VITKAUSKAS Is regressive assimilation of vowels, so widespread in the Žemaičių dounininkų dialects*, in some cases familiar to some dounininkų ir dialects? ir especially the Kuršėnų dialect described here in more detail?. Of course, it is not possible to speak of a consistent regressive assimilation in the described mudnik dialects, because here only the vowel is affected by this assimilation. e. Before the extremities i <i> *in fir overlapping u<iu<*un and w (Sometimes before ir ie< with the main-ancient accent ¢) pronounced in certain cases is not prolonged, but e pronounced shortly. Ir this happens in all cases where adjacent downish dialects (Raudėnai, Tryškiai, Papilė, Tirkšliai ir etc.) Instead e of have ¢ ir ie ar net e. Regressive assimilation in the Kuršėnai dialect is observed: I. (or for analogy, for ar reluctance to mix with masculine su words): perė“klu (min rei.ktu ben dvijū" peré-klu žadū vistu | usivei.sti min reikty bent dujį ~ perėklių, žadū hens uZvieisti) etc. ir e) In the noun prefix -enis: source "Source", šaltėni, šaltėnie, šaltėniu (but vns. kilm. šaltė'ne: šaltė'ne ūndū" šd'le šaltėnio ~ (v)andué cold); in surnames: dru'ktėnis, druwktéiw, dru'ktėni; gluodėnis, gluodėiiu', gluodėni; yeast, yeast, yeast (but sweetie's not ~ Blue), mildew, mildew, mildew (but the mouse's not ~ Pelénio), in village names: gintėjiu: gintéiu iž dunauskiki parė'jusi m iš Gintėnų Dunauskikė is over and so on. f) Masculine adjectives in the upper case -esnis (N.C. only) nominatiir ve suffix): smaller (but smaller: the myotric whole contains smaller bits --+female whole must be smaller), smaller; strugėsnis "shorter", strugėsni; colder, colder (but vns. kilm. cold"sne: niior cold'sne undenc | par. šil.c ū'sus nora = šaltėsnio (v)dndens, too warm &sqs); vi'rėsni'sis ~ vyresnysis (but vi‘résiuoje the elder’s), ~ vi‘résiuju (so much turning had vi'réshiu’ spi‘ri so much | ka feeling had, ju that the elder ~ kicked) etc. ir Female > "genus has no case where the assimilation would be (jvardziuotni badvardziai in dialect are usually IV accents). 2. Assimilation sometimes occurs in ir cases where it does not go e directly before the syllable with the final i<i< *in or the preceding u < ū< *un: a) when there is a syllable with the constituent vowel e in the interval: sėseri (true sėseri pei.k | uo tu neustioji ~tikrq sėserį peika, o tū neužstoji)- *, šėpeti (where you put the brush and šėpeti =-to whom you put the brush). The words kėbelis "clumsy work, hardship", cf. lk. kėbelis" (kėbelis su ti"k vaikū' ~ kébelis with so many vaikū), vépelis® "inside-eyed, stupid" (kuoks vėpeliš če nepadari's | čė gé'ra vi'ra rei.k ~ what a stupid thing this is not going to do, this is a good man's job), žėbelis "talks nothings" and so on. b) When there is a syllable with the constituent vowel i: nérini, nérini‘s ~ nerinys, neriamas daiktas“ (pabuobé's la‘ksta i nérini uZmeti ~ pabobiais lūksto ir nérinj uZmeté, bet: tūrū né'rine dd'r nėmaža' | tuoki Seimi'na apné'rti néjuka ~ turk nérinio ddr nemažai, tokią šeimyną apnérti ne juokai), tésmini (susibrdiZi kdrvi tésmini | nelé'id ne uš papa pajimti~ susibrdizé kovė téSmenj, neléida ne už papo paimti) and so on. The operation of analogy. The alternation of pronounced long and short e in the paradigm of the same word creates (in the speaker’s mind) a certain confusion. Now, when the laws of assimilation no longer have a firm basis in the dialect (the pronunciation of i<i<*in and i<ė, i< *en has become uniform: in