ACTA LINGUISTICA LITHUANICA XLIV (2003), 191–195 PERSONALIA CONGRATULATIONS TO ELENA VALIULYTĖ On June 25 this year, the well-known Lithuanian linguist Elena Valiulytė celebrated her seventieth birthday. She was born in Kuktiškės, Utena County. After completing primary school in Kuktiškės, she continued her studies at Utena Secondary School, graduating in 1953. In the same year, she enrolled in the Faculty of History and Philology at Vilnius University, where she studied the Lithuanian language and literature and wrote her thesis on her native Kuktiškės dialect. After graduating from university, she worked for a year as a teacher at the seven-year school in Juodenėnai, Pabradė District, until Kazys Ulvydas, recognizing her talent as a linguist, invited her to work at the Institute of the Lithuanian Language and Literature. Elena Valiulytė worked in the Department of Contemporary Literary Lithuanian, established in 1960, from which the Grammar Department later developed. Elena Valiulytė devoted the most active years of her life to grammatical work. Under the supervision of Professor Juozas Balčikonis, she defended her doctoral dissertation in the humanities in 1966, entitled “The meanings and use of prepositions with the accusative in contemporary Lithuanian.” For the three-volume academic Grammar of the Lithuanian Language, she wrote the chapters on prepositions, verbal, nominal, numeral, and adverbial phrases, and the object. She co-authored three Grammars of Contemporary Lithuanian written by the department, contributing the chapters on prepositions, conjunctions, and subordinate-clause conjunctions. Išleido dvi monografijas – Vietą nusakome įvairiai (1995) ir Dabartinės lietuvių kalbos sintaksiniai sinonimai (1998), paskelbė nemažą straipsnių Lietuvių kalbotyros klausimuose (vėliau – Acta Linguistica Lithuanica), Kalbos kultūroje ir kituose leidiniuose. Mokslinėje spaudoje Elena Valiulytė bendradarbiauja ir dabar. Parengė spaudai savo mokytojo Kazio Ulvydo mokslinių darbų rinktinę Lietuvių kalbos prieveiksmiai (2000), kurioje paskelbti visi jo darbai apie prieveiksmį. Although she no longer officially works at the Institute, Elena attends the weekly seminars of the Grammar Department discussing the concept of the New Grammar of the Lithuanian Language and is always happy to talk with her younger colleagues. We wish the jubilarian—a colleague who is always well-disposed, friendly, attentive, wise, and delightful—much energy, good health, a cheerful spirit, and many happy years.
