The International Scientific Conference on Terminology Methodology, its Present and Future Application was organized by the Terminology Centre of the Lithuanian Language Institute together with the international terminology information centre Infoterm. The event, held on 12-13 October, was dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Terminology Commission. A number of prominent scientists and social figures of the time took part in the activities of this Commission, which was established by the Ministry of Education – Kazimieras Būga, Jonas Jablonskis, Pranas Mašiotas, Antanas Smetona, Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas, Antanas Vireliūnas and others. After five years of work, the Commission considered and approved a number of terms in various fields, some of which are presented in the dictionary Pronouns or Terms adopted by the Terminology Commission, published in 1924. The Commission’s work, although it received controversial assessments, was the first attempt at organized standardization of Lithuanian terminology. The conference was attended by speakers from Austria, Belarus, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Russia. On the first day of the conference, papers will be read in English. The main focus was on the development of terminology science, the development of terminology, the creation and application of information and communication technologies in terminology work, as well as terminology and specialty language teaching issues. The first two papers were devoted to the development of terminology science. Guest speaker Heribert Picht reviewed the reasons and prerequisites for the emergence of terminology as a separate discipline, as well as the influence of standardization, the Wirtschaftslinguistik movement in German-speaking countries, the works of E. Wüster, E. Drezen and D. S. Lotte and the model proposed by L. Hoffmann on the development of terminology. In reviewing the terminology schools, the speaker pointed out that the main approaches of these schools to 199Terminology | 2011 | 18 terminology theory does not differ. According to H. Picht, terminology is an independent discipline of modern linguistics, characterized by a metadisciplinary character. Sergius Grinevas-Griniewiczius (Balstoge University, Moscow Humanitarian Pedagogical Institute) observed that the history of terminology can be seen as the history of the development of methods of studying special lexicon. He discussed systematic, typological, semiotic, parametric approaches, methods of constructive analysis and reversibility of terms, as well as anthropological approach proposed by the speaker himself. Ágota Fóris (Charles Gaspar University, Budapest) spoke about the interrelationships between terminology and text linguistics. Of the seven characteristics of text, the speaker paid special attention to coherence, spoke about the role of terminology in encoding knowledge in the text and decoding it. The presentation by Brian Ó Raghallaigh and Gearóid Ó Cleircín from Fiontar, Dublin City University, focused on Irish-language terms in IATE, the multilingual terminology database of the European Union institutions. As Irish became an official language of the European Union, the need for Irish terminology increased. The speakers shared their experience in creating and managing terminology, introduced the Irish institutions working on this work and the term bank. Valentīna Skujiņa from the Institute of Latvian Language of the University of Latvia and Ilze Irēna Ilziņa from the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the same university spoke about the influence of translation on the development of Latvian terminology and the importance of international terminology standards for terminology harmonization. Another guest speaker, Christian Galinski, Director of Infoterm, who opened the afternoon session, focused on the importance of content compatibility and the role of international standards in achieving compatibility. The topic of standardization was continued by Klaus-Dirk Schmitz from the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne, who spoke about the benefits of international standards for the exchange of terminological data. Liudmila Ryčkova (Janka Kupala Grodno State University) read a presentation on special language teaching. The speaker noted that, as the knowledge society develops, terminology becomes increasingly important not only for specialists in a particular field, but also in a broader sociocultural context. The presentation by Sergei Shelov from the Viktor Vinogradov Institute of Russian Language (Moscow) was dedicated to implied information in the terminology knowledge base. The second day of the conference was dedicated to Lithuanian terminology. The reports are read in Lithuanian. In the morning session, discussions were held about 200 J. Gaivenytė-Butler, D. Šilobritaitė | Terminology events Lithuanian | Lietuvių kalbos institute terminology development, the activities of the Terminology Commission and its role in the history of Lithuanian terminology. Albina Auksoriūtė, head of the Terminology Centre of the Lithuanian Language Institute, gave an overview of the activities of the Terminology Commission (1921–1926) – she discussed the tasks of this Commission and the work done, assessed their importance for the further development of terminology in Lithuania. Vincentas Drotvinas from Vilnius University of Education introduced the audience to the nomenclature of craftsmen in ancient writings and bilingual lexicographic works of the 17th-18th centuries. The material was discussed in several aspects: the speaker analyzed the peculiarities of the presentation of terms in dictionaries, the specialization of craftsmen, the origin of Eastern Highland and Western Highland dictionaries, the history of the use of names, etc. Employees of the Terminology Centre of the Lithuanian Language Institute spoke about the history of terminology in individual fields of science. Palmira Zemlevičiūtė reviewed the origin and synonymy of terms in articles about health in the newspaper Keleivis (1849–1880), drawing attention to words that did not become medical terms. Robert Stunžinas talked about the species of construction folk terms, emphasizing that the analysis of terms in terms of genus and species is an important task of terminology. Solvita Labanauskienė discussed the origin of Lithuanian and Latvian plant genus names used in the flora of the Baltic countries (1993–2003). The speaker compared several groups of Baltic plant genus names and highlighted similarities and differences between Lithuanian and Latvian plant genus names. Diana Šilobritaitė analyzed the methods and means of creating terms used in the textbook of arithmetic Four most important