Doi: doi.org/10.35321/bkalba.2023.96.13 28th taRPnational Scientific Conference of John JabLonskis LANGUAGE AND TIME: REPRESENTATIONS OF PERSONS, GENERATIONS AND SOCIETIES IN LANGUAGE The Research Center for Common Language of the Lithuanian Language Institute and the Department of Lithuanian Language of the Institute of Applied Linguistics of the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University invited everyone to the traditional scientific conference on Jono Jablonskio, which was held at the Lithuanian Language Institute on 21–22 September 2023. This year’s 28th jon jablonskis conference was interdisciplinary. The lectures were read by linguists, literary scholars and historians. Audiences and participants from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Ukraine attended the international interdisciplinary conference and listened to 48 presentations, read in the plenary, closing sessions and 9 sections. The director of the Lithuanian Language Institute (Lki), Dr. Albina Auksoriutė, greeted the audience and participants who gathered at the conference. Pro-Dean of the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University Gintarė Judžentytė-Šinkūnienė also gave a greeting, wishing further creative work. After the opening ceremony and welcome speeches, the first day of the conference began with a plenary session, in which three invited speakers read their presentations and shared their experiences: Prof. Dr. in Druviete (University of Latvia), Prof. Dr. Birute klaas-Lang (Tartu University), Prof. Dr. Igor Koroliov (Kyiv Taras Shevchenko National University, Ukraine). i. Druvietė read a presentation on Baltic languages in the new era of multilingualism. It raised the question of whether language policy guidelines should be revised and drew attention to the challenges facing language policy makers in Latvia and Lithuania. The plenary session was continued by b. klaas-Lang, who devoted her presentation to language policy at the university

According to the speaker, the media and art are constructing a multimodal, transtextual image of the refugee crisis, linked to dynamic meaning creation. further work and scientific discussion took place in sections. Danguolė mikulėnienė (Lki) opened the section dedicated to the construction of reality and language with a presentation on post-war Lithuanian linguistics. The speaker spoke about the different degrees of ideologization of post-colonial linguistic publications, expressed by certain linguistic clichés, and pointed out that even attempts were made to simplify the meaning of the word by giving it a political content. The presentation of aurelija gritėnienė (Lki) was devoted to the discussion of the image of Lithuania in the text of the ideological narrative of modern identity. By analyzing examples of Soviet publicistics, the researcher revealed how the picture of the good, happy life of people of the time was created. Dangiras Mačiulis (Institute of Lithuanian History) talked about what motivated the Lithuanianization of surnames campaigns in interwar Lithuania, what role the authorities played in the Lithuanianization of surnames and what was the role of the political and cultural elite in the surname becoming a proof of national identity. aušra martišiūtė-Linartienė (Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore), discussing the creation of the Lithuanian world in Aušra, concluded this session. The section dedicated to the linguistic and cultural integration of immigrants and national minorities was opened by Laura vilkaitė-Lozdienė (vu) with a presentation on easy-to-understand language. Asking whether easy-to-understand language is necessary for all language users and what is the difference between easy-to-understand language and easy-to-understand language, the speaker presented the results of the public and target group survey, carried out by Vilnius University together with international partners in 2020-2022 under the Perlsi project. It investigated how much and in what situations respondents say they encounter difficulties in understanding the information they need. angelica Peccini (vu) discussed how Lithuanianness is understood by immigrants. Based on the results of a socio-linguistic survey of 20 adults who came to Lithuania from different countries of the world, she said that for them Lithuanianness means strong roots in Lithuania, traditions and common values, preservation of freedom and,

