Terminology seminar Development features of Lithuanian terminology and its current state On AUŠRA RIMKUTĖ Lietuvių kalbos institutas April 19, 2006, the terminology seminar Development features of Lithuanian terminology and its current state was held at the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. The seminar was organized by the Chamber of Scientists of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and the Terminology Centre of the Lithuanian Language Institute. The event was aimed at everyone who is interested in Lithuanian terminology. It was opened and greeted by Aldona Daučiūnienė, Director of the Chamber of Scientists of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. Jonas Klimavičius, senior researcher of the Terminology Centre of the Lithuanian Language Institute, read a presentation entitled Lithuanian terminology: the rail of the century. According to him, Lithuanian terminology begins with the first Lithuanian book — the Catechism of Martynas Mažvydas (1547). For almost three centuries Lithuanian terminology was ecclesiastical or theological and philological. In 1821, Jurgis Ambraziejus published the Dictionarium Botanicum Latino Samogiticum, a dictionary of terms in Lithuanian. The old dictionaries are handwritten. The first printed dictionary of terms appeared only in 1907. According to the linguist, the beginning of organized terminology was in Voronezh before the First World War, where Pranas Mašiotas, Marcelinas Šikšnys, Zigmas Žemaitis, Konstantinas Šakenis used to meet with the linguist Jonas Jablonskis and together created, discussed and approved mathematics, chemistry and physics terms. In 1921, a terminology commission was established. In the 1930s, the Commission consolidated Jablonski’s system of organized creation, consideration and approval of terms. J. Klimavičius calls the period 1938-1954 a huge gap in terminology. because only one Russian-Lithuanian technical dictionary Trump (1949) by A. Novodvorskis was published. Since 1990, the most productive and efficient period of publication of terminological dictionaries has begun. Over the fifteen years (1990-2005) more than 250 dictionaries and glossaries of terms in various fields have been published. The speaker regretted that the technical university, 232 Aušra Rimkutė | Terminology seminar Lithuanian terminology.- .. dictionaries of medical, geographical, geological, musical and other fields. In conclusion, he emphasized that the work of terminology is not considered scientific, and its planning, organization and coordination is not yet institutionalized. Albina Auksoriūte, Head of the Terminology Centre of the Lithuanian Language Institute, presented her presentation entitled “Tasks and prospects of the Terminology Centre”. The fact that terminology work has been carried out at the Lithuanian Language Institute since the very beginning of the institute’s establishment — in 1941 — has been mentioned and written by the speaker several times (see Auksoriūtė 2005: 11-20). In 2003, the Department of Terminology was replaced by the Terminology Centre, whose main activities are to investigate theoretical problems of current Lithuanian terminology, the history of Lithuanian terminology, to establish the principles of Lithuanian terminology, terminography, terminology standardization and management, to manage terms in various fields, to create new ones if necessary, to evaluate and standardize them, to advise the editors of terminology dictionaries, as well as to educate terminology specialists. Since 1994, the Terminology Centre publishes the scientific publication Terminology, organises scientific terminology conferences and seminars for specialists. The staff of the Centre maintains contacts with international terminology organizations INFOTERM, EAFT, etc. Participates in the European Commission project EUROTERMBANK. Concluding her presentation, Auksoriūtė emphasized that terminology work at the Institute of Lithuanian Language has been carried out for more than six decades and its scope has expanded considerably. Previously, the terminologists of the Lithuanian Language Institute worked more practical terminology work, and in recent years the institute is developing more scientific theoretical terminology work, although the Terminology Center employees also have a considerable practical work load. International cooperation is expanding, contacts are maintained not only with the closest neighbors — Latvian and Estonian scholars, but also with Russian school terminologists and representatives of Western terminology schools. One of the main problems is the lack of qualified terminology, the Seminar also presented the twelfth issue of the journal Terminology. The journal consists of four sections: Terminology and the present; History of terminology; Notes. considerations, suggestions, details; Reviews, reviews, information, bibliography. Editor Jonas Klimavičius was pleased with the abundance of articles, although many of them were