LITHUANIAN INSCRIP TIONS IN A COPY OF "KNYGA NOBAZNYSTES” Summary The article analyzes the handwritten text of two prayers found in a copy of "Knyga nobaznystes” kept in the M. Mažvydas Library in Vilnius. It was established that the inscription had been made by an evangelical reformist priest, a native of the district of Biržai, who worked in Kelme. Texts written by the same person can be found in the collection of manuscripts of the reformists of Kelme, at the library of Warszaw University. These texts are supposed to have been copied out of some old prayer book either of the end of the 18th or the begining of the 19th century. This text is written in the East High Lithuanian dialect. The linguistc peculiarities of the Birzai region can be seen easily. The facts presented show that the East High Lithuanian dialect played a much more important role in the writtings of the reformists than it was supposed before. In May-June 1992 I worked in the library and archive of the Slavist and Baltist T. Torbiornsson *, located in the Department of Slavic Studies at the University of Lund (Sweden). There I met a former employee of this department, Georgas Jaugelis, who in one conversation said that he had copied four letters from K. Böge to T. Torbiornsson and intended to publish them. The originals of the letters in Russian, along with other correspondence and manuscripts, were kept for some time in the archives of T. Toibiornsson. G. Jaugelis typed the letters, arranged the diacritical marks, moved the underlines. Only the letter b, which was not in the typewriter, and the Latin letter 4 of some Russian words remained unwritten. The proofreading was not completed due to illness, which forced G. Jadaug to bed for a short time. When I returned from the hospital, it turned out that the originals of the letters had disappeared somewhere (after careful searching the archives of T. Torbiornsson and the Manuscript Catalogue of the Lund University Library, I was unable to find them). As the originals did not appear, the letters remained unfinished and unpublished. Although the transcripts of the letters were not fully prepared for publication, they can be trusted (about one more dubious thing, see the notes). G. Jaugelis was regarded as one of the best proofreaders and editors of the Slavistics Institute’s publications, and he has also prepared an exemplary collection of letters from Russian writers to Lund Slavists (see Slavica Lundensia, 1973, Vol. 1, pp. 115—140; 1974, Vol. 2, pp. 7—116). Torbiornsson to K. Buga (code D 841), which allow us to roughly reconstruct the correspondence between these two linguists. In the first letter (04.03.1923) in German the Swedish scholar writes how difficult it is to get Lithuanian books in Uppsala; asks to specify a trader in Kaunas. A list of five publications is attached on a separate page. K. Būga replied to this letter very quickly — on March 15. He was pleased to be able to help buy Lithuanian books, and invited me to write for the magazine "Tauta i žodis". Torbiornsson replies to K. Böge’s letter in Russian on 21 March. Dékoja for sent books, asks for new ones. He wrote after reading mainly Lithuanian fairy tales, a translation of the New Testament, and K. Donelaitis. Many of the words in the books are not in the dictionaries. On April 14, he sends a postcard. In the letter, K. Būga apologizes for the long silence related to the writing of the dictionary. This time the reply is slightly delayed by T. Torbiérnsson — his letter is dated June 23. K. Buga could have replied to this letter at best at the very end of June, so the date of the third letter of Buga, which is the reply (June 2), is apparently a circumvention (see Explanations). The fourth letter of K. Boge — a postcard — was written on February 6, 1924. It informs about the dispatch of the first notebook of the "Dictionary of Lithuanian Language", for which T. Torbiornsson thanks in a letter of February 14. Later (May 11) T. Torbiornsson also wrote a postcard. The letters of K. Buga are published here in the current Russian spelling, arranged chronologically, numbered. One of them (the fourth) is written on the second side of the card. Bold font is used for the underlined words in the text, and italic for the examples that Būga likes to underline (even with more than one dash).
