Qualification courses Summer qualification school for young terminologists of the Baltic countries ROBERTAS Lietuvių kalbos institutas STUNŽINAS On September 4-8, 2006, the Institute of Lithuanian Language hosted the qualification courses for young terminologists of the Baltic countries, organized under the project “Lithuanian researchers’ capacity development for Lithuania integrating into the European Union infrastructure”. The lecturers of the qualification courses are Lithuanian and foreign scientists, the participants are employees of Lithuanian and Latvian scientific and state institutions. lecturers, doctoral students, students. The qualification courses were initiated and most of the courses were conducted by Professor of the University of Finance and Management in Balstogė, Academician S. Grinev-Griniewiczius. The lecture series Logical, Semantic and Onomasological Aspects of Terminology is focused on the main issues of terminology: terminology, terminology, term concepts; the relationship of terminology science with other sciences; the role of terminology in a growing scientific society. The professor introduced the main theorists of terminology, indicated the most important directions of terminology work and terminology management. In the other parts of the lecture cycle, the topics were termining lexicon, its place in language, the most important features and characteristics of terms, genetic, structural, semanting and functional typology of terms. "The role of terminology in the science of language". The speaker also described other units of special lexicon: prototerms, professionalisms, terminoids, preterms, quasiterms. In the lecture series on logical terminological aspects S. GrinevGriniewiczius spoke about the concept of science concepts, types, categories and relationships, mentioned the most typical errors in the definition of science concepts. Speaking about the semantic aspects of terminology, he emphasized the semantic discrepancies between terms and lexical meanings, briefly discussed synonymy of terms, its types, mentioned other terminology phenomena — paronymy, polysemy, homonymy. 236 Robertas Stunzinas | Qualification courses for Baltic youth...
Speaking about onomastological aspects of terminology, the lecturer described structural types of terms, listed types and subtypes of special nominations. He highlighted the role of the oldest layer of special lexicon in the formation of terminology, identified semantic, morphological and syntactic methods of term formation. The phenomena of borrowing and adaptation of terms were also discussed. At the end of the lecture cycle, S. Grinev-Griniewiczius briefly introduced semiotics in terminology. told about a new linguistic direction anthropolinguistics. Dr. J. Klimavičius, senior researcher of the Lithuanian Language Institute, spoke about the history of Lithuanian terminology. The terminologist emphasized. that for a long time the work of terminography was done by individual enlightened enthusiasts, mostly botanists. The beginning of organized terminology —the discussions of specialists gathered in Voronezh after the First World War about John Jablonsky and the creation of a school of terminology. The preparation of the dictionary of contemporary Lithuanian language (1954) also marked the decade of terminology. The year of the Second Lithuanian Republic marked the beginning of a real breakthrough in terminology — about 200 dictionaries and dictionary books were published. A major incentive was the 1996-2005 programme for the use and education of the state language. Documents for the preparation and approval of terminology dictionaries have been adopted. Several capital dictionaries of multilingual terms have been published. J. Klimavičius emphasized that there is a clear imbalance between quantity and quality. So far, terminographic work is not considered scientific, its planning, organization and coordination is not institutionalized. The rise of terminography work remains beyond the horizon. V. Žalkauskas, senior researcher at Vilnius University, spoke about terms management tools and the principles of creating term databases. The lecturer briefly described possible methods of term management in MS Word, MS Excel environments, told about the largest Lithuanian and foreign term databases, briefly described the main database management systems. Most of the time the lecturer devoted to MS Access database creation program. After pointing out the main advantages of this system, V. Žalkauskas discussed and showed the stages of creating a term base. N. J. Matulevičienė, senior specialist of the Ministry of Culture and lecturer at Mykolas Romeris University, spoke about the general issues of copyright in terminology work. The lawyer described the concept of copyright, its protected and unprotected objects, subject, introduced the general provisions on intellectual property, indicated the sources of copyright. Matulevičienė emphasized that the criteria for protection of terminology work results are originality, the result of creative activity, objective form of expression. The lecturer listed the special (sui generis) legal protection provisions for database creators. The cycle of qualification courses was completed by the Vice-Rector of the Institute of Languages and Cultures, Dr. S. Šelovas topic Fields of concepts and structure of concepts in terminology. After introducing the concepts of semantic terminology structure and concept fields, the lecturer mainly talked about the problems of concept fields accuracy. The problem of concept fields and concept structure in terminology of various fields was illustrated by the term data management program Win Term. Certificates were presented to the participants of the qualification courses. It is expected that such regional terminology trainings in the Baltic States will become Lietuvių kalbos institutas traditional and will be organized again next year.