written by young researchers. The terminology is written about construction (R. Stunzinas), warfare (V. Drotvinas). terminology of religion (A. Rimkutė), medicine (P. Zemlevičiūtė), literary science (A. Mitkevičienė), law (A. Umbrasas). According to the editor, present and past, structure and development, native and borrowed terminology, variation and norms are paths through which one penetrates sources and data, glances from which one evaluates. In the section of comments, considerations, proposals, the editor’s continuation article Termas prie termino II, Dvyliktasis Terminologija- ’s issue is full of information, which testifies to the wide-ranging terminology activity. Reviews by J. Klimavičius, S. Labanauskienė and A. Rimkutė are also published. In addition, an annotated terminology bibliography (20 positions) is published. Linguist Stasys Keinys presented a collection of articles titled Problems of terminology of the Baltic nations and the European Union, prepared on the basis of the papers presented at the international terminology seminar “Problems and challenges of terminology of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in the European Union”, organized by the Terminology Centre of the Lithuanian Language Institute on 5-6 October 2004. He briefly presented the I (= we articles. The article by Christijan Galinski, Director General of the International Terminology Information Centre (INFOTERM), analyses the activities of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and semantic harmonization, while the article by Sergei Shelov, Head of the Committee on Scientific Terminology of Fundamental Sciences of the Institute of Problems of Information Transmission of the Russian Academy of Sciences, deals with issues of terminology theory — what is a term, how it is defined, what are the types of term definitions, etc. Estonian (H. Tamm), Latvian (D. Reizniece, J. Sylis, I. Ilzinia, J. Borzovs). Articles by Lithuanian (A. Auksoriūtė, N. Dudlauskienė, St. Keinys, S. Meškauskienė), Hungarian (J. Pustajus), Russian (V. Leičikas, S. Šelovas) linguists and specialists in other fields deal with the state and problems of terminology in these languages. It is hoped that this collection of articles will be useful both for those working in practical terminology work and for all those interested in terminology. A new terminology publication was also presented at the terminology seminar — a collection of articles by the linguist Jonas Klimavičius, Leksikologijos ir terminologijos darbai: norma ir istorija (Lexicology and terminology works: norm and history). The collection was presented by the author himself, quoting his own words written in Pratarmė, that he was “happily pushed into linguistics by Kazimieras Kuzavinis” (Klimavičius 2005: 7). The book consists of two parts and at the end of the printed unified lists of abbreviations of common literature and sources and a word index. All articles, according to the author, at least slightly supplemented and edited. “The two aspects of the study – historical and normative – were consistently combined. The systematic nature of the lexicon and terminology is highly regarded. This unites and diversity of topics. Random, fashion pendulum or other language examples dictated, rather than naturally internal development cultivated norms 234 Aušra Rimkutė | Terminology seminar Lithuanian terminology... seems the most disastrous thing” (Klimavičius 2005: 8). In the first part of the collection of articles are printed articles of lexicology. First, we try to explain: What is the vocabulary of common language? Detailed and extensive discussion of the words gooddoer, baddoer, nobody; offering, offering, offering; determine, condition, decide; number, counter, countable, count; absorb and assimilate; to be interested and interested in; interest; amtmon and amstrot; The origin and use of Kerza shoes. The words with no prefix are widely discussed. The article Semantic values and motivation lessons is written about debt and values. The second part deals with terminology. From the article Motivation lessons you can learn about Lithuanian terminology. J. Klimavičius sees the scientific terminology first of all as having grown out of the popular terminology and as ever growing (From the popular terminology to the scientific one). In separate articles, the origin, prevalence, usage, norm of terms from textiles, metals, aviation, artillery, ornithology, geology, physics, technology, sports and other fields are explained. The book ends with a fairly extensive overview of Lithuanian terminology — Lithuanian terminology: past features, present difficulties and challenges. In the terminology seminar “Traits of the development of Lithuanian terminology and its current state” the participants were introduced to national terminology and terminography, their development and current state, it was shown that terminology work in Lithuania is productive, and the latest publications of terminologists were presented.
