V. Vinogradov Institute of held an international symposium Terminology and knowledge. The event was Russian Language, headed by Dr. V. V. Vinogradov, founded in September 2007. Sergei Shelov. As stated on the website of the Terminology Centre, the goals and tasks of the Centre are as follows: scientific research on terminology, special lexicon, scientific and technical language; scientific research on the culture of the Russian language in the fields of professional activity; preparation and publication of scientific normative terminology sets; development of term databases; assistance in the preparation of scientific normative terminology and special language dictionaries; dictionaries and standards of normative terms; cooperation with other scientific institutions and international organisations (IIFT, AEFT, Infoterm, Nordterm). 18 scientific papers were presented at the symposium. Most of the speakers were from Russia, four presentations were read by guests from Germany, Ukraine, Finland and Lithuania. The reports can be divided into four thematic groups. Terminology resources and classification of special lexicon were discussed in three presentations: Taras Kijak from Kiev spoke about linguistics and terminology of professional languages, Prof. habil. dr. Vladimiras Leičikas examined the general typology and multi-aspect classification of special lexicon, and the author of this article reviewed Lithuanian terminology resources, told not only about printed dictionaries of terms in Lithuania, but also about term databases and banks. Most of the scholars (Larisa Alekseeva (Perm), Elena Golovanova (Chelyabinsk), Larisa Manerko (Ryazan), Serafima Nikitin (Moscow), Valentina Novodranova (Moscow), Tamara Pristaiko (Dnipropetrovsk) and Margarita 260 Bondarchuk (Kiev)) read papers on the problems of cognitive terminology. The issues of terminology and formalized knowledge presentation are discussed in three reports. Heribert Picht from Bremerfelde spoke about non-verbal graphic objects and the representation of concepts in the humanities, Igoris Kudaševas from Kouvola (Finland) together with Irina Kudaševa discussed the modeling of logical concept schemes in term dictionaries, and the head of the Terminology Center of the V. V. Vinogradov Institute of Russian Language, habil. dr. Sergejus Šelovas presented the terminology knowledge base WinTerm, presented a summary of linguistic and computer results. The fourth topic analysed the terminology of individual scientific fields. Elena Nikulina and Valentina Ikonikova (Moscow) discussed the variability of terms in the US legal terminology system, Larisa Raciburskaja (Nizhny Novgorod) and Galina Ivanova (Kirov) discussed the variability and synonymy of morphemics and word formation metalanguage, Nadezhda Ryabceva (Moscow) – the role of linguistic terminology in organizing and formalizing translated knowledge. The symposium was interesting and useful, it was attended by representatives of various Russian terminology schools, there was a lot of discussion, the participants suggested to organize a larger international terminology conference in Moscow. In 2008, the entire second week of August was dedicated to international terminology events. The annual meetings of the 37th Technical Committee on Terminology and Other Language and Content Resources of the International Organization for Standardization and its subcommittees were held in Moscow on August 11-15 at the Academy of Labour and Social Relations. It was decided to relocate the secretariat of the 37th Technical Committee on Terminology and Other Language and Content Resources from Vienna to China, and to hold the annual meetings of the Committee in Bogotá, Colombia, in 2009. On August 12, the ninth session of the General Assembly of the International Terminology Information Centre Infoterm was convened in Moscow, where the 2007 Infoterm report and the 2007 auditor’s report were presented, the 2009 budget, the 2009-2012 Infoterm work programme, the 2008-2009 work plan and the Infoterm Executive Board were approved, and other operational issues were discussed. The international conference “Terminology and Information Interaction – Knowledge and Content Management” took place on August 16. Chapin (Great Britain), R. Pohn (Austria), H. J. Kokkert (Belgium); R. Weissinger presented the database of the International Organization for Standardization, A. K. Melby – the structure of term databases TBX. Two presentations were read by Infoterm representatives: Ch. Galinskis talked about terminology on the web – terminology availability, its dissemination and creation on the web, while A. Drame discussed the development of a strategy for terminology planning and management. Several papers were presented by Russian scholars: three authors – V. Galkinas, A. Kozlov and S. Griniov – reviewed the theory and practice of terminology standardization in Russia; V. Novodranova spoke about the basic principles of creating a dictionary of international morphemes, i.e. morphemes of Greek and Latin origin used in Russian; V. Leičikas and E. Nikulina analyzed the term, the concept and the correlation between the term and what it means and expresses from a cognitive point of view; S. Šelovas discussed the definitions of terms in normative dictionaries; A. Goriačevas presented Microsoft’s terminology services related to localization. In her presentation, L. Ryčkova from Belarus examined the situation of the Belarusian language and terminology in Belarus, revealed the influence of Russian and English languages on the Belarusian language and terminology. In their joint paper, I. Kudaševas and I. Kudaševa, working in Finland, analysed the characteristics of terminology dictionaries for translators. The conference “Terminology and Information Interaction – Knowledge and Content Management” examined several topics, scholars from various countries discussed topical terminology issues and emerging problems.
