K. Garšva. Onomastics works of Marija Razmukaite 297 KAZIMIERAS GARŠVA Institute of Lithuanian Language Mariah Carey WORKS OF ONOMASTICS When Algirdas Sabaliauskas prints the third volume of the History of the Lithuanian Language, after Maria Razmukaite’s presentation he will refer to the literature: Norkaitienė M. I’m glad to see my colleague counting the years of her work (Gimtoji kalba 3, 2001). And another source may be this article. The great chronicler, apparently, will not mention that once our tables stood opposite each other, and behind the wall M. Razmukaitė looked through the chestnut trees at Peter Paul’s Church (this is clearly visible on the third floor) and kept writing about real words – place names, surnames and a little about dialects. Since she was born on April 1, congratulations come at different times. Vytautas Ambrazas, Algirdas Sabaliauskas, Zigmantas Zinkevičius succeeded in attracting their children to the Lithuanian Language Institute, and Pranas Razmukas1 was probably the only one whose Institute was represented by two daughters – Bi1 and Bi2. His father was from Žasliai, his grandfather was from Nocia parish. In 1926, Pranas, eighteen years old, began to assist J. Basanavičius and until 1994 he officially worked at the Institute. Since the Lithuanian Scientific Society is the founder of the Institute, it can be said that P. Razmukas is the longest (68 years) person who has worked and protected the Institute. 298 LANGUAGE CULTURE | 84 Ruth and Mary. Until 2004, the family lived in the auxiliary building of the Institute – Antakalnio g. 6-6, so the connection with the Institute was closer than the employees who lived there. Those who have been in contact with Pranas Razmukas remember how he respected Jonas Basanavičius, whose unofficial secretary he was, and other heroes of the nation, how he protected their relics and the Institute itself. He wrote about this in his memoirs: “While working in such an honourable Institution as the LMD [Lithuanian Science Society], next to the Patriarch of the Lithuanian nation, Dr. J. Basanavičius, and later in the continuation of that Institution – the Institute of Lithuanian Language and Literature, during the most turbulent period in world history, I loved and defended the Institution, because I believed, and I am one hundred percent convinced of this, that it is necessary for the whole of Lithuania as the only Institution of Lithuanian Studies in the world, as a worldwide centre of Lithuanian Studies, significant for the whole of humanity.”2 Marija Institute was one of the few true Vilnius residents, and after graduating from Vilnius University in 1965, she worked there for 45 years. After a beautiful period of time – 33 years – he defended his doctoral dissertation “Lithuanian subordinate oikonimai”. Now she is the senior specialist of the nomenclature, long and patiently working in the Institute with Aleksandr Vanagas, Vitalija Macijauskienė, and should write valuable memories of the collection and research of the nomenclature herself. M. Razmukaitė is the author or co-author of nine scientific works: Lithuanian Language Atlas (vol. 1, 1977), Lithuanian Surname Dictionary (vol. 1, 2, 1985, 1989; with A. Vanagas and V. Maciejauskienė – for it she was awarded the Lithuanian Republic’s Science Prize in 1993), Pronoun Pronunciation Dictionary (1994; with Vytautas Vitkauskas), Lithuanian Prepositional Oikonyms (1998; doctoral dissertation with summary), Lithuanian Traditional Place Names (2002; with Aiste Pangonyte), Pronoun Dictionary (2002; with Aldonas Pupkis), Lithuanian Place Names Dictionary (vol. M. Razmukaitė wrote about 70 scientific articles (mostly on Lithuanian place names). Half of them have been published in the periodicals of the Lithuanian Language Institute – 27 articles in Kalbos kultūroje, 5 articles in Lithuanian Linguistics Issues, as well as in the works of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, Lituanistica, four international journals, two collections of foreign scientific articles. Language culture is M. Razmukaite’s great love, and most of her articles have been published here (beginning in 1967 and ending in 2009). Three of the magazine’s notebooks (Nos. 38, 63, 76) contain two of her articles each. 2 Razmukas P. Prisiminimai (manuscript). Library of Congress. K. Garšva. 299 Regional publications on Gaidė and Rimšė, Kernavė, Dubingi, Gervėčiai, Mažoji Lietuva, Kupiškis, Obeliai and Kriaunas, Rozalima, Lygumai, Raguva, Veliuona, Viduklė, Lyda region, Seredžiai, Kvėdarna, Šilalė, Papilė, Jiezna, Stakliškiai, Laukuva, Paupis (the books are listed in the order in which they were published) are also related to the consolidation of language norms. There are 21 such collections in total. And it is not necessary to assume that the articles printed in those collections of articles are far from science. Sometimes they can be more scientific and valuable to science than articles published in prestigious journals. In the regional publications of Versmė publishing house about Lithuanian villages, published since 1994, scientific articles are peer-reviewed and should not be called popular. Capital works, research, standardization and popularization of the nomenclature, regional publications, collection of language facts in expeditions were and are very important for Lithuania. The dictionaries, of which M. Razmukaitė is a co-author, are indispensable for common language users who want to present the correct forms of place names and surnames and to pronounce them correctly. Users of the state language cannot do without the standardized traditional place names of Gudija, Karaliaučius region, Latvia and Poland, which M. Razmukaitė deserves most of all in collecting and establishing authentic forms. MAIN PUBLICATIONS OF MARIJA RAZMUKAITĖ 1. Language Atlas of Lithuania 1. 1977, pp. 40–41, 82–86. No. 6, 29–32.
