ACTA LINGUISTICA LITHUANICA XLV (2001), 113 - 121 1674 mety The article deals with the lexical divergences between the seven last gospel texts in the 1647 edition of Jaknavičius' Ewangelie polskie y litewskie and the parts attributed to Jaknavičius himself. Attention is paid to the way in which the editor of the 1674 version of this work adapted the vocabulary of these gospel texts to that of the basic part of the work. He discarded rare words that are not attested in Jaknavičius’ text (gentis, kuris gi vienas, mala, nuopelnas) and replaced them with items [frequently used by Jaknavičius (giminė, kiekvienas), or, if such were lacking, with words from his own native dialect (kandzia, uzmokesnis). He also brought more uniformity in the use of the conJunction net. These lexical features show that the editor of the 1674 version took great pains to bring the text of the gospels in conformity with the Eastern Lithuanian standard of his time. The divergences between the 1647 and the 1674 version are not determined by the Polish text, which is identical in both editions. IVADAS In 1647 Janas Jaknavi¢ius's Ewangelie polskie y litewskie was published in Vilnius. The authorship of the translation has been subject to doubt and debate. However, Vaclovas Biržiška (1939: 49-82) presented arguments that justifiably prove that these texts were translated into Lithuanian by Jaknavičius. Zigmas Zinkevičius (1971: 154) pointed out that the last seven Gospels (JE,, 201-211) had been edited or heavily edited by another person, and pointed out the characteristics of language and spelling of this unknown editor. Additionally, the analysis of the JE, text highlighted the differences in the lexicon of Jaknavičius' text and those seven last gospels" — the genus of lexicon not characteristic of Jaknavičius' text, which is one, mala, merit, different even in the use of the conjunction. Thus, the 1647 translation of the Gospels is the work of several people, and it is necessary to analyze not one, but two linguistic systems. It should be mentioned that the text of JE,, is full of lexical similarities, but in the part of the text not attributed to Jaknavičius there are no such similarities at all. In the 1674 edition of Ewangelie polskie y litewskie they are already completely abandoned (150 such cases have been noted). 114 | MILDA LUČINSKIENĖ The next edition of these Gospels appeared 27 years later, in 1674. Compared to JE. and JE, texts*, it turned out that JE, text is quite edited. About the editing of orientalities and their replacement with more widely used lexical elements JE,, Jaknavičius’ text has already been written (Lučinskienė 2001: 117-128). The editor tried to unify the text of the Gospels in terms of language. Another principle of his editing was the reduction of the lexical differences between the last seven Gospels and the Gospels translated by Jaknavičius. In this article, we will review these fixes. The differences are discussed with regard to the original language and by comparison with other 16th-17th century Lithuanian writings. ANALYSIS OF CORRECTIONS 1. genus —genus: JE, A bulite //išduoti nuog gimdi=/|toiu | i brolu | i /| nuog ginčiu 205,, „(A bgdjieczye wydany //od rodzicow y bra =/|czyey | y krewnych 205,—-206,) —JE,, Abulite išdo=//ti nuog gimditoiu i //brolu /ir nuog gimeni 212,, (212 3 9-11 316) The noun gentis with the meaning “relative, person of the same family (tribe), relative (by birth and by marriage)” is often used in ancient writings and dialects. According to LKŽ, 238 data, this word is used in Kėdainiai Gospels of 1653, Daukša Postila, Mažvydas writings, Vaišnoras Žemčiuga Theological, Bretkūnas Postila and Bible, Chylinski Bible. *SD 130, 378 we also find the form defendis next to the synonym gintilte, whose Polish equivalents are krewnos¢ and rodžina. The word giminė *SD is more common (13x) than gentis (2x) and has the following Polish equivalents: ndrod (195), pokolenie (318), rod (377), plemię (299). The lexicon gentis with the meaning “relative” is mainly used in the Žemaičių and Western Upland dialects (LKZ,, 19, 238). The semantic field of the Zodziy tribe and the Zodziy kinship in ancient writings was wider than today and was based on the polysemantic use of individual Polish words of that