247Terminologija | 2012 | 19 International Scientific Conference Grammatical and Lexical System of Language, its Functionality and Normativity SOLvITA LABANAUSKIENė In the spring of this year, the Faculty of Humanities and the Department of Baltic Linguistics of the University of Latvia organized the 48th International Confetti Latvistics and Baltic Studies, dedicated to the prominent Latvian linguist, folklorist, Conference of the Latvian and General Linguistics Department of the Department of literary scholar and methodologist Arturs Ozols. On March 15-16, speakers from Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and Finland came to the university to discuss. The morning part of the first day was dedicated to revealing the personality and activities of A. Uozuolis. In Ojārs Lāms’ presentation Arturs Uozuolis and Latvian literary studies, he introduced the researcher’s articles, which are important in the study of modern literary trends in Europe, unpublished material of literary science and abstracts of lectures on the history of Latvian literature. Mara Vyksna (Māra Vīksna) and Rita Treija talked about A. Uozuols’ archive material preserved in the Latvian Folklore Repository, which testifies to the researcher’s ability to attract young people to folklore collection. Ilona Miezīte, a representative of the Museum of Literature and Music (formerly the Rainis Museum of Literature and Art), gave an overview of A. Uozuolis’ professional activities (his doctoral dissertation on the syntax of Latvian folk songs) and his personal life. He told that in the last years of his life A. Uozuolas had begun writing a humorous play, the prototype of the main character of which was probably himself, and the other characters – his colleagues linguists. Later, the work was continued in two sections. Dzintra Lele-Rozentāle and Ineta Balode talked about the 19th-century “pidžinization” of Latvian, which was characterized by excessively regular speech (Fardon (= Pardon)), the use of elements of Baltic German (/g/ > /j/), etc. 248 Solvita Labanauskienė | International Scientific Conference Language Grammar | irleksinėsistema,josfunkcionalumasirnormatyvumas Rasuolė Vladarskienė mentioned the current problems of language management of translations of European Union documents: terminology, morphology, syntax. The rapporteur emphasized the need to take care of the correctness of translations, since translations of European Union documents directly affect the common Lithuanian language. In the words of R. Vladarskiene, when translating EU documents it is necessary not to depart from the original, therefore long, complex structured, unclear sentences from EU documents enter the Lithuanian text and change the peculiar features of administrative style cherished for decades. In her presentation, Valda Salmiņa drew attention to the trends in the use of Armenian names in Latvian – the existence of parallel forms and their reasons. Rita Miliūnaitė presented the database of Lithuanian new words. The linguist emphasized the theoretical and applied objectives of the project: to create a database, to constantly accumulate new vocabulary of the Lithuanian language and, in the long term, to reveal a systematic picture of this vocabulary through scientific research. According to R. Miliūnaitė, the database of new words allows to conclude that the Lithuanian language has sufficient creative powers to renew and satisfy the most diverse needs of the society that uses it. In the second section, Grammar and Lexicon, Bronius Maskuliūnas examined texts from the 18th century, which is perhaps one of the least studied periods in the development of the Lithuanian written language. In more detail, he reviewed one aspect of Lithuanian written language usage – the expression of reflexivity. Anna Frīdenberga explained the motivation of the Latvian suffix -ība (-yba) derivatives in the works of the first Latvian linguist and writer Georgs Mancelis. In the opinion of the young linguist, the names of features with the suffix *-ībā as a separate type of word formation are characteristic of the Baltic languages. The presentation of Rolandas Kregždis was devoted to the methodology of determining the grammatical form of the Lithuanian language lexems, based on semantic analysis, which is important not only for determining the etymology of the word, but also for codifying its grammatical meaning. Liene Markus-Narvila talked about Germanisms in the dialects of southwestern Curonian Spit and their sources of borrowing. She pointed out that some Germanisms are still vital in the beginning of the 21st century – their phonetic and morphological variants are found in dialects. After the opening of the exhibition Arturs Uozuols – 100 Dzintra Paegle talked about the forgotten manuscript of A. Uozuols’ methodology, and Lidija Leikuma – about the relevance of A. Uozuols’ concept of teaching Latvian language today. 249Terminologija | 2012 | 19 The afternoon part of the conference was devoted to discussing the problems of mother tongue. Ina Boikienė and Nadežda Ševeliova discussed the development of students’ creative abilities in mother tongue (Russian) lessons. According to the speakers, the problem is relevant in that the development of creative abilities is an important condition for developing the student’s personality. Vineta Vaivade, a methodologist from the Education Department of the Latvian Language Agency, gave an overview of the quality of education in Latvia. After examining the Latvian language teaching materials published by some publishers for grades 5-9, she came to the following conclusions: (a) lack of a common understanding of learning skills; (b) students are not provided with examples of the tasks and their progress; c) lack of development of independent learning skills, etc. Ingrida Balčiūnienė and Gintara Povilaitienė presented the methodology of developing cohesive storytelling using sequences of pictures. He paid a lot of attention to the context of the task, which gives the child additional opportunities to better