BENDRINĖ KALBA | 87 (2014) www.bendrinekalba.lt ISSN 2351-7204 CONTEMPORARY LANGUAGE STUDIES AND PROBLEMS 21st Jon Jablonskis Conference On 3 October 2014, the 21st Jon Jablonskis Conference was held at Vilnius University. As every year, the conference was organized by the General Language Department of the Lithuanian Language Institute together with the Department of Lithuanian Language of Vilnius University. This year’s conference Studies and Problems of Contemporary Language is devoted to research and problems in the fields of phonetics, lexis, grammar, syntax, stylistics and rhetoric, as well as the change of norms in contemporary language. The conference was attended by speakers from various Lithuanian and foreign institutions. It reads twenty-seven reports. The dean of the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University greeted the conference participants and speakers. The introductory speech was given by the Lithuanian Language Head of the Department of Lithuanian Institute Language and the Faculty of Philology Rita Miliūnaitė Professor, of Vilnius University Department of Tuvan Language Regina KoženiausKienė. In the plenary session, foreign scientists presented their papers. ALEKSEJUS ANDRONOVAS from St. Petersburg University presented the first presentation Phonology as a (non)separate science. The concept of phonology by Nikolajus Trubeckojus, Aleksas Girdenis and other linguists was discussed. JERZY BARTMIŃSKI from the Institute of Polish Philology spoke about style as a sign of language in his presentation Style as a Sign and Derivation. In her presentation Guidelines for Estonian language policy in the context of the Baltic States, BIRUTĖ KLAAS-LANG from the University of Tartu, Estonia, examined how to ensure the survival and development of the Estonian language and compared the situation of Estonian and Lithuanian languages. LINDA LAUZE from the University of Liepaja presented the final plenary session report “Izteikumu pāri sarunas”. The afternoon conference was divided into four sections. In the first section, the first presentation “Plant-based characters names in contemporary Lithuanian children’s prose” was read by AURELIJA GRITĖNIENĖ, senior researcher of the Lithuanian Language Institute. The report deals with the conversion of generic words into proper names; also examines the forms and formants of character names, presents the most common lexems in reference words, discusses the function of such names in fictional texts. BIRUTĖ GUDELIENĖ, junior researcher at the Lithuanian Language Institute, in her presentation Problems of Biblical Names Normization in Simon Daukanto and Simon Stanevičius’ translation of Espistome Historiae Sacrae and now discussed the nature of Biblical Names Normization by each author, compared their translations and found that S. Stanevičius provided more Lithuanian-like real names. JOLITA URBANAVIČIENĖ, Senior Research Fellow of the Lithuanian Language Institute, spoke about the peculiarities of noun pronunciation in her presentation Peculiarities of noun pronunciation in Vilnius city spoken language. She presented the statistically evaluated results of the project “Vilnius language II: city and language diversity” carried out by the Lithuanian Language Institute, compared the data of different informants (by age, gender, education), analyzed the effect of dialects and Slavic languages on the pronunciation of Vilnius residents. JUSTINA LIAUKSMINIENĖ, Vilnius University assistant, presented the pragmatization of mental verbs in her presentation Pragmatization of mental verbs in Lithuanian language to think, think, know, understand. The paper discusses which forms of mental verbs function as epistemic and which as pragmatic indicators and what their meanings emerge in the language of fiction. ANTANAS KETURAKIS, assistant professor of Vilnius University, read a presentation on the Italian designative article The semantic map of the Italian designative article. In his presentation “Analysis of the vocabulary of the public statements of the presidents and presidential candidates of Lithuania and France after the announcement of the election results (1993-2009)”, lecturer of the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University MIROSLAV STASILO talked about the place of the word in creating the image of contemporary politicians. In the second section, the first presentation Change of General Language Norms: Once again about avoidable language phenomena was read by RITA MILIŪNAITĖ, Senior Research Fellow of the Lithuanian Language Institute. The report examines the theoretical basis for the designation of one of the most frequently discussed evaluation levels – “avoidable” – and the practical aspects of its application. The report attempted to show that the degree of evaluation “avoidable” helps to maintain the balance of the functioning of the general language norms, mitigating the sometimes arising contradictions between the principles of systemicity and purposefulness or smoothing out the inequalities of the internal development of the language system itself. About major language errors in the report Is the list of major language errors still relevant? ERIKA RIMKUTĖ, associate professor of Vytautas Magnus University, spoke about the case of Vertinis. She examined one of the parts of the list of Great Language Errors – unpresentable values and their use in the text of Contemporary Lithuanian Language. In the presentation Ortoepijas problēmjautājumi Latviešu valodas gramatikā (2013) a researcher from the University of Liepaja, Latvia, DZINTRA ŠULCE examined the problems of orthopedy in Latvian grammar. The norms of word pronunciation, vowel and consonant pronunciation were discussed, problematic cases of prepositional pronunciation were discussed. In her presentation “The language of blogs of upper-class students” AURELIJA TAMULIONIENĖ, a researcher at the Lithuanian Language Institute, gave an overview of blogs of upper-class students, their language, and discussed in more detail one aspect of blog language – English words. RASUOLĖ VLADARSKIENĖ, Senior Research Fellow of the Lithuanian Language Institute, discussed the reasons for the widespread use of the preposition due to construction in administrative language, the relationship with competitors, and examined problematic cases of usage. In this section, the last presentation Zinātniskā raksta pavadteksti latviešu un lietuviešu philologist rakstu krājumos was read by DIĀNA LAIVENIECE, a researcher from the University of Liepaja, Latvia. In the third section, the first presentation, Innovations in experimental prosody research: analysis of northern Žemaitijos Telšiai whims, was read by Vilnius University researcher EVALDAS ŠVAAGERIS, who discussed several methods of data analysis (graphic representation, comparison) and the statistical Voldo-Volfovic criterion, which has not been used in Lithuanian experimental works so far. In the presentation Secondary predicates in positional constructions, doctoral student BENITA RIAUBIENĖ of the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University discussed positional constructions in Lithuanian language such as lies high-earned, reads upright, fell kniubsčias and so on. LAURA VILKAITĖ from the University of Nottingham, UK, presented the paper Formulaic Nature of Language: Is It Language Specific?, in which she compared English and Lithuanian word combinations and word sequences, and their research methodologies. ANITA HELVIGA, a researcher from the University of Liepaja in Latvia, read the paper Terminological synonymy of native and borrowed words in literary studies. Estonian student text corpus EMMA was presented by KADRI SÕRMUS. Research and problems of modern language | 3 ja introduced three technologies that improve literacy: dimple error correction, text rewriting method and blind text typing. In the fourth section, REGINA KOŽENIAUSKIENĖ, professor of the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University, presented the paper Expanded Metaphor as a Means of Argumentation in the Media. One of the types of metaphor was discussed – expanded metaphor, i.e. when the figurative transfer of the meaning of the same word is not one-time, but is developed throughout the entire article. IRENA SMETONIENĖ, associate professor of the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University, discussed advertising texts in her presentation on the function of synecdoche in advertising texts. She talked about synecdoche, its types, possibilities in advertising. DIANA LIEPINYTĖ-KYTRIENĖ, PhD student of the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University, in her presentation “Concept and functions of opinion leaders” emphasized that one of the main functions of an opinion leader is to influence the target audience and described in detail the stages of this function. The presentation “The Use of Pertars in the Verbal Lithuanian Language” was read by Vytautas Magnus University Associate Professor LAURA KAMANDULYTĖ-MERFELDIENĖ and Vytautas Magnus University Student Parliament member POVILAS GODLIAUSKAS. The peculiarities of the use of consonants in the verbal Lithuanian language are presented, fifty-two different consonants recorded in the verbal Lithuanian language text are analyzed. SIMONA AMANKEVIČIŪTĖ, PhD student of Vilnius University, Kaunas Faculty of Humanities, presented the paper Transformation of precedent phenomena in press headlines, in which she reviewed the theory of precedent phenomena and its main concepts, defined its relationship with the theory of intertextuality and discourse analysis.