The presentation was read remotely by yevheniia starodub and maria inmaculada De Potestad (Kaunas University of Technology). They presented how Venezuelans living in Lithuania evaluate the Lithuanian language teaching program for their linguistic integration in Lithuania and discussed the problems of linguistic integration they have encountered in Lithuania. the other two reports of this section were devoted to the language and identity of national minorities in schools. aurelija tamulionienė (Lki) drew attention to the expression of personal identity in language. After presenting the results of the research conducted in 2021-2022, in which grades 3-8 pupils studying in national minority (Polish and Russian) schools in Lithuania participated, the speaker discussed the linguistic attitudes of pupils regarding the use of the Lithuanian language in various communication situations, as well as the relationship between the motivation for learning the Lithuanian language and the linguistic attitudes and drew attention to the influence of the family, society and school in shaping the pupils’ attitudes regarding the value of the Lithuanian language. The topic of teaching in national minority schools was continued by sonata vaičiakauskienė (Lki) with a presentation on Lithuanian language teaching problems faced by Lithuanian teachers working in national minority schools. Based on the results of the teacher questionnaire for the 2021-2022 school year, the speaker said that the biggest problem for pupils learning Lithuanian is still insufficient vocabulary – their vocabulary resources are extremely poor, and perhaps the biggest challenge for teachers is that pupils lack motivation to learn Lithuanian. The afternoon of the first day of the conference also continued in two sections. in the section dedicated to media language: propaganda, myths and reality, the first presentation was read by andrejs veisbergs (University of Latvia). He discussed fascism and liberalism in the political narrative by examining the Latvian, Russian and English vocabulary used in propaganda. After that, Agnė Aleksaitė (Lki) discussed the stylistic aspect of 44 comments on the Russian-Ukrainian war published by Rimvydas Valatka in 2022. 240 common language | 96 revealed how the image of people with disabilities is created and what it is in the Latvian media. Linda Lauze (University of Liepaja) concluded the session with a presentation on the quality of Latvian language in social media (Facebook, Twitter). In the second afternoon section, entitled Development of Language and Society, Jurgita Venckienė (Lki) read a report on the language of the first periodical for all Lithuanians Aušra („auszra“) – its dialect and orthography. The speaker revealed that the language of the publication was unstable due to changing personal preferences of the editors. Laura kamandulytėmerfeldienė (Vytautas Didysis University, vDu) discussed the lexical characteristics of undeveloped language of 5-6 year old children, told that children with undeveloped language performed statistically significantly worse in the tasks of understanding nouns and verbs, as well as in the tasks of producing nouns and verbs. Ramunė Čičirkaitė (Lki), comparing the concept of literacy in Soviet and current Lithuanian as a mother tongue education programs and textbooks for primary school, came to the conclusion that literacy is perceived as a static and unchanging category. According to the speaker, both the Soviet and the current period of Lithuanian as a mother tongue education programs and textbooks are hardly based on real spoken language. Finally, vija Požarnova (Latvian Language Institute), based on the data of an anonymous online sociolinguistic survey of 298 respondents, comparing the experience of the European Union and the Republic of India, discussed remotely the linguistic beliefs of users related to the understanding of language value. According to the rapporteur, while the beliefs of European respondents reveal a whole kaleidoscope of opinions, the inhabitants of smaller states and countries tend to value language more in terms of its cultural and identity aspects. After reading all 20 presentations of the first day and after discussions in the afternoon sections, the conference organizers invited foreign guests to a tour of the palace. discussions took place also in separate sections. There were five of them that day. The sessions on language policy and language ideology, interaction of language variants, language and identity, language layers (from audio to text) were held in the afternoon, while the session on the semantic language layer in contemporary society took the whole day. The morning section on language policy and language ideology was opened by Rita miliūnaitė (Lki) with a presentation on the concept of language correctness and functioning in the State Language Act. it revealed the relationship of language correctness and functionality with various areas of public language use and

