LITHUANIAN LANGUAGE STUDIES LITHUANIAN LANGUAGE QUESTIONS, XXVI (1987) I On 12 (25) March 1985, the 100th anniversary of the birth of J. Balčikonis was celebrated in Lithuania. This anniversary was celebrated throughout the republic. Volume XXVI of “Lietuvių kalbotyros klausimai” is also dedicated to her, and on the occasion of its publication it is useful to remind the public once again, at least briefly, of the scientific, literary and pedagogical activities of this famous linguist, through which he has made a significant contribution to Lithuanian studies. Born into a small-scale peasant family, J. Balčikonis spent his childhood in his native village of Ėriškiai (near Ramygala- ). After graduating from the real school in Panevėžys, he decided to study philology. But for this, it was necessary to take a course in classical languages, without which it was impossible to study Indo-European linguistics. After completing his studies in Latin at the St. Petersburg University in 1906, he enrolled in the Slavistics Department of the Faculty of History and Philology of the University of St. Petersburg. A year later, after passing an examination in Ancient Greek, he was accepted as a true listener. The University of St. Petersburg, like the Russian Academy of Sciences, was renowned at the time for both Slavistics and comparative Indo-European linguistics. The Russian MA academics F. Fortunatov, A. Shakhmatov, J. Boduen de Kurtene, S. Bulychi, A. Sobolevsky and other famous linguists worked here. These world-renowned scholars (especially F. Fortunatovs) knew the Lithuanian language, studied and compared it with other Indo-European languages. (especially Baltic and Slavic) languages. The famous Lithuanian linguist K. Būga, who had entered the Slavistics Department a year earlier than J. Balčikonis, was also studying at the Faculty of History and Philology of the University of St. Petersburg at the time. The creative environment of St. Petersburg University and the other advanced Russian scientists already mentioned had a great influence on ir the formation of J. Balčikonis’ scientific and social views. In 1911 he graduated from the university and until 1915 worked in Lithuania mainly as a teacher (he taught Latin and Lithuanian in the secondary school there, and in the teacher training courses there). In 1915, due to the war, he was evacuated to Voronezh, where he taught Lithuanian and Latin in refugee boys' and girls' gymnasiums and in the Teachers' Institute until 1918. At the same time in Voronezh did pedagogical work the famous Lithuanian literary language creator J. Jablonskis, mathematician Z. Žemaitis and other Lithuanian intelligentsia, with whom J. Balčikonis was linked by sincere friendship. He remembered our famous linguist J. Jablonski, whom he regarded as his teacher, with great love and respect all his life. In general, it should be recalled that the few Lithuanian linguists of that time were linked by the sincerest friendship. For example, J. Balčikonis remembered our famous linguist, his somewhat older colleague, K. Bugas, with a smile. 4
That friendship of linguists strengthened them už in the struggle for ir Lithuanian language rights Culture «in the conditions of czarist oppression. Back 1918 m. į Lithuania, J. Balčikonis settled He served as a teacher for several years (at first in a gymnasium, then in a ir teacher's seminary). ir 1924 m. was elected University of Kaunas He began teaching the general Lithuanian ir language course to students as a lecturer at the Faculty of Humanities. Po K. "Death of Mr. (1924 Buggy". jo started large The work on the Lithuanian language dictionary was completely stopped. K. In six years, a thick layer of dust had already covered the library and manuscripts left by Bogga. Ir unknown how much more started work jo would have stood unmoved if ne J. Balčikonis- 's efforts to jį continue iš further, all, if at the time there had not been such a man as J. Balčikonis. Repeatedly energetically appealing to the į to bourgeois government ir of the society of the time, he argued that the Estonian people needed a living dictionary, that it was necessary to continue K. The work started. "That job required a well-prepared, dedicated ir man. Ir Here it is. 1930 m. at the end of J. Balchikoni was tasked with iš reorganizing The Lithuanian language dictionary. The thorough K. Study of the lexicographic heritage of Bogdanova. Iš once it turned out that K.. Bugs left vocabulary records, although quite large ji (weighs about 100 grams) 17 617 553), still far from sufficient for the large Lithuanian language dictionary. It was iš necessary to reorganize the collection of iš