bartinis organizations names, changed ar deleted outdated dates. Such illustrative examples have become more psychologically compelling. Compared to the previous “Office su Language Tips”, the new thing is that a computer version of the ir “Tips” has been prepared together with su the book. ir In these times of computerization, this makes it possible for those ir who are accustomed to “Jliteratūros”, to check one more fact of the language in their usual way. Of course, it is ar difficult to expect that “Office Language Tips” can solve all existing language problems in business letters. It is a formal language, and is subject to the requirements — of the standard language, the laws of language. ir If the person in the institution has not learned the Lithuanian language well, does not feel its system, the learned use of one other clericalism ar will not improve the situation. iš But this is a matter ne for language learners alone. As it is, for ir Lithuania “harmonizing” su European The Union, į the chancery iš language of literally translated conventions, treaties and ir other documents would not again be flooded with primitive ir foreign values. Symptoms of such a disease, unfortunately, are already present. This testifies to the meaning of the discussed publication "Office Language Tips" shows ir that the end of this work (as an ir opportunity jį for further improvement) not to see. Gediminas Samulionis DIALECTOLOGUE IŠ On September 29, 1999, after a long illness, the famous Lithuanian dialect researcher, doctor of humanities, died Elena Greenwich. Ji born 1928 m. of June 10 d. Jurbarke, in the Šuopų family. He spent his childhood in the beautiful Imsra valley, where his parents had a small farm. 1947 m. after graduating from Jurbarkas high school į Vilnius University, Faculty of ir History, where he studied Lithuanian language. He was ji fascinated by dialectology — ir for his entire life. He first began to study the dialect of his native country. The Jurbarkas dialect was described in ir his diploma thesis. 1952 m. after graduation from university Elena Grinaveckienė worked very briefly as a journalist. Already in the same year joined į The Lithuanian ir Language and Literature Institute ir immediately began to study į dialects. While collecting material for her dissertation “Mituva river dialect”, she walked the whole Jurbarkas district and acquired excellent dialect facts collection skills. After completing her postgraduate studies, Elena Grinaveckienė began working in the Department of Language History and Dialectology of the Institute of Lithuanian Language and Literature. Already in 1950, a systematic study of all Lithuanian dialects was started, preparing for the publication of the “Atlas of Lithuanian Language”. Grinaveckienė immediately engaged in this work — dialectology became her vocation. Starting as a junior research associate, she rose to the position of head of the department. Later, due to circumstances beyond her control, the title of her position changed several times, but she, without paying any attention to it, 222
worked diligently all the time on her favorite job of collecting dialect data, processing it and publishing it. ir Grinaveckienė contributed to the preparation or editing of all the most important common works of the department. In 1963, she and Juozas Senkaus edited "Lietuvos upių ir ežerų vardynas". In 1970, a chrestomatical publication “Lietuvių kalbos tarmės” was published, a large part of which was composed and edited by this dialectologist. The collection and processing of dialectal facts for the “Atlas of Lithuanian Language” was Grinaveckienės’ main work for about 20 years. She is one of the authors and editors of the three volumes of this work, published in 1977 (Lexicology- ), 1982 (Phonetics) and 1991 (Morphology), and she is the recipient of the Republic Prize for Science (1994). Grinaveckienė has published about 90 scientific articles. Many of them have been published in the Institute’s periodical “Lietuvių kalbotyros klausimai” (LKK). The first three volumes (1957, 1959, 1960) contain some chapters of her dissertation. Some of the valuable material of the dissertation is published later (e.g., LKK XV t., 1974: „Mituvos upyno dialekto žodis“). The material collected during the expeditions is occasionally discussed in her articles. Soon, Grinaveckiene's dialectological activities expanded beyond Lithuania. She devoted herself to the study of Lithuanian dialects in Belarus. There he met with the staff of the Belarusian Linguistics Institute, participated