Discussing the development of Lithuanian language education policy from the restoration of the Lithuanian state to the Soviet occupation and from the restoration of independence to the present day, nida Poderienė (Lki) examined how Lithuanian and other language education policy reflects ideologies affecting education, which shape the content of Lithuanian language as an object of teaching and learning, values and state identity, and determine sociocultural changes in society. The speaker evaluated the changes in language education policy established over the past few years and mentioned trends in Lithuanian language education policy. Violeta Meiliūnaitė (Lki)’s presentation was dedicated to the paradox of language “experts”: while declaring that Lithuanian is a value to be preserved and cherished, the aim is to change its structure according to the model of other, essentially completely foreign, languages. The speaker explained how the contradiction between language and speakers is formed in contemporary Lithuanian society, how it is realized in practice, and sought answers on how to eliminate the paradox when fighting against the values of one’s own – against the Lithuanian language. Kazimieras Garšva (Lki) concluded this section with a presentation on language policy and self-regulation, focusing on the transliteration of real words from foreign languages into Lithuanian. In the section on interaction of language variants, nijolė tuomienė (Lki) revealed the multi-layered identity layer of the inhabitants of South-East Lithuania. she talked about when and why the identity line is drawn between the “local” and “non-local” inhabitants of South-East Lithuania, what language the “locals” use here. Dovilė tamulaitienė (Lki), based on the material of the questionnaires of the names of the land, discussed what phonetic and morphological features of the place names were considered dialects by the teachers and foresters who filled out the questionnaires in the 1930s, what principles they applied when writing the names of places in common language and what reasons could have led to their choice. simona vyniautaitė (Lki), who analyzed audio recordings from 2011–2019, persuaded by inhabitants of Skuodas, Mosedis, Telsiai, Plungė and Rietava, using dynamic dialectology and perceptive dialectology methods, presented the dialectal differentiation of Northern Žemaites from the point of view of representatives of the Kretingos and Telšiai sub-regions. The speaker revealed that the presenters noticed dialectal characteristics of lexicon and phonetics. asta Leskauskaitė (Lki) concluded this session with a presentation on the snakes of Grasses, Ferns and Coots. Using dialectometry method, she proved, to which regiolects these transitional schnecks can be assigned according to certain phonetic, morphological and other characteristics.

Lygindama leksikografinius anglų, rusų ir lietuvių kalbų šaltinius, pranešėja parodė, kaip kinta lietuvių kalbos veiksmažodžio spekuliuoti reikšmės ir kas pokyčiui turi lexicography, revealed the diversity of the nomination and motivation of the names of chicken, chicken, cock not only from the onomastological, semantic, but also ethnolinguistic aspect. later silvia Papaurėlytė-klovienė (Lki), based on the results of the association experiment, in which almost 300 students from Šiauliai and Vilnius participated, spoke about the very limited field of associations of the word dukra, which provides valuable information about the content of the concept DukRa in the Lithuanian language worldview. this morning session was concluded by a message read from a distance. svitlana Hrycenko (ktšnu) presented the linguistic-cultural component of Ukrainian equivalents in a bilingual Lithuanian-Ukrainian dictionary. According to the speaker, the dictionary compilers, emphasizing the specificity of the linguistic-cultural component of the Ukrainian language, focus on the statics and dynamics of the Ukrainian language. During the break of the morning sessions, two panel presentations were presented. The presentation by inese indričāne and solveiga Čeirāne (Lu Lki) was dedicated to the quality of Latvian language obstruents, while the presentation by justina mandravickaitė, Danguolė kalinauskaitė, Danguolė kotryna kapkan and eglė kankevičiūtė (vDu) was the first to present the results of a project aimed at developing a methodology for the automatic simplification of administrative texts in Lithuanian. In the afternoon, the session dedicated to the semantic level of language in contemporary society was continued by Evija Lipartė. She presented the linguistic means and aspects of the conceptual metaphor Man – Green (food), which reveals dehumanization. later, based on a survey of Latvian translators working in the European Union institutions and in the local Latvian market, Evelina Kirsakmene (University of Latvia) discussed the misinterpretation of idioms in translations from English, French into Latvian. The most extensive session of the conference was concluded by veslava Čižik-Prokaševa (Lki). based on examples from the 365 Contemporary Lithuanian Textbook, she discussed the image of Latvian, which, according to the speaker, is not comprehensive and completely clear. In the Poetical section, which dealt with the issues of various consonants of the language, jolita urbanavičienė (Lki) presented a perceptive study of

