Jonas Paulauskas was born on January 9, 1923 in Jurbarkas. He studied at Jurbarko gimnazija. He was a good mathematician in high school, and at Kaunas University* he chose to study Lithuanian language (surprising the whole town), because there was a great lack of specialists. Paulauskas’s main and only place of work is the Lithuanian Language (and Literature) Institute, the editorship of the Dictionary. It was accepted by Professor J. Balčikonis himself. He checked the dialect, the pronunciation (the professor liked it very much), a little mumbled about the hasty handwriting, but that was not an obstacle. When the future linguist sat down at the table in the room of the Dictionaries Sector on August 15, 1950, he sat there for many years. He patiently learned the tricks of lexicography, well understood the change in the profile of the Great Lithuanian Dictionary (lKŽ). The first works of the young lexicographer were the proofreading of the 3rd volume of the Lithuanian Lexicon, trips to the Dzūkų dialects – to study them for the Lithuanian Language Atlas and to collect words for the next volumes of the Lithuanian Lexicon. After looking around and getting used to his workplace, and seeing that there was encouragement to be interested in science, he chose the difficult dissertation topic “Functions of verb prepositions in contemporary Lithuanian literary language”. The dissertation defense was calm, manly, the opponents did not raise theoretical errors – they argued only about the correctness of some sentences – and unanimously recognized the degree of candidate of philological sciences (now – doctorate). The dissertation was published in 1958 in Volume III of Literature and Language, and was used (with minor corrections) in Volume II of the Academic Grammar of the Lithuanian Language, published in 1971. and now lexicographers are based on this work, learning to write dictionaries, descriptions of dialects. J. Paulauskas was the only dictionary writer who worked on all the volumes of the LKŽ: he wrote the text and later edited them. He was particularly devoted to checking the data of the most important sources of this multifaceted work – dialects and ancient writings. In his opinion, the value of the Dictionary should be determined by the accuracy of the material, its scientific presentation, and whether the first sentences of important sources or the exclamations that determine the ideas of socialism and people’s consciousness will be in the word nest, is not important. What is certain is that people will choose and everything will work out by itself. This is the case – in later volumes of lKŻ the Soviet ideology decreased. In addition to his regular work at the Lithuanian-English Dictionary and the intended preparation of a dictionary of Lithuanian phraseologisms, J. Paulauskas wrote and published in the press (also in Latvia and other countries) many articles on language culture, especially law, and various terminological issues. The first translation of the book into the Lithuanian language was published in 1977. The interest was huge – the dictionary received as many as 20 reviews (in Latvia, Russia, Germany). The work continued, the dictionary was constantly improved, and more dictionary writers were added. For Phraseology Dictionary (prepared with collaborators) (2001) was awarded the Lithuanian Republic Science Prize. This dictionary is now the favorite book of Lithuanian lexicographers. V. Due to the change of staff in the Dictionaries Department, the editing of the last volumes of lKŽ had to stop. We talked with J. Paulauskas about what to do – whether to stop the work when there are both funds and a lot of public attention. I remember as today: “Let’s take some of the work, contribute more, take home to edit”. That’s what we did, volume XViii came out on time, no one even noticed such a disturbance. Jonas Paulauskas died on 12 December 2003 in Vilnius. His faithful wife, the famous linguist bee Aldona Paulauskienė, dedicated her whole life to protect and protect her Man from household chores, created all the conditions for him to work in language science bars.
