TENDENCIES IN THE FORMATION OF JONIŠKIS MEN’S PERSONAL NAMES IN LITHUANIA’S OLDEST JONIŠKIS BAPTISMAL REGISTER BOOK, 1599–1621
Tendencies in the Formation of Male Personal Names in Joniškis in Lithuania’s Oldest Joniškis Baptism Register, 1599–1621
ABSTRACT
Among the most valuable documents for the historical anthroponomastics of Lithuanian townspeople in the 16th–18th centuries are town books of acts, inventories, church registration books (of baptisms, marriages, and deaths), and other historical sources of the period. Particularly appealing, in chronological terms, is the Joniškis baptismal register book of 1599–1621, now known to be unique and the oldest in Lithuania. This article analyzes, from the perspective of word formation, 168 male personal names of Joniškis residents (the second elements of two-part recorded names) collected from this book.
KEYWORDS: Joniškis, resident of Joniškis, baptismal register book, historical anthroponomastics, historical personal name, word formation.
ANNOTATION
City registry books, inventories, church record books (for baptism, marriage, death records) and other historical sources are among the most valuable 16th–18th century documents of the historical anthroponymy of Lithuanian townspeople. A chronologically unique Joniškis baptism record book of 1599–1621, which is currently the oldest known book of this type in Lithuania, is especially noteworthy. The article addresses 168 male personal

INTRODUCTION
The historical anthroponyms of the inhabitants of the old Joniškis parish have already begun to be studied. First, some Lithuanian personal-name forms were published from the oldest baptismal register book in Lithuania, that of Joniškis parish for 1599–1621 (Garliauskas 1998: 152–153). Somewhat later, the few records of Joniškis men with Lithuanian appellatives, collected from this ecclesiastical source, were discussed (Ragauskaitė 1999: 155). An analysis of 186 personal names of people from Joniškis from the same period established that among the reconstructed Lithuanian anthroponyms of non-baptismal-name origin, nicknames were the most frequent, while among the reconstructed personal names of baptismal-name origin, most derived from various forms of Christian names (Ragauskaitė 2004: 16–17). A later publication discussed the functioning of Lithuanian suffixes in the anthroponyms of Joniškis women from the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries (Garliauskas 2004: 21–22; Ragauskaitė 2005: 66–67). An in-depth analysis of 122 personal names showed that 32 (26%) were recorded with the Lithuanian suffixes -aičia, -yčia, -ienė, -(i)učia, while the remainder had the Slavic suffixes -ova, -ona. Three personal names (2.46%) with a Polish-type -sk- suffix were classified as derivatives with the ending -a. The reconstructed forms of 32 Joniškis women’s anthroponyms were compared with modern Lithuanian surnames. As many as 28 (87.5% of all reconstructed forms) are known in today’s name stock (Ragauskaitė 2015: 74; 2016: 64–65). An examination of the records of male inhabitants of villages in the Joniškis parish baptismal register for 1599–1621 established that some of their second anthroponyms were of Lithuanian origin (Ragauskaitė 2019: 25–26; 2019a: 57; 2019b: 81–82). Given the distinctive features of naming in Joniškis parish (of men and women), including the formation and origin of their proper names, research on the town’s historical anthroponymy appears timely and worth continuing.
The aim of this article is to discuss the recording practices for men from Joniškis in 1599–1621 and to analyze in detail their 168 personal names (the second members of binary names) from the perspective of word formation.
The objectives of this article are: 1) to examine the first members (given names) of binary records; 2) to identify the most productive suffixes of the second anthroponyms; 3) to reconstruct personal-name forms with Lithuanian derivational formants and compare them with modern Lithuanian surnames; 4) to determine how many and what kinds of Joniškis anthroponyms are no longer used in today’s name stock.