words from both the spoken language and folklore, as well as from iš literature of various ir genres of different eras. This organizational work was heavily undertaken by J. Balčikonis. Together he studied K. The legacy of Boiga otherwise ir lexicographic literature, especially Zodynus. Tų dictionaries in general ir lexicographic literature studies helped J. Balčikoniui to form the future dictionary typeWell, because it turned out that K. The type of dictionary that Boge began to publish would not be sustained under the conditions of that time and ir would need to jį be changed. The change in the type of the dictionary was probably mainly due to the fact to that the continuation of the work was a linguist of ir different inclinations and different preparation than the originator himself K. Booga. Mat main K. The field of his research was mainly historical comparative Baltic studies and Indo-European studies. o J. Balčikonis was primarily a Lithuanianist practitioner, working mainly in the field of Lithuanian language standardization. So ir J. Balčikonis- ’s chosen type of dictionary is more reminiscent of the aforementioned Polish, Russian or iš partly even ir Latvian dictionaries than of the K.. The Beginning of a Dictionary. Having formulated the type of future ir dictionary and enriched the library itself, J. Balčikonis, initially a full-time secretary of the dictionary N. Grigo, later o with the ir help of non-statal collaborators, mostly student Lithuanians, began to write Dictionary of the English Language. Į the writing of the text were ir involved collaborators. That dictionary, “far removed from K. By following the path of the Boge ir dictionary without repeating the path of any ar other dictionary of Lithuanian or any other language, it turned out to be a completely unique, original, simply unique work, such as has not yet existed in the entire history of Lithuanian studies. * The following dictionaries are mentioned: Stownik języka polskiego//Utożony pod redakcjąJana Kartowicza, Adama Krynskiego i Wladyslawa Niedzwiedzki. — Warsaw, Poland 1900—1927, t. 1—8; Dictionary of Polish Dialects /Select Jan Karlowicz. — Kraków, 1900-1911, t. 1-6; Miilenbachs K. Maximum J. The merit of Balchikoni here is that he did not let fade K. For the lexicographical legacy of Bogdan Bogdanov, using that legacy, he created a new, original unique type of dictionary, wrote a significant part ir of the text of the first volumes of the Lithuanian language dictionary, as chief editor edited all three first volumes according to the original instruction part of the fourth volume of the Lithuanian language dictionary. ir (up to the word of), all his life supported Zodyn, organizing word collection helpers by himself collecting words ir from living language writings. Editing iš of the Lithuanian Language ir Dictionary, training of dictionarist cadres J. Balčikonis appointed more than a 20 year. By the time the first volume of this dictionary was published, the library itself had grown to a million pages. Į ją entered particularly many words sentences ir of popular iš spoken language, often iš tų places, of iš which previous į linguistic works had not entered a single nė word, a single nė sentence. Until his retirement, 1959 m. į Balčikonis was J. the most zealous organizer of word-collection at Vilnius University. Jo encouragir ed to teach students Lithuanians every year po collected a considerable fiber of iš words for the dictionary various The corners of Lithuania. Toji J. Balčikonis’s tradition of collecting words is alive at the University today: for ir many years University lecturers Lithuanianists A.. Pupkis, B. Stundžia, O. Kuosienė, R. Venckutė, economist V. Mačiekus ir others, leading the students' production practice or otherwise participating in expeditions and trips, together with students su (or alone) collect words. su sentenciš es of living folk language. J. Balčikonis’ contributions to Lithuanian lexicography are even more evident when one considers that, when the first volumes of the dictionary were written, there were no qualified lexicographers in Lithuania. He almost alone organized the word gathering task force, formed the type of dictionary and ir compiled at least a provisional editing instruction. Due to the lack of qualified collaborators, the first steps were particularly difficult; the work of the dictionary required great iš dedication of the editor-in-chief. In the course of several years, a small but very compact creative ir group of young lexicographers ir (without the editor of the Dictionary) N. Grigo, here it is especially necessary to mention such helpers as