XXXVI (1996) „LITHUANIAN LANGUAGE: RESEARCHERS AND STUDIES CHRONICLE OF THE LITHUANIAN LANGUAGE INSTITUTE - 1995 Structure There were 6 departments: Dictionaries (headed by V. Vitkauskas, PhD), Vocabulary (headed by V. Maciejauskienė, PhD), Grammar (headed by V. Ambrazas, PhD), Language Culture (headed by P. Kniūkšta, PhD), Terminology (headed by K. Gaivenis, PhD), Language History and Dialectology (headed by K. Morkūnas, PhD). He worked for the publishing group (head — A. Stanislovaitienė). At the end of 1995, there were 128 employees, including 33 researchers (prof. Habil. dr. —1, habil. dr. —7, doc. dr. —4, dr. —21). I. Andriukaitienė, A. Auksoriūtė, M. Lučinskienė, G. Kavaliūnaitė, J. Pajėdienė, E. Trumpa, N. Vaišnytė, A. Zavadzkaitė enrolled in the PhD programme in Humanities (Linguistics) at LKI and VDU. The Government of the Republic of Lithuania, pursuant to Articles 15, 16 and 17 of the Law on Science and Studies of the Republic of Lithuania and taking into account the conclusions of the first stage of the evaluation of the activities of state scientific institutes, decided to extend the status of state scientific institute of the Lithuanian Language Institute until 31 December 1997; approved the main directions of the Lithuanian Language Institute: lexicology and lexicography of the Lithuanian language, grammar structure, dialects, vocabulary research, terminology development, history of the Lithuanian language and linguistic relations research and standardization (Government Decree No. 399 of 21 March 1995 "On the Status of State Research Institutes- "). Participation in the press 81 scientific (13 in foreign publications) and 138 popular science articles were published. | Scientific expeditions The Department of Language History and Dialectology organized 2 expeditions: J July 7—13 in the vicinity of Vištytis (participated L. Grumadiene (leader), L. Mačianskaitė, D. Mikulėnienė, K. Morkūnas, R. Petkevičius, V. A. Zavadzkaitė, E. Trumpa, N. Vaišnytė, A. Vidugiris- ). 2 July 14-21 in Ylakiai area (participated V. Frantskunaite (leader), E. Liparte, R. Petkevičius, E. Trumpa, B. Vanagiene. According to the European Atlas of Languages, the Study of Lithuanian Dialects and their Interaction, and the Language Facts Collection programs, about 8000 units of dialect data were recorded, and about 80 hours of texts of these dialects were recorded on tapes. In 1995, the databases of the entire language were supplemented: dictionary — 40,5 thousand pieces, dialects — 12 thousand pieces. Conferences and international scientific relations On January 10, 2009, the seminar "Language and Computers" presented some newer computer language research programs and discussed them with their authors. Dr. L. Grumadienė, Dr. B. Stundžia and others spoke. From 20 February to 20 May 2016, N. Ambrazas was a trainee at Stockholm University. On April 26, the Language Culture Department organized a seminar "Sociolinguistics through the eyes of Lithuanian linguists". The papers were read by: L. Laužikaitė ("Sociolinguistics: origin, evolution and development perspectives"), L. Grumadienė ("Lithuanian sociolinguistics terms"), V. Labutis ("About the publication "Sociolinguistics and language culture"). The speakers P. Kniūkšta and A. Pupkis discussed the relationship between sociolinguistics and language culture, the prospects of sociolinguistic research. The participants of the seminar were given a list of preferred language practice publications for the ordinary language user, prepared by A. Kupčinskaitė and L. Laužikaitė. On December 21, 2009, at the seminar "Language and computers" (organizer — Dr. L. Grumadienė) held at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, linguists were introduced to the computerized versions of the "Dictionary of Contemporary Lithuanian Language", "Lithuanian Frequency Dictionary of Contemporary Written Language", and the creation of the Term Bank. October 29 — it was decided to submit the candidacy of Dr. A. Judžentis for the State scholarship. 