According to the speaker, palatalization, adjacent vowels and the gender of the narrator are factors that influence the perception of sonatas. Larysa taranenko (Igor Sikorsky Polytechnic Institute of the Ukrainian National Technical University in Kyiv, hereinafter – untu kisPi) read the presentation remotely. based on 42 English folk legends about King Arthur, she spoke about the prosody of legends and their characteristics, which can influence the subconscious of the addressee and convey the emotional and pragmatic load of the text. The speaker emphasized that falling rather than rising tones in legends create favourable conditions for the recipients to better understand what they heard, and the isochronic pronunciation of adjacent intonational groups ensures the effect of the legend on the subconscious. The communications were continued remotely by olha isniuk (untu kisPi). based on prohibitive statements collected from 115 fragments of the situational comedy The Nanny, she described the language means by which speakers of different sociocultural groups express the prohibitive language act in English. The rapporteur has shown that the middle and lower sociocultural strata, unlike the high sociocultural strata, tend to insure directly. Maria Boichenko (untu kisPi) presented communication strategies and hierarchical complexes of verbal and non-verbal means, which help the charismatic speaker in invariant communication situations to maximize the pragmatic potential of language: to convey his vision and message to the audience, to influence it, to establish an emotional connection with the audience. In this section, among the remotely read reports, the report of a group of scientists – Jurgis Pakeris (vu), Virginijus Dadurkevičius (vDu) and Agnė Navickaitė-Klišauskienė (vu) – on productivity of work was read live. Referring to the data of the combined textbook of Lithuanian language and speaking about the realized, potential and development productivity, among other verb constructions, the speakers paid special attention to the names of Lithuanian language actors with suffixes -toj-, -ėir -ik-. The afternoon section Language and Identity was opened by Daiva aliūkaitė (vu) and aida Čižikaitė (Lithuanian University of Health Sciences). based on the methodology of perceptive dialectology and 180 students of non-humanities studies profile linguistic attitudes and three mulų percepcijos duomenimis, kalbėjo apie tai, ar (kaip) didmiestis keičia tarmiškumo vaizdinius. 244 benDRinė kaLba | 96 correlation with the development of the settlement infrastructure and pointed out that the linguistic change is influenced not only by the size or stability of the southern Samogitian Raseiniškiai communities, but also by the socio-cultural, socio-economic environment of the residential area, the reasons for the mobility of communities. later aidas gudaitis (Lki) read a report on the competition of Polish and Lithuanian languages in the 20th century BC–21st century BC. The speaker presented the results of a quantitative study of more than 4,300 grave inscriptions in the Dieveniškiai district and stated that the prestige of the Lithuanian language in the Dieveniškiai district gradually increased in the early 20th century and especially accelerated after 1990 – then the percentage of grave inscriptions in Lithuanian language increased considerably. Recently, it has increased to more than 30%. Based on dialectal material, Žydrūnas šidlauskas (Lki) introduced the assembled with the reconstructed Priedžukis area and presented the dialectal specificity and dynamics of the flooded Nemunas valley, the current Kaunas lake bottom. Danutė valentukevičienė (Lki) concluded this section with a presentation on Varena geology. Based on the identity model of Jérôme-Frédéric Josserand and the research material collected through semi-structured interviews with 47 three-generation speakers, the speaker discussed the changing (present) and baseline (collective) identity of South Highland dialect users in the Varena geolect zone and concluded that the identity of dialect users is one of the most important conditions for the vitality of South Highland dialect. On the second day of the conference, 28 papers were read live or remotely. The closing session brought together all the participants from the individual sections, where the invited guest dr. małgorzata kasner (Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences) spoke about the main narratives (identity, heritage and memory) of Lukiškių Square, which make up the social world of Lukiškių Square. Afterwards, there was a very interesting discussion, which caught the attention of the listeners for a long time, moderated by nida Poderienė, entitled Today’s reality-shaping language: connections, differences, trends, in which participated dr. małgorzata kasner, prof. dr. aušra martišiūtė-Linartienė, habil. dr.