J. Mikeliūnas, Z. Uoselis, A. Lyberis, Vosylius, K. Mikalauskaitė E. ir J. Senkus. It is only a pity that due to the harsh conditions of the ir wartime German fascist occupation, this group of collaborators was very thin). Other very important J. Balčikonis' favourite field of scientific activity has been onomastics, especially toponymics. Iš in this field he has published an interesting study on He has written articles on the origin of individual iš place names and the original authentic form. The interpretation, clarification and reconstruction of literary forms of pronouns requires great care jų and devotion. ir Tą work J. Balčikonis worked, you could say, his whole life. He often visited some ne place of residence į himself, simply checked the pronunciation of the place ir name of his iš interest from people's mouths, reconstructed the literary form. Using the direct observation survey method, he has thoroughly ar examined the majority of Lithuanian The name of the village is derived from the literary form of the ir name. tų Here it is necessary to ir mention the fact that even before the war mainly J. Balčikonis efforts with care ir was made of all Dictionary of Lithuanian place names, arranged according to the names of the 6
administrative-territorial units of the time. to "The forms of the dictionary's placenames were mostly checked, normalised ir and spelled by J. Balčikonis. Jo significantly contributed to ir other pre-war onomastics works: the standardization of non-residential place names, especially river names. Tag work J. Balčikonis worked, editing writings of great significance for the ‘me to the history of Lithuanian language, as well as Lithuanian language culture. First of all, here mentioned 1598 m. M. The Catechism of Petkevičius (‘Polski z Litewskim Catechism... Malchera Pietkiewicza”, V., which 1598), J. Balčikonis issued a facsimile Kaune 1939 m. Be of this, he has edited D. Klein's first Lithuanian grammar (Grammar Litvanica... a M. Daniele Klein", 1653) Latin iš translation. This translation together su D. Klein's abbreviated German-Lithuanian grammar (M. Danielis Kleinii ,,Compendium Litvanico-Germanicum.. .““, Kėnigsberg, Lithuanian 1654) translation with full ir facsimile texts of the originals was published as a separate book (The First Grammar of the Lithuanian Language, V., 1957). J. Balčikonis editing particularly improved D. The Lithuanian translation of Klein's grammar. Balčikonis himself, being a great J. stylist, greatly appreciated those writers iš who They can be taught clear, lively, folk language, good style. One such writer, no doubt, is be M. Valančius. To make M. Valančiaus writings available to the broader readership, Balčikonis J. collected them and published ir them (The "Valančiaus raštai", K., 1931), thereby greatly serving the school, the Lithuanian language culture. Both for the history of Lithuanian literary language and Lithuanian language culture, Significant are: J. Jablonski- 's writings, which until 1932 m. were thrown in various newspapers, magazines, other publications, some of o which have been published as separate books. ar Most of them jų were completely unavailable to readers. Collecting and ir editing all the most important for readers usually no longer accessible hard to access ar J. Balčikonis published J. Jablonskis’ writings in five volumes®. To job posting was uncovered The Lithuanian literary language is a huge showcase for Lithuanian society. Would be very incomplete J. Balčikonis' literary activity, without mentioning jo his excellent translations. Kas gi iš really has not read admiring ir Lithuanian jo į translated Andersen'- s, Hoof's, Brothers' Make-up, Per fairy tales of ir Julius Verno, J. Swift's works. Some translattų ions have gone out ne po one permit. Iš tų The translation community su became į acquainted with the best examples of world kų literature. J. Balčikonis’s tales are truly extraordinary. Iš jų clearly showing only ne the translator's perfect command of the Lithuanian language, but ir a great literary education ability. ir Tų The language of fairy tale translations is ne distinguished only by regularity, ir but by extraordinary clarity, vividness, ir visuality and folkness. J. Balchik ir jo pupils (a part of the fairy tales were translated su by his pupils) fairy tale translations — are examples of perfect Lithuanian literary language, as well as perfect Lithuanian fictional literature works, which are practically learned by iš whole generations of people. In that way, with his excellent translations of fairy tales J. Balčikonis has effectively contributed to * The Writings of Jablonski / Red. J. Balčikonis. — K., 1932—1936, t. 1—5.
