Conference Globalization: translation, the problem of borrowed and national terminology: overview of terminology activities of higher education institutions and research institutions, discussion of theoretical terminology subjects, specificity of national terminology and ways of its expression, relationship of national and borrowed terminology, translation and comparison of national terms with foreign equivalents, basic principles of terminology. After the Vice-Rector of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University Prof. Dr. R. Kirvaitis, who presented the university and its activities to the guests, and the director of the Humanitarian Institute Prof. Dr. The plenary session began with Mr. Tamošauskas’ introductory speech. Prof. habil. dr. V. Skujiņa (Riga, LVI) in her presentation “Relations between national and international terminology”, based on the theory of internationalization of scientific and technical terminology by engineer researcher E. Drezens, emphasized the importance of the term concept. It is easier to adapt a word in your own language when its definition is constant. In the native language, the meaning of such a term is easier to understand. If a word does not have a precise definition, it is difficult to find equivalents. It is emphasized that the language must adhere to mononymy: one term for one concept. In her presentation, M. L. Drazdauskienė (VU) examined the issues of language and culture, the use and spread of existing terms and new creations from the experience of the emergence and creation of terms and their functioning. The presentation of A. Auksoriūte (LKI) – Eurotermbankas – bank of new terms, a project in which seven European Union member states, including Lithuania, participated. It is designed to harmonize and unify terminology work in the new EU countries. The result of the project is the creation of an online term bank for all these countries. It contains over 70 thousand Lithuanian terms with conference Globalization: translation... Terminology | 2007 | 14 199 correspondences. This application can be customized to your needs according to various search options. The next – the term bank of the Republic of Lithuania – was presented by A. Ivanauskienė (VLKK). In 2003, on the initiative of the State Lithuanian Language Commission, together with other institutions, the Law on the Term Bank of the Republic of Lithuania was adopted. One of the tasks of this bank is to provide easier access to terminological information for researchers, translators, editors and other specialists. It is a large information system, already containing about 60 thousand term articles. The presentation of Dr. A. Velička (VGTU) “The concept of the essence of the term” was more intended for foreign language specialists. According to the author, at present the concept of the essence of the term is established, but this can not be said about the exact sciences. The names of diseases in Dr. Jono Basanavičiaus’s dictionary of folk medicine terms „Medega musu tautiszkai vaistinykystai“ – the topic of the presentation of PhD student P. Zemlevičiūtė (LKI). The names of diseases in this dictionary were compared with the data of the Medical Terms Dictionary. Although the dictionary was published at the end of the 19th century, in the author’s opinion, it is significant for the history of Lithuanian medicine and has lasting value. Speaker Z. Stanevičienė (VU) spoke about German borrowings in old Prussian catechisms. She discussed the linguistic situation in the Prussian lands more than five hundred years ago and the penetration of Germanic elements into the Prussian language – language interference. Presentation of PhD student R. Stunžinas – On metaphorical construction terms. Metaphorical terms are associated with the initial stage of the formation of special lexicon, when the sign of language reflects the naive understanding of objects, their properties, actions and processes. According to the speaker, one of the main features of the terminology of metaphorical construction is anthropocentricity. The metaphorization of meanings mainly took place according to some external similarity. These metaphors are not new – the terms are created according to the models of ordinary lexicon. The thesis of doctoral student A. Mitkevičienė (LKI) is entitled “Terminology features of Lithuanian literary science in the 19th century” – a look at literary science works in the 19th century, printed in Lithuanian. The first theoretical work on poetry written in Lithuanian is considered to be S. Daukanto study The Way of Tales, included in the book Tales of Fedro. Literary works increased in the second half of the 19th century, with the emergence of Lithuanian periodicals. A. Kitkauskienė (VGTU). According to her, most of the sacral names are borrowed, 95% of them from Latin and Greek. In the words of the author, new terms of religion are not made today at all. Presentation by L. Šiaučiūnienė, D. Kemeklienė (Panevėžys, KTU) – Problems of social role of advertising and borrowed terminology in urban retail networks and media. Among the many innovations – advertising and its language – it should be short, understandable, correct, compelling, without foreign words. But the reality is different. The speakers highlighted the negative influence of advertising on the common language and the problems of translation. Language is polluted by inappropriate trade names, public signage and language errors in television advertising. The presentation of Dr. A. Kaulakienė and PhD student A. Rimkutė, entitled Analysis of Some Modern Computing Microsystems (VGTU, LKI), discussed the dictionaries of computer terms (1971–2005), which today number about fifteen, and analyzed the names of hardware and software, as well as the terms of computer programs themselves. Dr. G. Grigas (MII) spoke about Computer terminology and lexicon – team names, trademarks, abbreviations. He provided many valuable practical advice and suggestions. V. Dagis (MII) in his presentation “Electronic mail and Lithuanian characters” examined the technological and psychological reasons for refusing to use the characters of the Lithuanian alphabet in e-mail messages, and discussed factors that should help to improve the situation. Dr. V. Valiukėnas (LSD) emphasized the importance of organizing not only Lithuanian terms in dictionaries, but also foreign language equivalents, in his presentation Problems of standardization and management of terms in physics and technology. The author also proposed to include in the contracts with the editors measures ensuring the participation of the dictionary editors in its approval by the VLKK and implementation of the LTB. VGTU lecturer R. Žukienė spoke about terminological research of master’s theses. Its theme is the analysis of borrowings used in the academic language of students. It was emphasized that in Lithuania there is an increasing use of borrowed words, especially English words, which negatively affect scientific works. In order to teach students proper language, it is important not only to create conditions for them, but also to demand that the specialty teachers speak correctly.
