Janis Endzelins, Selection of works, I, Riga, 1971, 728 p. Probably it would be very difficult to find a language in the science of which one person played such a huge role as Janis He played in (1873 — 1961) the Latvian national team. For more than half a century this scientist led (in the fullest sense of the word) the Latvian language science, even now, ir po jo after his death, Latvian linguistics, from the country’s point of iš view, still seems to be in the shadow of this famous linguist. This must be the case whenever a great personality retires without leaving equal successors to his work. J. We have been waiting for Endzelynas’s collection of writings for a long time and, of course, we are very happy to finally receive the jų first volume. In this volume published 1897—1906 years J. The studies of the jų Enceladus, including such well-known works as ‘Jlarsmuckue pemejpioru’ (Parts I-II),,,MccnenoBanus B 06JiacTH KauryGeKoro s3bIKa“,,,JIaTeiicKue 3aHMCTBOBAHHS H3 CJaBAHCKHX SB3bIKOB“- ,,,About the Latvian Silbenakzent" ir and many others. The first one is printed ir here J. Endzelyno article, directly related to su Lithuanian studies, namely, V. Požezinskio book,,Bo3spaTHas (dopMa TJIaroJIOB B JIHTOBCKOM H "JiaTHILICKOM S13biKAX" review. J. Endzelynas’ writings are published in ta the language in which they were written, with the phonetic transcription and abbreviations harmonized and with various notes added later by the author himself. Judging by the first volume, the writings of Angelus are iš very carefully prepared. J. It is only a pity that after taking the first volume into our hands, į we somehow miss a broader article about the prominent šį Latvian linguist, his place in the jo Baltic linguistics. True, it is indicated that in the last fourth volume of the — J. Endzelyno "chronicle ir of life's works". However, the chronicle, however ji extensive it may be, will not be able to give a comprehensive assessment of this scientist. Turn it new ir J. Endzelyworno ks, as well as o literature on bibliography, since jį 1958 m. ir 1959 m. published bibliographies there are gaps, literature on o J. Endzelyną has grown considerably over the past few years. J. The editors of the Angelus also make no mention of a substantive index of words. ir As shown by K. The "Collected Writings" (composed by Z. Zinkevičius) practice, such indexes greatly increase the effectiveness of the publication. On this occasion, we would like to remind Latvian linguists of another debt Janiui To the angel: ‘Latvian PSR vietvardi" Volume 2, Part 1 (K— O letters) appeared in the 1961 year, about the third volume so far nothing to hear, too long gap? ar ne Of course, reminding to ir make wishes is much easier than fulfilling them. J. The publication of Endzelins’s collection of writings is the most beautiful tribute to the great Latvian scholar, the best event to mark his centenary. jo J. Endzelyno raštai was ir edited by former jo students R. Gryslė, D. Zemzarė (1911—1971), V. Dambė ir M. Brence, released by Latvia TSR Institute of Language and Literature of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. J. The first volume of Endzelynas’ writings pleads for a broader, comprehensive discussion. These annotated notes were intended to share only the first impressions, the first joys, which arise after browsing through the pages of this highly valuable work of Baltic philology. A.