raising the culture of the entire Lithuanian literary language, to the normalization of literary language. With these translations, he brought a lot of į liveliness, natural simplicity and the fresh air of the Lithuanian ir countryside ką into the Lithuanian literary su language. Tų The vividness, imagery, simplicity and folkness of the ir language of be the fairy tale translations ir will undoubtedly be determined by the influence of the translator’s native dialect. Knowing well the native dialect of Ėriškiai and maintaining contact with it throughout his life, Balčikonis was able to make su ja very creative use J. of its vocabulary and phraseological grammar, both in translating tales and correcting various language irregularities, and ir in improving the Lithuanian literary language. iš ir That the folk spoken language ba iš indeed is a living inexhaustible ir source of education for the enrichment ir of literary language, perfectly illustrates J. Translations of Balčikonio fairy tales, all activities of jo language culture ir normalization. Must be mentioned here ir du last large J. Balčikonis works: J. Otrembski’s third work “Gramatyka języka litewskiego” (Warszawa, translation into 1956—1958, t. 1—3) Lithuanian į ir "Songs of the Druskininkaitų ". Only the first part of the manuscript remains. Iš in fact it's an extraordinary translation. Especially to excellent translation language. This is, one could say, just an example of Lithuanian scientific language. Be therefore, the translator ne has only corrected ką and supplemented a lot, ir but managed to ir submit the translation to prof. J. Otrembski's authorization. This means that the quality of the translation exceeds that of the original. Published in some way of multiplication that translation would be very useful to all Lithuanian (and otherwise Lithuanian-speaking) philologists as a valuable source of Lithuanian studies, The second work mentioned here, po J. Balčikonis's death (he died in) 1969 — "Songs of the Druskininkai" (V., 1972), jo recorded iš Mizarų village singers J. Jurkonienės. This is a great scientific collection of Lithuanian folk songs, which has great lę significance for both folklore and linguistics. This folk collection is like the swan song of our famous linguist, which makes it even more sounding B. Uginčius recorded ir į the melodies of the songs inserted in the text of the collection, as well as L. Introductory Introduction. article, P. Jokimaitienė- 's index etc. ir J. Balčikonis had to learn to work for some time when the ir Lithuanian literary language was not yet consolidated, when its norms were still very fluctuating, when the teaching of that language was, it can be said, only taking the first, unstable Steps. Therefore, it goes without saying that jo the greatest respect is given to the spoken language of the people, which is really very useful when the norms of literary language have to be created before there are enough good writings. In this case, the popular spoken language is often the only reliable criterion for checking the norms of literary language. After all, this criterion was used by all the famous writers who created the Lithuanian literary language. — M. Daukša, K.. Sirvydas, K. Donelaitis, S. Daukantas, M. Valančius, Žemaitė, Vaižgantas ir and many others, as well as linguists — D. Kleinas, K. Jaunius, J. Jablonskis, K. Būga, doctor P. Avižonis, forester P. Matulionis ir et al. To The observance of the criterion has had a great significance for the consolidation of Lithuanian literary language norms, for the development of literary language as a whole. It goes without saying that at the moment, when the norms of Lithuanian literary language have been strengthened, when there is a great increase in both fictional and scientific literature, to rely solely on the 8
popular spoken language, as a criterion of norms, is no longer possible. It is necessary to take into account the facts of the growing literary language, to look at its development tendencies. However, even today, the spoken language of the people has not ceased to be of great importance as an irreplaceable source of enrichment of the literary language, from which we can still draw the facts of vocabulary, phraseology and syntax necessary for the development of the literary language. J. Balčikonis’s versatile pedagogical activity could only be more thoroughly explained by devoting a special study or at least a special article to this purpose. Here we can only raise him as a sincere and dedicated educator of young cadres. Almost 50 years of pedagogical work J. Balčikonis has developed a large group of Lithuanian language teachers. Jo former students can be found in all corners of Lithuania, in many different types of schools. Especially became various ir significant