works of arithmetic (1886) by the Lithuanian social figure of the late 19th and early 20th centuries Petras Vileišis and compared them with the current terms of mathematics. Asta Mitkevičienė spoke about the role of the Terminology Commission in the history of Lithuanian literary science terminology and outlined which literary science terms were discussed in this Commission. Separately, the speaker discussed the synonymy of literary terms. Alvydas Umbrasas examined the structure of the manuscript Russian-Lithuanian Dictionary of Legal Terms (1920). According to the speaker, the structure of the glossary is not typical for terminology dictionaries. The afternoon session discussed the problems of modern Lithuanian terminology. Audra Ivanauskienė (State Lithuanian Language Commission) presented the Commission’s work on terminology. She emphasized the need to ensure the dissemination of correct terminology, and also drew attention to the Lithuanian and European 201Terminologija | 2011 | 18 cooperation between Union institutions and professionals on terms. Egidijus Zaikauskas from the Lithuanian Language Department of the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Commission spoke about Lithuanian terminology in the European Union institutions: he discussed translation and text terminology, legal consistency, document translation time, etc. The aim of the presentation by Regina Kvašytė from Šiauliai University was to identify the peculiarities of metalanguage in Lithuanian and Latvian terminology based on scientific works and dictionaries. She examined the microsystem of terms formed with the root termin Lithuanian and Latvian languages. The presentation prepared by the authors – Erika Rimkute, Gintarė Grigonytė, Andrius Utka and Loic Boizou – from Vytautas Magnus University presented attempts to automatically identify Lithuanian language terms using a linguistic method. It was emphasized how the use of certain computer programs can speed up the process of determining possible deadlines. Gintautas Grigas and Tatjana Jevsikova from the Department of Informatics Methodology of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of Vilnius University presented a report on English-Lithuanian computer phrases. The main focus was on tools that would accelerate the Lithuanianization of software and improve the quality of translation of terms. Markas Paura from the Department of Translation Studies of Vilnius University spoke about the concept of computer virus and the interdisciplinary nature of this concept. The presentation by Vilija Cieliešienė from Kaunas University of Technology outlined the structure of Lithuanian synonymous computer terms of various origins, examined what terms students tend to use, discussed factors determining one or another choice. Eglė Dumšienė from Šiauliai State College analyzed the usage of computer terms in the final projects of the Information Systems Technology study program. The rapporteur identified groups of errors in these terms (foreign words, terminology and forms, etc.). Agnė Strelkauskytė, a student of Vilnius University, examined the vocabulary and terminology of the social network Facebook website, which was compared with websites of other networks. Alvydas Umbrasas, employee of the Terminology Centre, summarized the conference. The conference program and theses can be found on the website of the Lithuanian Language Institute. Some of the articles prepared on the basis of the conference reports are published in this issue of Terminology, and several more will be published in the nineteenth issue of the journal. 202 J. Šilobritaitė | Terminology events | Lietuvių kalbos institute On 17-18 October, Professor Emeritus Heribert Picht, one of the most renowned European terminologists, lectured at a terminology seminar organized by the Terminology Centre. As a lecturer he has participated in terminology training courses in 16 countries, as a visiting professor he has taught at the Norwegian School of Economics (Norges Handelshøjskole) and for many years he has worked at the Copenhagen Business School (Handelshøjskolen). His fields of research include theoretical and applied terminology, specialized language (SL), knowledge management and term banks, language and terminology planning, terminology training, professional communication. Professor Heribert Picht is the first terminologist to be awarded the Eugen Wüster Prize, which has been awarded since 1997 by the international terminology information centre Infoterm for outstanding achievements in the field of terminology. In 2007, John Benjamins published a collection of terminology articles in his honor, Indeterminacy in Terminology and LSP (red. Bassey Edem Antia). On the first day of the seminar Prof. H. Pichtas gave three lectures. The lecture Terminology, LSP and professional communication discussed the development of the terminology discipline, its place among other linguistic disciplines, the relationship between terminology and professional language, their importance for professional communication and knowledge transfer in general. The lecture Object, concept and their representational forms was devoted to the basic concepts and terms of terminology. The professor spoke about the concept of object, concept and term, classifications of objects, extension and intent of concepts, linguistic, sociolinguistic and methodological principles of term creation, definitions of terms, terminological combinations, non-verbal forms of representation of concepts and the importance of their inclusion in terminological databases, reviewed the definitions of the main terminology terms in international standards, drew the attention of the listeners to the inconsistencies occurring in them. In the lecture Knowledge ordering at conceptual level, we talked about relationships between objects, between concepts and between concepts and terms. On the second day of the seminar two topics were discussed. The lecture Language planning and terminology planning was dedicated to the objectives, means and institutions of language planning, the fields and methods of terminology planning, terminology standardization and language relations in various fields of activity. Pichtas raised the question sciencesandprofessionalcommunication(Neapibrėžtumas,mokslaiirprofeof whether uncertainty and certainty are a true dichotomy, proposed definitions of the concept as a unit of thought, the concept as a unit of knowledge and the concept as a unit of cognition, drew attention to the fact that epistemological uncertainty should be distinguished from the uncertainty caused by the term used in the text (the image of the concept), and showed how it is possible to apply terminological methods to achieve the certainty of the terminological unit.
