On December 8, 2005, the Institute of Lithuanian Language hosted a scientific seminar on the subject of the standardization and management of terms, organized by the Centre for Terminology. The seminar was opened by Stasys Keinys, a researcher of the Lithuanian Language Institute, who dedicated his presentation to the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Terminology Commission. Having reviewed the activities of the Terminology Commission of the Institute of Lithuanian Language and Literature and its members, he emphasized that it continued the pre-war traditions of terminology work, regretted that the Institute of Lithuanian Language and the Terminology Centre have recently lost some of their previous functions. Gintautas Grigas, the representative of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, in his presentation Interfaces with the computer: lexicon and terminology spoke about the problems of standardization of computer lexicon and terminology. In addition to terms, there are other words in the user interface vocabulary that acquire a certain meaning in the computer environment. In order for these words to be understood by computer users, they need to be standardized, as do terms. Zigmantas Gudžinskas (Institute of Botany) in his presentation Problems of creating and systematizing botanical terminology and plant nomenclature identified the main challenges and difficulties of botanical terminology. He stated that since 2002 new plant names have been created and discussed in the Terminology Subcommittee of the State Lithuanian Language Commission and more than 6000 plant names have already been considered. There are also about 3000 ornamental and 1500 technical plants. Alvydas Umbrasas, a representative of the Lithuanian Language Institute, presented a report on the term bank of the Republic of Lithuania, its concept and structure. He stated that the creation and completion of the term bank is confronted with the inactivity of the terminology commissions, the lack of terminologists, the reluctance of specialists to change the terms of laws and the impact of poor translations of directives on the legislation. Representative of the Computer Linguistics Group of MII Robertas Stuzinas read a presentation on the use of the largest term base — Lithuanian Language Terminology. Users of the dictionary use a small part of the available searches and usually want all possible information about the search term. Albina Auksoriūtė, Head of the Terminology Centre of the Lithuanian Language Institute, presented the European Union project Euro TermBank. The project is coordinated by Tilde, a Baltic information technology company from Latvia. The aim of the project is to create a term bank that will act as a central database and interface with other national or international term banks and resources. 176 Vilnius University Professor Pranas Juozas Žilinskas told about the obstacles encountered in preparing the Explanatory Dictionary of Metrology Terms. He stated that specialists in various fields want terminologists to explain why one or another term is being corrected. Jonas Klimavičius, a researcher of the Lithuanian Language Institute, delivered the closing remarks. He emphasized that translations and computer-aided terminology recognition programs are only auxiliary methods and not a superior direction to traditional theoretical and practical terminology.