The following principal methods will be used to classify and evaluate historical anthroponymic data for the inhabitants of Joniškis: descriptive, comparative, and, in part, statistical¹. It will be necessary to identify the most common naming model, determine the most frequent personal-name suffixes, and describe the quantitative relationship between patronymic and non-patronymic groups of anthroponyms.
The material for this article was collected from the old Joniškis baptismal register book for 1599–1621. It was created three decades after the Council of Trent, held on 11 November 1563. It was at this council that it was decided to introduce baptismal and marriage registers in Catholic countries (Garliauskas 2010: 4; 2016: 17). The manuscript source’s original title is “Liber Baptisatoru[m]² || Ecc[esi]ae Parochialis Jani=||scensis ab Anno 159. – || usq[ue] ad An[num] || 1621. –”. Another title is written on the flyleaf: “CATA: || LOGS. || BAPTISA: || RVM. EC: || CLESIAE. || IANI: || SCEN: || SIS”. Benediktas Sviechovskis was parish priest of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Joniškis from 1594 to 1621. It was at his initiative that this ecclesiastical source began to be written in 1599 (LKD 79). Several people wrote the manuscript book in Latin and Polish. The formulas in the baptismal entries changed gradually (Garliauskas 1998: 139; 2004: 21–22; 2012: 72; Žilys 2012: 126–127; Ragauskaitė 2015: 56). A total of 168 binary male names were extracted from this historical document. The following section discusses the naming practices of the inhabitants of Joniškis.
1. THE NAMING SITUATION OF THE PEOPLE OF JONIŠKIS
1.1. It is important to define precisely which anthroponyms recorded in the church source can be attributed to the inhabitants of Joniškis. The key criteria for identifying the personal names of townspeople have already been discussed (Ragauskaitė 1999: 146; 2000: 94; 2001: 124; 2002: 32–34; 2003: 82; 2004: 8–9; 2005: 18–23; 2006: 81–82; 2009: 227–228; 2014a: 9–10; 2015: 59–61). Various references helped distinguish the people of Joniškis in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries: Lat. de Ciuitate ‘from the town’, Lat. de Ciuitate Ianizek, E ciuitate Ianizki ‘from the town of Joniškis’, Lat. de Janiszki ‘from Joniškis’, Pol. Janiski ‘Joniškis’, Pol. Z miasta ‘from the town’, etc., for example: 1599 Martini Baltuszkačia de Janiszki gen. sg. ĮNŠ 1v³; 1617 Parentes Petrus Budraitis <...> de ciuitate Janiszki ĮNŠ 195v; 1618 Par[entes] Jakub Cekutis <...> de Ciuitate Ianizke ĮNŠ 221v; 1603 E ciuitate Janiszki <...> Pat[rini] Gasparus Czepaitis
1 Apie šių metodų taikymą, tiriant istorinę antroponimiją, dar žr. Ragauskaitė 2005: 31.
2 Abbreviations recorded in the manuscript have been expanded. The missing text is indicated in square brackets. When presenting personal names, an effort is made to preserve the forms recorded in the original historical document.
3 All personal names presented in the article are taken from the registers. Each is accompanied by the year in which the anthroponym was recorded, the abbreviation of the historical source, and the folio number.

2. WORD-FORMATION FEATURES OF JONIŠKIS MEN’S ANTHROPONYMS
2.1. The personal names of the people of Joniškis from 1599–1621 are divided into two groups: 1) anthroponyms with the Lithuanian patronymic suffixes -aitis, -ėnas, -(i)onis, -(i)ūnas, -utis5 and the Slavic patronymic suffixes -evič, -ovič, with the suffix -iškis, with the diminutive suffixes -elis, -ulis, -utis, and with Polish-type -sk- suffixes; and 2) anthroponyms without these suffixes. Surnames were thus classified from a word-formation perspective in Vilija Maciejauskienė’s study Kriunų parapijos XVII–XVIII amžiaus antroponimai (Maciejauskienė 1993: 40). This classification was influenced by the specific nature of the word formation of historical anthroponyms. It is argued that only historical personal names, but not historical surnames, can be analyzed down to a morphologically indivisible structure. Similarly, anthroponyms recorded in the early seventeenth-century registers of marriages and baptisms of St John’s Church in Vilnius were analyzed (derivatives formed with endings and suffixes, and compounds were distinguished) (Zinkevičius 197: 235–242). The word formation of the personal names of sixteenth-century Kaunas townspeople was examined according to these principles (Ragauskaitė 2005: 98–101). Daiva Sinkeviūtė likewise assessed anthroponyms from a word-formation perspective (2006: 241–242; 2006a: 342–348; 2009: 348–350; 2016: 24–41; 2018: 119–129; 2018a: 303–325). Studies of the formation of Lithuanian surnames show that all surnames developed from various personal names—patronymics, names of nickname origin, old Lithuanian dithematic and monothematic anthroponyms, and others (Maciejauskienė 1997: 102). Thus surnames also preserve the word-formation features of those personal names. Therefore, surnames should be called primary forms and not treated as derivatives. The suffixes in the structure of surnames are inherited from anthroponyms and should therefore not be called derivational affixes (Žemienė 1999: 225–226; 2002: 12–14; 2017: 167–168; Maciejauskienė 2001: 167–187; Bartkutė 2004: 118; Ragauskaitė 2005: 98–101; 2018: 106).
The personal names of the inhabitants of Joniškis from the late sixteenth to the early seventeenth century (the second elements of the two-member naming model) are reconstructed from patronymics and anthroponyms of non-patronymic origin. Their reconstructed forms are marked with an asterisk and listed alphabetically. The anthroponyms on which the reconstructed personal-name form is based are then listed alphabetically by form. Where no exact equivalents could be found in the modern name inventory, several anthroponyms with the corresponding root are provided. In Slavicized personal names, the Slavic patronymic suffixes -evič, -ovič are often written, but it is thought that in the living Lithuanian language they may have
5 Earlier studies of seventeenth-century personal names have provided almost no evidence of the use of this suffix. The suffix -uitis is “called a patronymic suffix. This is also supported, among other things, by its frequent attestation in seventeenth-century personal names from Gruzdžiai” (Maciejauskienė 2010: 820).