time; The word tribe was used to refer to a group of closely connected people (Karaciejus 1980: 103-104). However, it is important to note that the word tribe JE is used only once and in the part of the Gospels that is attributed to another translator. JE,, this word no longer exists — it has been replaced by the editor — the entire text is used the lexem genus. Noun giminė JE, used 14 times, giminėti ‘relatives, close' two 2 Comparative analysis of the Gospels was carried out on the basis of computerized concordances of word forms in Ewangelie polskie y litewskie (1647 and 1674). They were prepared by the Lithuanian Language Institute employees Milda Lučinskienė and Vytautas Zinkevičius (programmer), under the direction of Saulius Ambraz, with the funding of the State Lithuanian Language Commission at the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania under the “Program of the State Language of the Republic of Lithuania for Use and Education 1996-2005- ”. The computerized concordances of word forms of Bretkūnas Postilas (BP, „), Sirvydas Punktų sakymai (PS), Vilentas Enchiridion (VLNE) and Evangelies and Epistles (VINEE) as well as computerized versions of the Catechism of Belarman and the Catechism of 1605 were also used. 3 Here and hereafter the position of the JE,, Polish equivalents is indicated in parentheses, and the equivalents themselves are not repeated, since they differ from JE only in spelling. 1674 EDITION OF THE EVANGELIES | 115 times and once —singular feminine noun form giminéta: JE, 164,, A šitay El=//5bieta //gimineta td=//wo. The 310 is recorded only from the Sirvydas Dictionary, Points Sayings and Chylinski- 's Bible. Vedynė giminė with the meaning “who is related to whom, tribe”, LKZ, 309 data, spread in many dialects: mostly written in the eastern Altay paneveziskiy dialect area, less often — in the western Altay (Kaunas, Šiauliai), eastern Altay (Utena, Vilnius), southern and northern Žemaičių dialect area and in the transitional dialect between western and eastern Altay. In addition to this meaning, JE, and in later editions, the lexical genus is used with other meanings. The following meanings are mentioned: “origin’, ‘nation’, ‘generation’ (LKZ, 309). They are illustrated by the following examples: JE, 9,, todrin iog buwo ij //namu i gimines //Dowido JE, 86,, mokicie //wilas gimines /kri+//kftidami ias JE, 137,, bitau iumus /iog //ne praeys gimine //toi | pokotay willa //tay [tolis JE, vediniu giminė transl. ndrod (9x), less frequently pokolenie (4x) and wiek (1x IU, 2.22). JE, the conjunction used in the text (3x) is in all cases the equivalent of the Polish word krewny (JE, 20,, 164,, 173,). Thus, the rarer word genus JE, "replacement by a more general and more common derivative genus does not depend on the Polish original. It is simply the result of the standardisation of this text. 2. which one —each one (2x): JE, i //kurilgi wienas który //giwena i tylko ing //mani nenu=//mirs am=//znai 211,, (A wiel=//ki ktory 3ywie ad wie=/[r5y w mig | nie vmr3e //nd wieki 211,. „) —JE, i ile=//wienas który giwena //i tylko ing mani nenu=//mirs amjinai 218, (218,) JE, i tutaj odda ku-//riamgi wienam pa-//lig pracy io 204,,„(a te //dy odda kajdemu we //dtug vezynkow iego 204, |.) —JE,, i tutaj ata=//duos ile wienam pd-//lig pracy io The pronoun which one is used only in the JE part attributed to the anonymous editor or translator. In Jaknavičius’ translated text, only the indefinite generalizing pronoun kiekvienas (20x) is used. The pronoun which is used twice (JE, 211,,,204,, „) and already JE,, is edited and replaced by the corrector with an indefinite pronoun each. The demonstrative 210,, 35 (2105, 4,) pronoun which is one* in the meaning “each” is used only once in Sirvydo PS, 86 (Lithuanian: kuris giwienas, Polish: kajdy) and is not confirmed either in Lithuanian dialects or in other ancient writings LKZ, “952. It should also be mentioned that the pronoun kiekvienas has a looser and wider distribution than the pronouns kas, katras, kuris (positional variants) and is therefore considered the main variant (Rosinas 1988: 124). 