all cases, open expanded i, u, intermediate sounds between i and ¢, w and 9 are pronounced; I would say that the dialect is energetically influenced by the literary language and the adjacent Highland dialects), in paradigms e is often uniformized: it is pronounced either short or long in all forms. a) As already mentioned, assimilation has been lost in mot. g. nouns with the suffix -eklė: perė'klu, jaunė'klu, etc. Near the border with the bakers, in the village of Kentraičiai, I heard the sentence: sėseri“ pavidieti griėks ~ sėserie pavydėti griėkas, but here the influence of the bakers is clear (Raudėnų séseréi). 7 Dictionary of the Lithuanian language, vol. 5 (reprinted by K. Ulvydas), Vilnius, 1959, p. 470. 8 pg. K. Būga’s vépelis (see K. Būga, Rinktiniai raštai, vol. 1, Vilnius, 1958, p. 291). 271
in the forms žė'rmu (in the traditional dialect žėrūu), mielė'ūiu (trad. mieléfu), buobė'lu, sé seri (trad. sėseri), as well as in all other forms where e has a basic-ancient accent. b) The opposite is true for masculine nouns: the short e is pronounced where there is no question of regressive assimilation, e.g. : Singular V. mėdis luopšėlis gražesnis K. mė'džel|imėdže luopsé-le||luopséle graZé sne||graZésne N. médiu luopsélu graZesné'm G. médi luopšėli gražesni Int. mėdžū ludpšelū gražesnū Vt. mėdie luopšėlie gražesnėmi Š. sėnil||sėniau vaikel Plural V. meéde (lr. sen.) méde (freq.) And it should be added that this unification is particularly pronounced and frequent in the language of the younger generation. Similarly to the Kuršēni dialect, regressive assimilation is also working in the following dialects of the north-eastern mudmen: in Kurtuvėnai (jė'm kui gerésnis gū'bals ~ jėma „ima“, where gerésnis piece; tuoli mir'su tievi'nė"li biednit siratėlu (d.) = far away our little homeland of poor siratėli), Šaukėnuose (atė'je tūoks vaikėlis = there came such a child; kit tu Ce sėni sieji~k§ you are here, you sow, you sow; Sui.t paslūs pas tū' sėni pažu'rieti | ar tikra jis miri (p.) ~siuita paslūs „pasiuntinius“ pas tą sėnį pamatyti, ar tikrai jis mirė), Vaiguvoje (ši'nd'usma šaltėniu'- se ~ Siendusma šaltėniūse; ai.k bdiltinti medžu ~ go whiten trees; sėnis būva su ii'sta's | su baiza m sénis būva su uostais "moustache", with a beard; mums gerū' įir kulkuozélie ~we are well and in a bullet; stasi' | a nebėg prakaitėlis ~ Stasy, or does not run prakaitėlis) and others.° Having in mind K. Būga’s aiSkinima!®, the association of the short dūnininkų e with the dūnininkų ¢, ¢ or ie, the large area where this assimilation is, it must be assumed that it is a slightly older thing of Žemaičių dialects. It will undoubtedly have occurred before u > 9 and i > € and, most likely, before the prolongation of the pronounced old a, e. Trumpas e in the Kuršėnų and other mudnik dialects could have survived in this way: because ¥ Material taken from the LKLI Language History and Dialectology Sector Cartography. 10 Zr. K. regressive assimilation e was begun to pronounce tightly, narrower (probably the quietest in all the Žemaičių dialects, ta where assimilation is), no longer adapted to e the broad ir was not extended. Then in one of the Dounians dialects he cooked į ę, other į ie ar ¢, o In the mud dialects it remained short, no longer tense, coinciding su with the broad, unaffected e by that assimilation, when the laws of assimilation began to fade in those dialects. Having some tense voice shows ir The vowel "e"? (if he's not a creature of recent times).