in their expeditions to study the dialects of the Belarusian language and Belarusian place names on the Lithuanian border, clarified the Lithuanianness of many Belarusian place names or common words. Many Lithuanian dialect texts from Wrocław and Rodūnios districts have been collected, and several articles have been published. Having gained authority, she was invited to be the editor of the capital works “Microtoponymics of Belarus” and “Dictionary of Belarusian dialects of North-West Belarus and its borders”. She would call, she used to, she was from Minsk, and hurried to the railway station — she needed to help her neighbors, to consult them. Grinaveckienė also studied Lithuanian dialects in Latvia, in the Daugavpils and Kraslava neighborhoods, and published articles on their characteristics (e.g., „Kai kurios Daugavpils lietuvių šnektos gramatinės ypatybės“, LKK XXIII t., 1983). She had learned the Latvian language and enjoyed communicating with Latvian linguists, patronizing them when they came to scientific conferences organized in Lithuania. Dedicating most of her efforts to dialectology, Grinaveckienė was not indifferent to other fields of Lithuanian language science, especially language culture. She has published numerous articles in the Institute’s “Language Culture”, the Language Section’s publication “Our Language” and in the periodical press. Recently, her articles have been regularly published in the Lithuanian Aide. While still at the university, Juozas Balčikonis had included Grinaveckienė in the collection of material for the Lithuanian Language Dictionary. And she was doing a great job. She knew how to talk to the interlocutor in such a way that he would open up and revive forgotten vocabulary. And the word-pickers just needed it. From every expedition or trip she brought to the Dictionary a large number of sheets with carefully written interesting sentences. 223
vo su The number of such leaflets Grinaveckienė has presented about 30 000. The iš words she collected alone would make a large volume of a dictionary. Many of her written words have entered į Printed volumes of the Lithuanian Language Dictionary. A lot will jų be used for ir Vocabulary additions. Her words collect all iš Lithuania, iš all Lithuanian-speaking parishes. But, of course, mostly iš He spent his ji vacations in Jurbarkas, where many of his admirers ją knew him. ir The dictionary will miss such a word picker… That a talented and hard-working man gave a lot to the study of Lithuanian language is not surprising. But it is ar possible to imagine that most of his works Grinaveckienė performed an already tormented incurable illness. Every step she took was unbearably painful for her. Carrying her suffering, she went and went through Lithuania, to Lithuanians... until she was sheltered by the graves of Jurbarkas visible from her native home. Jonas Paulauskas JANIS ENDZELYNAS STUDENTS IR COOPERATION IN MEMORY Janis Endzelins atminas, for sale, vestulės. Sast. Clear Barbara, Brigita Bushman. Red. col. B. Bušmane, A. Stafecka, V. Skujina (editor), M. Stengrevica. Riga, 1999: Latviešu valodas institūts, 323 p. The Institute of Latvian Language has published an interesting book of memoirs about the most famous Latvian language researcher Janis Endzelyns, whom Lithuanian linguists have called the Latvian giant, as mentioned in this book. It contains the memoirs of almost forty authors. The eldest of them, Mėrija Saulė-Sleinė, born at the end of the last century, met J. Endzelynas in her youth and spent together the last years of his life, the youngest, among others, the head of the editorial board of the book, Valentina Skujinia, who congratulated the linguist with a delegation of students on the occasion of his 85th birthday and carried one of the letters in the funeral procession. iš jo orders. It can be said that in all his memoirs J. Endzelynas emerges as an extraordinary personality. Everyone was impressed by his legendary punctuality, the fact that he read contentious lectures without any notes, strict exams, intolerance of any language errors (even the slightest dialects) and no compromise with any authorities. Especially a lot of interesting information ne just about J. Endzelynas’ personaliir ty, but also the whole cultural life of Latvia, first of all the university and his professorship, can be found in the memoirs of Karlis Dravinš, his wife Velta Rūke-Dravinš, and Rūdolfs Grabis (the latter have already been partly published in the book dedicated to R. Grabis, Savai valodai, Riga, 1997). 224