5 December — new rates for data collection and translation of Lithuanian language were discussed; approved: LKI Regulations on the awarding of degrees; Recommendation to the VDU Senate on the granting of the professor’s pedagogical title to V. Ambrazas; In 1996, the Attestation Commission (habil. dr. S. Ambrazas, habil. dr. A. Kaulakienė, habil. dr. P. Kniūkšta, habil. dr. V. Maciejauskienė, habil. dr. A. Sabaliauskas, habil. dr. N. Guests of the Institute On April 26, the construction of the Lithuanian Language Institute with the depository of Lithuanian studies funds was inspected by Arvydas Matulionis, advisor to the President of the Republic of Lithuania. On 4 May, the Department of Language History and Dialectology was visited by Polish linguist Leszek Bednarczuk. Professor honored his friend A. Vanaga by visiting his eternal resting place in Antakalnis cemetery. On May 15, Prof. Denis Howard Green from the University of Cambridge visited the Institute. On May 17, a group of 12 teachers organized by the Lithuanian Language Society of Radviliškis district got acquainted with the work of the Departments of Dictionaries, Names, Language History and Dialectology and other departments of the Institute, the collection and preservation of data from living language and dialects. On June 19, experts of the Norwegian Science Council Prof. John Ole Askedal, Prof. Jostein Bgrtnes (chair), assistant Ingunn Lunde, Prof. Jan Peter Locher (Switzerland) updated information about the Institute’s scientific activities. On August 14, Dr. Zofia Sawaniewska-Mochowa from the Pedagogical Institute of Bydgoszcz visited the Dictionaries Department. On October 18, the Department of Language History and Dialectology was visited by the Russian linguist Georgiy Klimov. On November 10, the Dictionaries Department was visited by Dr. Mette Dalsgaard from the University of Copenhagen, a Danish translator and researcher of literature and Baltic-Scandinavian relations. The guest was accompanied by the director of the Baltoskandija Institute, Dr. Silvestras Gaižiūnas. On November 20, the third-year students of the Bydgoszcz Pedagogical Institute were introduced to the work of the Institute- ’s lexicographers and the academic Lithuanian language dictionary. Dates and people On January 4, academician Zigmantas Zinkevičius turned 70 years old. The Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania has opened an exhibition of Jubilee’s scientific works. Dr. V. Ambrazas spoke at the opening. On January 10, in the Small Hall of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, Prof. Zigmas Zinkevičius delivered a lecture entitled “The most important problems of the history of the Lithuanian language”. At the anniversary event spoke habil. dr. A. Sabaliauskas. On January 11, the senate of Vilnius Pedagogical University granted the professor’s title to habil. dr. Alexander Vanguard. 241
On January 19, the Swedish linguist Richard Ekblom (1874 10 30 — 1959 04 07) was mentioned at the extended meeting of the Department of Language History and Dialectology. K. Morkūnas has extensively reviewed the work of the scientist in Baltic and Lithuanian studies. A. Sabaliauskas, D. Gargasaitė, N. Čepienė, D. Mikulėnienė presented interesting facts and data about R. Ekblom as a person and scientist. J. Karaciejus and D. Gargasaitė shared their impressions from the research mission to Uppsala University. On February 7, Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania A. Šleževičius, on the proposal of the Lithuanian Science Council, awarded the highest level state scholarship to Dr. Kaziui Carrot. On February 14, in the conference hall of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, Prime Minister A. Šleževičius presented the 1994 Science Prizes of the Republic of Lithuania and laureate diplomas to Elena Grinaveckienė, Aldona Jonaitytė, Jonina Lipskienė, Kazis Morkūnas, Birutė Vanagiene, Aloyzas Vidugiris for their work "Atlas of the Lithuanian language" (Vol. 1 —Lexicography, Vol. 2 —Phonetics, Vol. 3 —Morphology. —V., 1977—1991). On February 15, the President of the Republic of Lithuania A. Brazauskas presented the Orders of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas of the 3rd degree to the distinguished linguists Aleksandr Vanagas and Zigmantas Zinkevičius. On February 15, the young staff of the Language Culture Department held a meeting with the correspondent member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, Dr. Kazis Ulvydas. On February 17, the Department of Language History and Dialectology honoured its colleagues — winners of the 1994 National Prize for Science: Elena Grinaveckienė, Aldona Jonaitytė, Jonina Lipskienė, Kazys Morkūnas, Birutė Vanagienė, Aloizas Vidugiris. On February 24, 2017, Artūras Judžentis, assistant professor of the Department of Grammar, defended his PhD dissertation in the humanities (linguistics) on the topic "Comparative constructions in the ancient Lithuanian language".