4 In the Lithuanian language dictionary the pronouns kuris vienas (LKŽ,, 952) and kiekvienas (LKŽ,, 747) are described as designative pronouns, in the latest Lithuanian grammar (Ambrazas, ed., 1997: 257) the pronoun kiekvienas is assigned to the meaning group of indefinite generalizing positive pronouns, and Alberto Rosino (1996: 123) —to the pronouns of the common class. Page 116 | 117 3. side — bite (2x): If,, No || get rid of them y3du //this year | where rounds and //malos ruin 209,,, (Nie lkarbcie //fobie [kdrbow na jie=//mi: gd3ie rdzd y mol //pluie /209,,) — 216,, JE,, Neijdinkite iu=//mus y3du jiamei | kur //rudis ir kand3ies gd =//dina 216,, JE, A kraukite //y3dus iumus dūgui /|| (216, kur nei ruudis /nei //malos gadina 209,,. The word mala in the meaning of ‘bite’ is not recorded in other ancient texts. The word kandis form kandZia is known only in the eastern Altay dialect (Dusetos and Giedraičiai) (LKZ, 206). The word is rare in the old writings — it is given only in SPR 83 and once used in PS 7,, “But Sirvydo Si lexem is written in Eastern —kundžia. Thus, JE,, the editor rejects the explicit loanword, replacing it with the familiar eastern lexem kandžia, but with a healthy an-type folk-language compound. 4. merit —more rewarding: JE, V3-//tielu fakaw iumus | //eme nuopetnu fa-//wo 208,, „(34-//prawdę powiadam || wam | iš wjigli 3a-//ptatę Iwoig 208, „) —JE,, Vitielu fakau iu=//mus /eme zamokielni // fawo 215, 5 (215,,,,) The derivative merit JE in the meaning of,,,repayment', which was recorded in LKZ 946 only yesterday in the KauniSkiy parish (Jurbarkas) of the Altay people, is used in this Eastern text only once (1x), and its base verb nupelnyti — five times. The Vedic is not paid in JE, nor in other 16th-17th century writings. LRZ on 664 derived from the earlier dialects of Lesser Lithuania and a large area of the Žemaičių dialect, it is still used by the eastern Altai people of Panevėžys. LKA (142-143, map no. 127) shows that the suffix -esnis is used mainly by the Žemaičiai and a small part of the Highlanders of the Klaipėda region, but examples with this suffix have been recorded far from the mentioned places — most often in the dialects of the eastern Highlanders (Panevežio, Širvintų, Utenos), less often in the dialects of the western Highlanders of Panevėžys. LKŽ., 314 indicates that the form mokesnis is common in the Žemaičių dialekto area, and the Altaičių — only in the Uteniškių dialect. JE, (and other later editions) remuneration for work is usually referred to by the word salary (JE, 33,), and salary can also have the meaning of'merit, reward, moral, spiritual reward' (JE, 198,,, 207,,), e.g. : JE,,207,—208, nes ftay atga iuf-||fu gauli ira dungui. In all the cases mentioned here, the Gospels have a Polish equivalent japtata (JE, 33,, 198, 208.). *SD (526) only. zdptata is translated as ajumokeltis | salary, and the word nupetnas is the equivalent of Polish wyftuga (SD 505- 1674 EDITION OF THE EVANGELIES | 117 506)°. Thus, it is likely that the lexicon uZmokesnis is a reflection of JE, the editor's dialect. 5. angel —aniolas: JE, Net funus //3mogaus tuur atait || garboi Tewo lawo //fu Angetais fawais 204, | (Abowiem pr3yidsie || [yn c3towiec3y w //chwale oycd Iwego 3 //Anyoly Iwoimi 204,) —JE, Nes lunus 3mogaus || tur dtait garboy Te= //wo lawo lu Anyotais //fawo 210,, (210,,,) JE, in the text the form angel is used 14x (1x —in the text of the anonymous translator), anielas —4x, aniolas —1x. Thus, the Gospels of 1647 are dominated by the form angel. Similar situation remains in the 1674 edition — the form angelas is written 12x, anielas — 5x, aniolas — 3x. JE,, editor changed the twice older form angelas to the newer variant aniolas: in Jaknavičius’ text (JE, 179,) and in the text of another translator or editor. The most consistent use of the form angelas is found in the writings of the Duchy of Prussia: BP (288x), Mz (43x) (Urbas 1996: 19), VINEE (35x), VLNE (2x). The forms aniol (Mz 2x) and aniel (BP 1x) are very rarely used here. This was the first time in the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania that two different languages were used in the same state. In the works of the authors who wrote in the Eastern variant of the scripture language, the form anielas is used most often — PS (55x), BK (17x), and angel is used much less often — K1605 (9x) and PS (3x only in the text of the passages), and the form aniolas is