In 2009, E. Kisinas’s electronic English–Lithuanian Military Dictionary was published. An updated, revised edition was prepared on the basis of this dictionary. As the author notes in the preface, “[t]he Lithuanian military terminology has not yet become established, so comments and suggestions received from specialists led to the publication of the third edition” (p. 5). The translation dictionary includes all the terms from the three encyclopedic dictionaries prepared by E. Kisinas (military affairs, protection against weapons of mass destruction, and artillery), almost all the terms from the NATO Terminology Database, and about 4,000 terms from various military and related fields. The publication is intended for students at military educational institutions, English translators and teachers, and all officers, warrant officers, and sergeants in the national defence system. The dictionary is arranged alphabetically by nested entries. The Lithuanian equivalent is given alongside each English term. Lithuanian equivalents are marked for stress. At the beginning of the dictionary are a short author biography, a preface, a description of the dictionary’s structure, and lists of English and Lithuanian abbreviations and shortened forms. Alongside the Lithuanian term, the Latin equivalent is given, and the origins of single-word international terms are explained. For some terms, the year in which they were first used is indicated. Synonyms and corrections of non-standard terms are included. Lithuanian terms are marked for stress. The dictionary has a mixed structure: some multiword terms are arranged alphabetically by the first element, while others are grouped into nested entries and subentries by the main element. Cross-references to related terms are provided. An alphabetical index of Lithuanian terms facilitates searching. The dictionary also includes an “Index of Equivalents in Latin, Greek, and Other Languages” and a list of the scholars mentioned in the dictionary, with names given in both their original and adapted forms, along with biographical information. The translated dictionary compiled by senior lecturers at the Institute of Foreign Languages of the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania includes not only aircraft maintenance terms, but also other words and phrases most commonly used in technical literature and documents in this field. The dictionary was prepared on the basis of teaching materials used in English-language courses and distance-learning courses for the engineering and technical staff (mechanics and avionics specialists) responsible for aircraft maintenance in the Lithuanian Air Force. This is an expanded edition of the dictionary published in 2012 under the same title. The dictionary contains 6,000 headwords and 350 abbreviations. The publication is called a terminology dictionary, but has more of the features of a dictionary prepared according to general lexicographic principles. Entries include illustrative examples (phrases with terms or other headwords); irregular verb forms are given, and the prepositions most commonly used with words are indicated. The arrangement is alphabetical. Lithuanian terms are unaccented. At the end is an alphabetical list of abbreviations and their English explanations. The translated dictionary contains about 15,000 words most commonly used in mechanical engineering and railway fields. The publication is intended for students, engineers, and other specialists who read literature in Russian. Lithuanian terms are accented. In the online dictionary, equivalents can be searched for using either a Russian or a Lithuanian word. The publication has been assigned the digital object identifier doi:10.20334/2404-M. The publication prepared by LSMU professors has features of a terminology dictionary. Its preface states: “<...> this teaching book is not an exemplary dictionary of cardiology terms. It does not follow the strict requirements of dictionary lexicographic technique” (p. V). The publication includes terms and terminological phrases from cardiology and related fields of medicine, as well as biology, genetics, informatics, medical statistics, medical law, psychology, and education. The teaching book is intended primarily for medical residents who read English-language literature or travel abroad for internships or conferences. Some terms are briefly explained. Corrections of non-standard terms and synonyms are included. Some terms are accented. Headwords are arranged alphabetically by their English forms, with Lithuanian equivalents alongside them. An attempt has been made to group the material by topic; some terms are presented in clusters. The publication has terminological shortcomings. This publication is not called a dictionary, although it could be considered one. It explains phobias, described in the book’s annotation as obsessive states of fear that affect a person in certain situations and cause autonomic disorders. The terms denoting phobias are arranged alphabetically. Each term is accompanied by a definition and, sometimes, a more detailed explanation. Synonyms are included for some terms. The origins of the terms are indicated. The introduction explains what fear and phobia are, presents classifications of phobias proposed by several authors, briefly outlines the results of a 2017 study of fears among children and adults, and includes advice from psychologist Aušra Pundzevičienė on how to live with fears.
