Discussion In his pape we ocus on ex s w i en in Basque despi e he ad e se diglossic si - ua ion. Thei au ho s usually belonged o uppe social s a a and we e augh how o w i e in Romance. Thus, li e acy in Basque depended on li e acy in ano he lan- guage. This ac is pa en in spelling: o ins ance, w i e s o en s uggled o ende Basque sibilan s using Romance sys ems, which ha e ewe sibilan phonemes. He e we explo e he consequences i had on syn ax. W i ing does no usually happen in oid and knowing how o w i e is no lim- i ed o he command o he code. I also p esupposes knowledge ela ed o di e en aspec s o w i ing, such as gen e knowledge and knowledge ela ed o he social con ex o w i ing (Beau o & Iñes a 2014). Fo example, w i ing a le e equi es unde s anding o he con en ions uling his ype o ex s and o how he gi en communi y usually w i es hem, as well as wha is hough o be co ec and wha no . Gen es can in ac be unde s ood as “socially and cul u ally pa e ned ways o engaging in ac i i y” (Lillis 2013: 70). As ega ds gen es analysed he e, in e ms o Koch and Oes e eiche (2012 [1985]), p i a e le e s a e close o he language o immediacy, and o mal doc- umen s p oduced by di e en ins i u ions a e examples o language o dis ance: hey cons i u e a monologue, he e is dis ance be ween he pa ne s, and opics a e ixed. Mo eo e , ea u es o illi e a e w i ing (see Mon gome y 1995) a e common: p oblems wi h spelling and wo d di ision o missing punc ua ion ma ks. This is because hose ex s we e w i en in Basque by people who we e li e a e in Romance. In a complex sociolinguis ic en i onmen , hey could no ely on a ully s anda dised language and had o use a dialec al a- ie y. Ne e heless, hey looked o models o cons uc hei w i ings. Chap e 10. In gene al, lea ning o co espondence-w i ing con en ions usually happened in p ac ice: by eading o lis ening o le e s and hen imi a ion (see an de Wal & Ru en 2013 and e e ences he ein). This migh be a change om abo e sp eading in w i ing om mo e li e a e bilinguals (usually be- longing o highe social classes) o less p o icien ones. Simila explana ions ha e been p oposed o changes in ela i isa ion s a egies in a numbe o languages (Romaine 1982; Rissanen 1999; Ru en & an de Wal 2014, among o he s). In Basque, his change could happen h ough imi a ing he Romance s yle, o in- s ance, h ough impo ing epis ola y o mulae, when w i ing a ex belonging o a gen e no -so-en enched in Basque.