used only in the Catechism of Bellarmine (1x). In the texts of Daukša, who wrote in the middle variant of the script language, the form angelas (344x) and only (4x) rarely anielas (Kudzinowski 1977: 19) dominated, but in other Middle Eastern scripts the use of these lexicons varies —only the form anielas (179x) is written in Chylinski- ’s New Testament (Kudzinowski 1964: 3), while in PK and SE texts all three variants are used —the oldest form angelas is written rarely (PK 3x; SE 1x), the newer variant anielas is more often written in SE (30x) and PK (11x), aniolas —SE (10x) and PK (8x) (Jakulis 1995: 8; Kruopas 1970: 85), it is also known in dialects —east Highland (rarely —south Highland and northern Zemgale) LKŽ, 141. Although Jaknavičius’ Gospels of 1647 and 1674 contain all three variants, as already mentioned, the most common older form is angel (as in Vilento, Bretkūno, Mažvydo, Daukšos). The motives of the editor for choosing the form aniol are not clear: the choice could have been influenced by his own dialect or by some printed publication that used the form aniol. 6. net — since: JE, Even who //i5g iullu noredamas //i3ltatit we3iu | ne //pirmiaus lededamas //fufkaito indeimus 202,, (Abo-//wiem kto 3 was //chcqc budowac wie-//3¢ /nie pierwey Siad=//fy rachuie 3 That in the Polish Gospel text the word japlata (JE, 208,, „) has the meaning of reward rather than wages, is also evidenced by the fact that in the present New Testament Polish this word has already been replaced by the lexicon nagroda (MT 6,16) (PALL 1130). 118–120) and Lucius Licinius Crassus (c. —JE,, Nes //kas i3g iufu noreda+/- /mas i3ltatit wejiu /ne //pirmiaus lededamas || lulkaito indeimus 208,. As can be seen from the examples, the form even changed to ines (even JE, because 7 E,) only ax. "The word even JE, in the text performs several different functions: (a) (1x) used as a reinforcement particle (JE, 94 (JE,, 100,); (b) (5x) connects the subordinate sentences of the time circumstance" and performs the function of a limit switch (1x); used the compound conjunction even before (JE,,157,; JE,,162,,; let. a3by pierwey JE, 137. JE, 165) 1 and even (1x) with the adjacent variant pokoley (JE, 31; even JE 34, len. and JE, ‘31,; JE, 34,); (c) (4x) performs WE, switch because function JE, 202; JE, 204; JE 204; JE, 209,,—examples given above). In the latter case (c) JE, the word even is replaced by JE,, because, 0 the first two even functions remain and JE,,. Such use of the word and even the conjunction because is attested in many old writings: Daukša Postilė, Sirvydas Punktai Sakymų, Mažvydas, Simonas Vaišnoras writings (Zinkevičius 1981: 198; LKŽ,,, 738) and Chylinskis NT, Bretkūnas Postilė, Wilento Evangelijos and Epistolas (Drotvinas 1968: 95). Drotvinas pointed out that in the old Lithuanian writings even (as well as even pirm, pirm neg) is used instead of nes due to the influence of the original language (e.g., when translating from Polish až) (Drotvinas 1968: 95). The equivalents of JE, and JE,, for the Polish word aj are: (a) the time-limiting conjunction even connecting secondary time sentences with the meaning “until” (4x:.JTE,,- 2,„JE,„,2,- ,JE,19.,, JE, 19,,; JE,, 149 JE, 149), e.g. : 19? 74:*722? 10* 15? ; It's just. 100; 43 JE,‘94,, 13° 74 JE, 2,,, iog ne prafoks to //gimine /net wila tai //ifipildis (JE, 2,,,,3ec nie prjeminie ten //to wiek | a} [ig wfiy-//tko 3is¢i) 6 In the additionally added passage (JE., 166-167) (1x) the word nes is used. p p ft. 74 Pp i Leonardas Drotvinas (1968: 95) indicates that the temporal relationship of actions, when the action of the main sentence takes place before the action of the secondary sentence, can be expressed in the old writings by a boundary conjunction even by a compound conjunction even before. 1674 EDITING OF THE EVANGELIES | 119 In one case JE, there are two variants even pokoley®, JE, left only even: JE,,30,,-31, Added i=//ra karalilte dun-//gaus rukfti | ku=//riu iemus žmona //paltepe azurawgie || trife mirole mittu /net pokoley furugo //wila —JE. 33, -34, Pri=//ligintd ira Karalilte || dungaus rukfityi | ku=//riu iemus žmona [| ajuraugie trifle mie=//role miltu /net luru=//go wila (JE, 30,31, Podo=//bne ielt kroleltwo //niebielkie | golo-//wi | ktory w3iawhy //niewidlta 3akryta || we tr3y midry mg-//ki | aš wfiytka lkwa=//$- nidla); _ (b) a compound time-limiting conjunction connecting sub-time sentences even before (1x). In this case, the Polish conjunction is ajby JE,,157, (JE,,162,,); (c) the conjunction net with the meaning ‘when’ (1x): JE, 94,.