U QUESTIONS OF THE WORDS II S TSR ACADEMY OF SCIENCES Names of Lakes B. This article, which covers the names of lakes beginning with the letter A, is only part of a larger work about Lithuanian lakes! the names of lakes. This work should consist of an etymological dictionary of lake names and a section that would discuss more broadly the more typical cases of the formation, morphology and semasiology of these names. The etymology is based on the principle that place names should be compared primarily with local names and personal names. For each lake name, the corresponding names are first searched in the Lithuanian, Latvian and Prussian nomenclature and only then the etymologically investigated name is tried to be associated with the corresponding common words of the Baltic languages. Where the semantics of the Baltic language material is not sufficiently clear, the vocabulary of other Indo-European languages is used. The roots of pronouns are broken down by constructive elements only after comparing different variants of the same root of the Belarusian real names, so sometimes a formant or suffix is not distinguished if their distinction is not shown by the comparative material of the nomenclature and if it is not necessary for etymology. Toponymic material is taken from the names of the Lithuanian Language and Literature Institute of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. Everywhere they try to give literary genders and only sometimes dialectal genders, because in the aforementioned collections few lakes names are written in dialect. The name of the lake is also used for all the other lakes in the same area.
