LITHUANIAN SUFFIXAL HYDRONYMS DERIVED FROM OTHER HYDRONYMS
A. VANAGAS
Hydronyms, like other toponyms, distinguish one homogeneous object from another: one lake from another, one river from another, and so on. Therefore, hydronyms can often express not a feature of the object being named, but an entirely accidental feature unrelated to the object distinguished. With this in mind, it can be said that hydronyms (and all toponyms), in general, are less motivated than common nouns. This is one reason why hydronyms (like toponyms in general) do not form as strict a system as appellatives1. According to their degree of motivation, hydronyms can be divided into several groups, ranging from absolutely motivated to absolutely unmotivated. The first type includes, above all, hydronyms derived from completely unchanged names of bodies of water—nomenclatural terms (Ežeras lake Prk., Vilkmedžiai village: ežeras ‘lake’; Upė river Slč., Mūša basin: upė ‘river’; Ūpis river Gdl., tributary of the Rudelė: ūpis ‘river’). Less motivated are hydronyms that are nomenclatural terms for other objects used metaphorically (e.g.: Kamša lake Dgč., river Sv., tributary of the Šventoji: kamša ‘a road through a swamp laid with brushwood and branches’; Mólbedis river Žal., tributary of the Juodupė: mólbedis ‘clay pit’). Hydronyms that arose from completely unchanged personal names or other place names can be considered unmotivated (e.g.: Adomaitis lake Mlt.: Adomaitis personal name; Vytautas river Vyr., tributary of the Šalpalė: Vytautas personal name; Amérika river Pln., tributary of the Minija: Amėrika). Hydronyms that are suffixal derivatives from other hydronyms occupy a distinctive place in this respect. Such hydronyms arose under the influence of the toponymic context. They are not detached or isolated from the names of other bodies of water; rather, they seem to extend already existing hydronyms. Formed from existing hydronyms, they also exist as a continuum of those hydronyms. The link between such hydronyms and their hydronymic (toponymic) context is shown by their shared root (stem), while the relation of belonging is indicated by the suffix-

fix. In this way, entire microsystems of toponyms, so-called “toponymic families,” are sometimes formed, for example:
Compare also: Utenas lake Trgn., Utenà town, Uten-ẏkštis lake Trgn., Uten-aitis lake Ut., Uten-aitė|Uten-ėlė river, flowing out of Lake Utenaitis, Uten-ėlė village in the vicinity of Utena. The derivational relation of such hydronyms (and other toponyms), expressed by a suffix, is not only quantitative but also one of origin and belonging (possessive). Ultimately, this relation of origin and possession in hydronyms is determined by the relationship between the objects themselves. For this reason, with a few exceptions, hydronyms are derived from other hydronyms only with diminutive suffixes. Thus, the derivational relation of such hydronyms reflects the subordination of the objects themselves by belonging (or quantity). They relate to the object being named not directly, but through the hydronymic context. Since the derivational relation exists between two hydronyms, hydronyms derived from other hydronyms can be classed among the more motivated. Hydronyms—suffixal derivatives from other hydronyms—are a distinctive continuation of an existing hydronymic context and are water names that convey certain information (relations of belonging and origin). Their study is important above all for the theory of hydronymy (and toponymy in general). Referring to such types of hydronyms, V. Toporov wrote: “An inventory of such and similar mutually conditioned cases in toponymy may be considered one of the most urgent tasks of the science... of proper names”².
There are relatively few suffixes with which hydronyms are formed from other hydronyms: -aitė, -aitis, -alė, -alis, -elė, -elis, -ėlė, -ėlis, -yčia, -ikė, -ykščia, -ykštis, -ynas, -inė, -(i)nyčia, -okas, -utė, -utis, -ukas, -ukė, -iūkštė, -utė, -utis. Moreover, not all of them are equally productive: some have been used to form several dozen hydronyms, while others have produced only one or two: -ėlė, -elis³: Alksn-ėlė river Lkm., from Lake Alksnaitis: Alksnas lake Lkm.; Alsuod-ėlė river Lkm., from Lake Alsuodis: Alsuodis lake Lkm.; Balt-ėlė river Lkm., from Lake Baltas: Baltas lake Lkm.; Balt-ėlė river Mlt., from Lake Baltis: Baltis lake Mlt.; Bēr-ėlė river Slč., tributary of the Bērė: Bēr-ė river Slč.; Berž-ėlė river Rd., tributary of the Banko canal: Beržė river Rd., tributary of the Šušvė; Blauzd-ėlė river Lel.: Blauzdà river Ktk.; Daub-ėlė river Trg.: Daubà river Trg., tributary of the Jūra; Dysn-ėlė river Dglš., tributary of the Dysna: Dysnà river Dglš.; Dulg-ėlė river Lp., from Lake Dulgas: Dùlgas lake Lp., Dul-

LITHUANIAN HYDRONYMS—SUFFIXAL DERIVATIVES FROM OTHER HYDRONYMS
A. VANAGAS
Abstract
Lithuanian hydronymy contains about 360 suffixal names of rivers and lakes that are derivatives of other water names. In terms of their degree of motivation, they occupy an intermediate position among hydronyms of other structural and derivational types. If hydronyms that arose unchanged from anthroponyms or other toponyms are considered absolutely unmotivated, and hydronyms derived from nomenclature terms for rivers and lakes are considered motivated, then hydronyms that are suffixal derivatives of other hydronyms occupy a position somewhere in the middle of this hierarchy, since they convey some information (a relationship of possession, “kinship,” and so on).
Relatively few suffixes used to form such hydronyms are known. Almost all of them have a diminutive meaning: -elė, -elis (95 hydronyms), -ėlė, -ėlis (77 hydronyms), -aitė, -aitis (71 hydronyms), -ukas, -ukė (55 hydronyms), -alė, -alis (15 hydronyms), -ykščia, -ykštis (15 hydronyms), -ikė (9 hydronyms), -učia (8 hydronyms), -utė, -utis (5 hydronyms), -ytė, -ytis (5 hydronyms), -(i)nyčia (2 hydronyms), -ynas, -inė, -iokas, -iūkštė (one hydronym each).