2.2. In the 1599–1621 baptismal register of Joniškis parish, 168 personal names of Joniškis residents (men) were in use. Of these, 140 (83%) were assigned to the aforementioned first group. This group is considerably larger. Anthroponyms with suffixes are presented according to suffix productivity:

Studies of Lithuanian historical anthroponyms have shown that derivatives with the Lithuanian patronymic suffixes –aitis, –ėnas, –onis, –ūnas have defined areas of usage (Salys 1933: 169; Maciejauskienė 1977: 161–163; 1991: 242; Ragauskaitė 2014: 330). This confirms the conclusions of an earlier study of the 17th century, namely that “the greatest concentration of derivatives with the suffix –aitis is observed in Samogitia and Western Aukštaitija, although personal names formed with it have also been recorded in various other parts of Lithuania” (Maciejauskienė 1991: 242).

At least 4 personal names in this group have diminutive suffixes. It is claimed that “diminutives were sometimes also used as patronymics” (Zinkevičius 1977: 238). Thus, these suffixes may also have a patronymic meaning (Maciejauskienė 1991: 227; 1993: 43; Ragauskaitė 2005: 100–101). They are presented according to the frequency of the derivatives:
-(i)ulis (written -(i)ulis) – 2 anthroponyms (1.19%), e.g.: *Aidulis: 1600 Aidulis JNŠ 13v. Compare the contemporary surname Aidùlis (LPŽ I 69); *Geniulis: 1600 Geniulis JNŠ 14. Regarding gen-, compare the contemporary surnames Genònis, Genis, Genỹs, Geniūnas, Geniùs (LPŽ I 652).
-utis (written -utis) – 2 personal names (1.19%), e.g.: *Mikutis: 1620 Mi- kutis JNŠ 25v. Compare the contemporary surname Mikutis (LPŽ II 236); *Pramutis: 1599 Pramutis JNŠ 1v. A surname of this origin is no longer in use.
-elis (written -(i)elis) – 1 personal name (0.59%): *Žiogelis: 1616 Žiogelis JNŠ 19v. Compare the contemporary surnames Žiogelis, Žiogelis, Žiogelis (LPŽ II 1337).
Four (2.38%) personal names with the suffix –iškis were found (written: -isk, -isk, -iszk, -iszkis), e.g.: *Jukìškis: 1600 Jukiszkia gen. sg. JNŠ 16. Regarding juk-, compare the contemporary surnames Jukãvičius, Jùkelis, Jukėnas, Jukẽvičius (LPŽ I 852); *Magerkiškis: 1620 Magerkiskis JNŠ 24. A surname of this origin is no longer in use; *Mikiškis: 1617 Mikiskis JNŠ 197v. Regarding mik-, compare the contemporary surnames Mikus, Mikỹs (LPŽ II 228, 229); *Pūkiškis: 1621 Pukisk JNŠ 268. Regarding pūk-, compare the contemporary surname Pūkus (LPŽ II 528). This suffix may also have performed a patronymic function if its derivative comes from another anthroponym (Zinkevičius 1977: 241; Maciejauskienė 1991: 228). Applying the principles discussed above, 92 distinct personal names of Joniškis residents with Lithuanian suffixes were first reconstructed from the 123 anthroponyms attested in the source.
Three (1.78%) personal names bearing a suffix of the -sk- type were counted. These are: 1620 Krupskỹ JNŠ 253v, 1600 Sotowski JNŠ 16, 1617 Wierzbicki JNŠ 200. It is believed that the -sk- type suffix was sometimes replaced by the patronymic suffix -ovič. Some of these occupational names may have been borrowed, while others may have been formed locally from place names or arisen in some other way (Zinkevičius 1977: 57, 63).
2.3. Another group of anthroponyms recorded in the source is of non-patronymic origin. Only 28 (17%) were counted. This group comprises compound words and derivatives formed with endings. Fifteen forms of proper names in this group were discussed, out of the 17 personal names with Lithuanian derivational formatives recorded in the source. These are: *Balčius: 1601 Balčius JNŠ 22v. Compare the contemporary surname Balčius (LPŽ I 170); *Čebatorius: 1617 C₃obator{o}š JNŠ 199. Compare the contemporary surname Čebatorius (LPŽ I 403); *Dičkus: 1600 Dicuf JNŠ 8v; 1604 Diczaus gen. sg. JNŠ 48. Compare the contemporary surname Dičkus (LPŽ I 490); *Eigridas: 1617 Eigeri JNŠ 201v. Compare the contemporary surname Eigridas (LPŽ I 565); *Gulbė: 1617 Gulbe JNŠ 204. 