it could be used. 18 On the Internet, there are both pafakes and pafakes (but not only pafakes live there). See other languages: English a Papua New Guinean, French. Papua New Guinea, isp. of Papua New Guinea; papua; Papua New Guinea (Papua-New Guinea) Papua New Guinea (Papua New Guinea) Papua New Guinea (Papua New Guinea) 19 By analogy with maršaliẽtis, -ė (: Marshall Islands) should be *salomonietis, -ė, but Solomon Islands (as a state) and Solomon Islands (as an archipelago) only overlap in part. therefore the word *Solomonian, -ė would be misleading, because it could mean a person both from the archipelago of the Solomon Islands (but not necessarily from the state), and from the state of the Solomon Islands (but not necessarily from the archipelago), and from a part of this archipelago that belongs to the state of the Solomon Islands. 20 DŽ6e gives the form saudoarãbas, -ė. of course, the shorter form is more convenient, but by analogy with other one-word names of inhabitants, made from two-word names of states, should be *saudoarabietis, -ė. this form seems strange, so it was decided to choose a composite name. 21 For example, it is not advisable to call a Serb living in Bosnia and Herzegovina a Bosnian.
D. lIutKEVIČIENė. 85 Ethnonyms, it should be remembered that these are not separate, individual words, they are part of a certain system (and not only mai – su priesaga -ietis, -ė (plačiau žr. 1 ir 2 lenteles). Kartais, jei neaišku, kaip daryti naują pavadinimą, galbūt būtų galima remtis ir šiuo faktu. bet kuriuo atveju, darant ar keičiant valstybių gyventojų pavadinimus ir linguistic). If there are, for example, Fijian, Kazakh and Macedonian kabab, then they are spoken by peoples (not the Macedonians of the states). IŠVaDos It is possible to indicate certain principles, according to which some or other names of the inhabitants of the states and ethnic names are given (regulated): 1) t r a d i c i j a – if a word is fixed in dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc., there is no need to change it, unless there are any new facts that need to be taken into account (e.g., if the name of the state changes, ppr. changes the name of its inhabitants (but not the name of the nation); 2) a n a l o g i j a – if the name is not found in the aforementioned sources, it is made by analogy with other similar words already established in the language; (jei yra perujietis, galimas ir vanuatietis, jei yra kostarikietis, taisyklingas ir 3) s i s t e m i š k u m a s – if there is neither tradition nor analogy, but the rules of construction allow – the name is made with the suffix -ietis, -ė. making a ir yra pagrindinė šios priesagos reikšmė. be to, su ja lengviausiai tokio tipo one-word name of a resident may lead to any ambiguity, the inhabitants of the 4) d i s t i n k t y v u m a s – jei valstybės pavadinimas yra keliažodis ir state. geriau tos valstybės gyventojus vadinti sudėtiniu pavadinimu: tam tikros
