From the history of the language of our country 329 FROM THE LANGUAGE OF YOUR COUNTRY STORIES The native land has not yet forgotten the famous Lithuanian dialectologist and language historian Kazis Morkūnas (1929–2008), who was born on St. John’s Day. Kazimierą Pliakalnį in the detached village of Pliakalnis, near Kuaniškiai, Ukmergė district. And he should not forget – he has done a lot of work: he was the main author of the collective work on Lithuanian dialectology of the last century, Lietuvių kalbos atlasas (I–III, 1977–1991), together with co-authors he prepared the first chrestomacy of Lithuanian dialects, Lietuvių kalbos tarmės (1970), he wrote over 300 various publications on dialects and language history. Those with whom the linguist communicated more closely remember with what special love and warmth Kazys Morkūnas spoke about his homeland. Even when he was seriously ill, he hurried to arrange and edit the last publication of his life – the monograph Gelvonai (2009) from the series “Lietuvos valsčiai” published by Versmė publishing house. In the opinion of one of the authors – Vida Girininkienė, “the “Famous People” chapter of this book […] is like a monument to a famous linguist, a warm person and a companion”. But not everything has been put into the books yet. When organizing the personal archive of the linguist, we discovered a small fiber of yellowed leaves (p. 5). First of all, the official letter No. 1 19/9 of 30 March 1970 from the director of the Institute of Party History, Romos Šarmaitis, with the resolution of the then director of the Institute of Lithuanian Language and Literature, Kostas Korsakas, “Dr. "Morris". In this way, now very unusual, R. Šarmaitis sent a string of place names from the former Pabáisko village of Ukmergės county, the neighborhood of his native village Žùkliai. It has been established that these placenames have already been included in the Lithuanian Language Institute's placenames database. According to Marija Razmukaite, senior researcher of the Names and Surnames Department, most of their local teachers were recorded as early as 1935. 1 The abbreviation used in the Scripture is No.
330 LANGUAGE CULTURE | 82 In the Roman Empire, the use of the Roman numerals was not allowed. And it is clear why – because of the many spelling and transposition errors left by an inexperienced writer. They had to be repaired. And apparently, the high political and social status of R. Šarmaitis at that time did not allow him to do so2. This list of placenames has been corrected for obvious errors in the press. The material has been checked with the Lithuanian Language Institute's nomenclature database3. Placenames are given in their current spelling, not transcribed. The editor’s notes are indicated in footnotes (see the attached list of place names). Today, even if they have been spelled incorrectly, these place names can be witnesses of the history of their region, eloquently testifying about the love of the people born here for their native land. Received 07/12/2009 DANGUOLĖ MIKULĖNIENĖ Institute of Lithuanian Language P. Vileišio g. 5, LT-10308 Vilnius, Lithuania [email protected] 2 Romas Šarmaitis, born in 1909 in Žukliai (Ukmergės district), was a well-known member of the revolutionary movement (see Lietuviškoji sovietinė enciklopedija 10, 1983, 537). 3 All the proofreading work was carried out by Marija Razmukaitė, senior researcher of the Namebook Department of the Lithuanian Language Institute. I sincerely thank her for that.