J. Balčikonis pedagogical activity, after establishing at Vilnius State University ir Lietuvos TSR Scientific Academies The Lithuanian Language and ir Literature Institute. Professorship until 1959 m. University (the professor's name was recognized immediately po Great Patriotic War), together until 1952 m. While holding the responsible position of director of the Lithuanian Language Institute (in 1946 he was elected an academician of the Lithuanian SSR Academy of Sciences), Balčikonis J. began to lead aspirant Lithuanianists. To work he did not interrupt all his life. Many of the jo former aspirants have defended only candidate but ne doctoral theses and are working as ir professors at higher ir education institutions of ar the republic, as well as as research associates at the Institute of Lithuanian Language and Literature. Teaching the general course of contemporary Lithuanian literary language at the University, Balčikonis used a whole complex of various teaching ir factors: theoretical J. lectures, written works, correction, translations from other languages, writing sentences of words in the native dialect, talks on theoretical jų practical language iš issues, trips to the places of residence of ir the dialect representativiš es. ir į All this formed a whole system of mother tongue teaching, which can be boldly called J. Balčikonis created a Lithuanian language teaching school. Ji is absolutely similar į tą Lithuanian language teaching school, which was founded by the famous Lithuanian literary language educator J. Jablonski. It is understood that J. The Lithuanian language school created by Jablonski had a great jo influence on the most diligent student J. Balchikoni, who only took over ne it, but still diversified it. ir Like the best zealots ir J. The pupils of su Jablonski speak with the greatest respect jo about the Lithuanian language teaching school, which they have had to leave, as well as J. Balčikonio students are proud ir to have graduated jo from the Lithuanian language school. J. Balčikonis, being demanding ir to himself and to his students, ir was always simple, accessible, helpful and sincere. ir He knew how to inspire his students the love of their mother tongue and ir the determination to devote themselves to its study. Jį loved and ir admired by all who came closer to su him. He has not responded to any of his valuable consultations on the issues of language theory and practice. ir He considered a good command of his mother tongue and devotion to its studies a sacred duty of every Lithuanianist, simply a necessity. Loving his native language, he tried to ir instill love and 9
respect for it in every student, already advising first-year students to give up all entertainment and pleasures (excursions, trips, dancing, entertainment) for all the time needed to master well the subjects of accentology, phonetics, grammar and stylistics. The Communist Party and the Soviet government greatly appreciated J. Balčikonis’ scientific and pedagogical activities and his contributions to Lithuanian linguistics and culture. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, he was awarded the The name of the SSR Meritorious Scientific Actor. The first secondary school in Panevėžys was named after him, a monument was erected on his grave in Ėriškiai, a memorial plaque was attached to the house in which he lived, and the collection Rinktiniai rastai® was published. J. Balčikonis’ Lithuanianist works are a significant contribution to Lithuanian linguistics. He grew up with Lithuania and its people in all his activities. And now, more than a century after his birth and seventeen years after his death, his influence on Lithuanian lexicography, the history of the Lithuanian language, onomastics, folklore, the whole culture of the Lithuanian language, which we understand not only as the existence of grammar, dictionaries, good Lithuanian language textbooks, periodicals on language culture and many practical language books, articles, not only as the beautiful language of radio and television presenters, as well as theatre actors, but also as a rich, vivid, widely established both in public life, science, literature, and in every Lithuanian family written and spoken language, is extremely pronounced. Language culture can flourish where people love their mother tongue. All his life J. Balčikonis instilled in us a love for our language, the most precious legacy of our fathers, the greatest cultural value of the nation. The Lithuanian nation, and especially its future — the Soviet young generation, increasingly encompassed by universal science, will build a truly indestructible monument to J. Balčikonis, stronger than any granite, by loving, respecting, cherishing and nurturing the language inherited with mother’s milk and blood.