(JE,, 100, „) Ir ataio ir prideio //abi eldii teip net //grim3do (JE, 94,,,Y pr3y-// byli | a napetnili o-//bie todji | až lig 3anu+//raty) Vincas Urbutis (1966: 105) also refers to the latter net meaning. JE, the same word even, but already performing the function of cause, also translates the distinctive Polish conjunctions abowiem (3x) and bo (1x). It is the latter even use of the word JE,, that is edited and consistently replaced by the conjunction nes, with which the above mentioned Polish conjunctions abowiem and bo are most often translated. According to JE, the concordance found that the cause conjunction ponieważ used in the text (88x) corresponds to the almost equally distributed two Polish conjunctions abowiem (albowiė) (46x) and bo (variants boc) (37x), the following corresponding words are found once more —jas (JE, 36,,), dle (JE,„57,.,), iz (JE,„„36,,- 97,,). This distribution of the conjunctiony indicates that the translation of the Polish conjunction abowiem and bo with the conjunction even was not typical of JE, except for those 4 cases which are attributed to the pen of another translator. *SD, as a normative work of that time, reflects the following usage of these conjunctions: len. abowiem (SD 1) is translated by the conjunction nes, nefung, nella, also because is translated by the conjunction bo (*SD 19), and the conjunction aj is assigned even several functions: in terms of time* the conjunction aj is translated by the time limit conjunctions kofay /pakotay | net (SD 4), and in terms of place by the conjunction len. The use of aj is illustrated by the example Iki kaktu. This is exactly the way these words are used in JE, and JE... Since JE,, appeared 27 years after the first edition of the Gospels, we can assume that even such use in the meaning ‘because’ (the Polish equivalents abowiem and bo) was perceived by the author and corrector as archaic or at least not typical of the language of that time. B LEZ... 737 is even described as a particle and a switch. To the examples, illustrating the particle even use, is given precisely this example. However, it should be taken into account that JE, the word pokoley (JE, 31,) is written in italics, which was usually used to print one of several variants of synonymous words. Therefore, it is likely that the words even in pokoley are presented as variants and perform not the function of a particle, but of a time limit switch. This is confirmed by the fact that JE,, has only one variant left, even (JE,, 34,). In the Lithuanian text of the Gospel editions of 1674, 1679, 1690 there is also only even, and 1705 —aj (31,,). 9 SD 4 is presented as follows: w; ględem c3afu and wiglgdem mieylcd. 120 | MILDA LUČINSKIENĖ CONCLUSIONS In 1674, the editor of the Gospels, when editing JE,, drew attention to the differences in the vocabulary of Jaknavičius and the seven last Gospels. Therefore, in the 1674 edition they were no longer present — these lexicons were adapted to the larger part of the oriental text, i.e. The text of the Gospels is unified. The corrector of the permission to mention abandoned the rarely used and not characteristic of Jaknavičius’ text lexicons (gentis, kuris gi vienas, mala, nuopelnas) and replaced them with those used more frequently in this text (giminė, kiekvienas), and in those cases where he could not find the appropriate variant in Jaknavičius’ text, he apparently used his own dialect word (kandžia, užmokesnis). The switch even handling is also unified. The consistent selection of linguistic facts testifies to the existence of a certain norm in the writings written in the eastern variant of the script. This would be confirmed by the fact that all these JE, corrections did not depend on the Polish original. The few lexical corrections of the last 7 Gospels described in the article show that most of the text was acceptable to the JE,, corrector — so he too (like JE, the anonymous editor) must have come from the Vilnius region, but far from the an /un isophone.
