This volume of jo editors Alfredo Bammesberger and Günter Neumann was designed so that the 25 articles published reflect the current problems and methodology of the study of Indo-European languages. The reaction was unexpectedly favourable — several reviews and otherwise long discussions appeared, in which the role of this journal in historical comparative Indo-European linguistics was fully assessed. Two reviews have also been published in the Lithuanian linguistic press —V. 1988, No. 6, 34-35) and V. Urbutis’s “Baltistica” (25, 1989, 188-190). Prof. Dr. Bernhard Forssmann of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg proposed in his review in the journal „Universitas“ (No. 12, 1988, 1329-1330) the establishment of a comprehensive register (Gesamtregister). As Professor Dr. Alfred Bammesberger notes in the editor’s preface, this proposal was gladly accepted by the editors’ publishing house. ir With the financial support of Die deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Dr. Christiane Schaefer (Freie Universität Berlin), Dr. Sabine Ziegler (Universität Würzburg) and Dr. Ivo Hajnal (Universität Zürich) took turns in compiling the register, and Gerhard Schafelberger (Universität Zürich) contributed significantly to the collection of the material. The technical work was carried out at the Department of English Philology and Comparative Linguistics of the University of Eichstätt, headed by Prof. Dr. Alfred Bammesberger. The register volume consists of: table of contents, pp. 5-6, editor’s preface, pp. 7-8, authors’ index, pp. 9-209, subjects’ index, pp. 209-321, and editors’ list, pp. 323-324. The indexes of authors and subjects are, of course, arranged in alphabetical order. P. 288-290 we find Lithuanian language subjects, arranged as follows: morphology, phonology, other, syntax, vocabulary. In the editor’s note, it was stated that the register’s editors had compiled an index of the lexical units also studied in the journal, but because of the large volume it would have been over 1200 pages — the publishers had to refuse — to publish it, and it was also added that, if interested parties inquired about individual language words, such information could be provided personally. And indeed, upon request of the index of the Baltic languages, it was immediately sent — for which he who writes here sincerely thanks Professor Dr. Alfred Bammesberger. Lithuanian words, written in two columns, cover 78 pages, Latvian words — 37 and Prussian words — 12 pages. In total, there are 127 pages in the register of Baltic words.