2.4. After examining the personal names of Joniškis residents from the late 16th and early 17th centuries from the perspective of their formation, their reconstructed forms were also compared with present-day Lithuanian surnames. It emerged that 43 (40%) are still in use today. A further 51 anthroponyms (48% of all those reconstructed) have present-day surname equivalents of the same origin but different formation. The remaining 13 (12%) reconstructed personal names have no equivalent in the present-day Lithuanian name stock: *Dovikaitis (JNŠ 2v), *Gednavais (JNŠ 200v), *Gupeluitis (JNŠ 263), *Kepetis (JNŠ 267v), *Magerkis (JNŠ 242), *Paginais (JNŠ 25), *Pramūtis (JNŠ 1v), *Skiurbaitis (JNŠ 266), *Sliudutis (JNŠ 254v), *Sliuna (JNŠ 22v), *Vilnakis (JNŠ 270v), *Zaltra (JNŠ 268), *Žaudaitis (JNŠ 206).
3. CONCLUSIONS
1. A total of 168 compound designations of Joniškis men were selected from the 1599–1621 Joniškis baptismal register. Their first members are Christian names. Various forms were used (full traditional forms, abbreviations, and their diminutive derivatives).
2. The 168 personal names examined (the second members of the two-member naming model) were divided into two groups: 1) anthroponyms with the Lithuanian patronymic suffixes -aitis, -ėnas, -(i)onis, -(i)ūnas, and -utis and the Slavic suffixes -evič and -ovič; those with the suffix -iškis; those with the diminutive suffixes -elis, -ulis, and -utis; and those with Polish-type suffixes in -sk-; and 2) anthroponyms without these suffixes.
3. The first group is considerably larger. It consists of 140 anthroponyms (83% of all second personal names). Patronymic derivatives with the suffixes -aitis (72, i.e. 42.85%) and -utis (25, i.e. 14.60%) are the most frequent among them. The second group comprises 28 personal names (17%).
4. A comparison of 107 reconstructed personal-name forms with present-day Lithuanian surnames showed that 43 (40%) are still in use today. A larger share, namely 51 (48% of all reconstructed forms), have present-day surname equivalents of the same origin but different formation. The remaining 13 (12%) are absent from the present-day name stock.

Tendencies of Formation of Joniškis Male Personal Names in Lithuania’s Oldest Joniškis Baptism Record Book of 1599–1621
SUMMARY
The article addresses 168 personal names of Joniškis male residents (second components of the binary name model) collected from the Joniškis baptism record book of 1599–1621 from the perspective of word-formation. Cristian names are used as the first components of this type of naming. Their various forms are recorded in the source (long canonical, abreviations and diminutive names). A total of 168 second anthroponyms selected for the analysis were divided into two groups: 1) personal names with the Lithuanian -aitis, -ėnas, -(i)onis, -(i)ūnas, -utis and Slavic -evič, -ovič patronymic suffixes, the suffix -iškis, the diminutive suffixes -elis, -(i)ulis, -utis and the Polish -sk- type suffixes and 2) personal names without these suffixes. The first group is far larger. It includes 140 (83% of all the second anthroponyms) personal names. They are dominated by anthroponyms with patronymic suffixes -aitis (72, i.e. 42.85%) and -utis (25, i.e. 14.60%). The second group is comprised of 28 (17%) personal names. After comparing 107 forms of reconstructed anthroponyms with contemporary Lithuanian surnames, it was observed that 43 (40%) of them are still known today. A greater part, i.e. 51 (48% of all the reconstructed forms), have the equivalents of the same origin but different word-formation among present-day surnames. The remaining 13 (12%) are no longer found among contemporary surnames.