understand the functions, structure and rules of the coherent narrative. Evelina Zilgalve discussed the criteria for assigning a particle and an adverb, reviewed problematic cases. In the section Lexicon and terminology, three papers were presented on plant names. Laimutė Baluodė (Laimute Balode) analyzed the use of July in Latvian toponymy. The first part of the presentation was devoted to the objects named with the lexicon liepa, and the author looked at the nomenclature of place names, in the second part the author examined the derivatives of the word liepa. The presentation Latvian folk song lexicon in Lithuanian: tree names was read by Regina Kvašytė. The lecturer collected the material from the collection of Latvian folk songs Lekia mano žirgelis (1989; translated by Sigitas Geda) and found that the most common name of the tree in the translations is oak, half so often – birch. Solvita Labanauskienė spoke about Lithuanian and Latvian names of plant genera in the flora of the Baltic countries. She discussed the name of the tribes, the derivatives and the stitches, showing their similarities and differences. The last presentation of this section by Ineta Bernota was devoted to the discussion of culinary terms in the first cookbooks published in Latvian. The second day of the conference was opened by Diana Laiveniece and Normunds Dzintars (University of Latvia). The speakers reviewed the contribution of A. Uozuols to Latvian language teaching methodology. Inta Urbanoviča presented significant material of A. Uozuolis’s history of linguistics, which reflects the development of European structuralist ideas. 250 Solvita Labanauskienė | International Scientific Conference Grammar of | irleksinėsistema,josfunkcionalumasirnormatyvumas Languages The presentations of the Grammar Section were focused on morphology and syntax. Līga Vogina discussed A. Uozuolis’ observations on the semantics of sentences. According to the speaker, most of the syntax issues are dealt with in the linguist’s doctoral dissertation Syntax issues of classical Latvian folk songs. Other problems of Latvian language syntax were discussed by Natalija Perkova (Usage of possessive pronouns and the noun verb in Latvian sentences with non-verbal predicates), Liene Kalviša (Requirement and evidence) and Linda Apse (Significance and use of the preposition ANT). Gita Elksnytė (Gita Elksnīte) read a report on adjective combinations in 17th century dictionaries. The speaker compared the types of syntactic relationships of these word combinations used in the dictionaries of Georg Mancelis, Janis Langijs and Kristofors Fīrekers. In the section of lexicon and lexicography Brigita Bušmanė spoke about the semantics of the verb eat. She revealed that the synonyms of this word in dialects can indicate the intensity, speed, duration, way of action, etc. Janina Švambarytė-Valužienė presented the historical dictionary of the narrative folklore lexicon prepared by Mato Slančiauskas and his collaborators, which presents the lexicon of Northern Lithuania. Ilga Migla reported on phraseological comparisons in Latvian folk songs. According to the researcher, in his works A. Uozuolas lists the names of plants and trees that prevail in Latvian folk songs: linden, oak, rose, flower. Violeta Černė examined the presentation of musical instrument names in the Explanatory Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language, drawing attention to their semantic data and illustration fields. Diana Šilobritaitė discussed the formation of Lithuanian mathematical terminology in the first half of the 19th and early 20th centuries and the terminology of the first printed Lithuanian arithmetic textbooks. She compared the textbooks of prominent public figures Povilas Matulionis, Jonas Spudulis and Petras Vileišis, and carried out an analysis of mathematical terms. In the post-event Phonetics section, the acoustic features of Latvian sounds were discussed. Juris Grigorjevs (Acoustical characteristics of lateral and vibrant consonants in Latvian), Inese Indričāne (Separation of muffled Afrikaans /c/, /č/ and consonants /ts/, /tš/), Solveiga Čeirane (Formative transitions in Latvian) presented their papers. 251Terminology | 2012 | 19 Comparison: CV or VC). Ilze Auziņa, Gunta Nešpore and Baiba Saulīte talked about the intonation of the text being read. In the second section, Dzintra Šulce addressed the issues of language standardization. She examined the minutes of the meetings of the Riga Latvian Society’s Language Section in 1933–1942. The speaker presented the opinion of Janis Endzelyns (Jānis Endzelīns) on the formation, usage and spelling of individual grammatical forms. Daiva Murmulaitytė talked about how the General Lithuanian Language Dictionary prepared by the Lithuanian Language Institute tries to follow the principle of systematicity in presenting derivatives, and what difficulties are encountered. Three types of derivatives are examined: abstracts of verbs and nouns, deminutives and derivatives with the prefix ne-. Vilija Sakalauskienė discussed the problems of presenting synonymous meanings in Lithuanian explanatory dictionaries. In her opinion, the emerging debate shows that the problem of synonymy is becoming very relevant. This makes it necessary to re-examine synonymy and the concept of synonym, to review the dictionaries already published and to be particularly vigilant when preparing new ones. Latvian scholar Olga Uozuolinia (Olga Ozoliņa) discussed the medieval common French language in her presentation. The final papers of the conference were devoted to A. Uozuolis’s syntax works. Andra Kalnača read the presentation “Today’s interpretation of Artur Uozuolas’ analytical debut”, and Ilze Lokmane – “Artur Uozuolas and problematic issues of current syntax”. International thematic A. Uozuolis conferences have been organized in Riga since 1965, so the organizers invite you to meet again next year. A collection of thesis of conference reports has been published. Retrieved 2012-11-16. Solvita Labanauskienė Institute of Lithuanian Language P.
