LITHUANIAN LEXICOLOGY QUESTIONS XXXV (1995) LITHUANIAN LEXICOLOGY STUDIES From the living language From the Dialects Aus der Volkssprache Kazimieras PAKALKA WORDS OF VERB DICENDI OF MULTIPLE DICENT SPEECH Daugėliškio dialect belongs to the eastern Highlands (Izukai (Vilnius people). The dialect is significant in all respects for the study of Lithuanian language, since it has evolved with little influence from the common language. According to Z. Zinkevičius, the eastern borders are best suited for studying the laws of language interaction, where there are various phases of language mixing and disappearance (Zinkevičius 1966: 29). The phonetics and morphology of Daugėliškio dialect has been briefly described by Vilnius University graduate Mykolas Šuminas in his diploma thesis (1951). The lexicon of this dialect has not been examined separately so far. The academic "Dictionary of Lithuanian Language" from the first volume has included a considerable number of words from Daugėliškis and neighboring parishes. Since 1948, the author of these lines has submitted about 14 thousand sheets with native dialect words and examples of their use to the dictionary. Nowadays Daugėliškio dialect, like other dialects of Vilnius region, is rapidly disappearing, the vocabulary of people is impoverishing. Only the older generation speaks it. We have chosen one of the important layers of vocabulary—speaking verbs. We consider them such verbs, which we say to express thoughts, feelings, experiences, opinions. Until now, no one has examined the speaking verbs of other Lithuanian dialects in greater detail. One of the first to present even 65 speech verbs was A. Juška (Juška 1922: 17—18). The first systematic grouping of Lithuanian speaking synonyms was made by the lexicographer A. Lyberis (Lyberis 1980: 164—166). A. Lybers did not specify the geography of synonyms and did not include the borrowed ones at all. A coherent system of thematic groups of Lithuanian language was laid out by J. Paulauskas in "Systematic Dictionary of Lithuanian Language- ". 1 Daugėliškis is located 9 km east of Ignalina, on the Svenčioniai-Vidžiai road. In the autumn of 1939, when the Soviet Union occupied Vilnius, Daugėliškis and a large part of the parish were assigned to Belarus. In the northeast corner of this parish was then established the Gedžiūnėlių parish. Part of our material was taken from the people of the village of Juodalaukis, my parents. Historically, the Black Aim represents the dialect of the older Daugėliškio parish. 205 Here is a dictionary of verbs in the Daugėliškio dialect in alphabetical order. Examples of dialects are transposed into the common language, retaining morphological features. Verbs are presented as in the "Lithuanian language dictionary- ", only with minor transitivity. The heading verb is conjugated. However, in illustrative sentences, these verbs are not pronounced everywhere. For more commonly used verbs, we give only a minimum and more typical illustration from our extensive collection. We do not write any abbreviation to our own written sentences, but to sentences taken from the printed volumes of the "Lithuanian language dictionary" we write the abbreviation LKŽ, to sentences taken from the dictionary manuscripts and the repetition library, we write the abbreviation LKŽ K.
