154 CHAPTER-14 AI (ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE) FOR OLD AGE COMMUNITY Mansi Saini Department of Zoology Chinmaya Degree College, Haridwar ABSTRACT In the 21st Century, Artificial Intelligence (AI) constitutes a pervasive discourse across all disciplines. The emulation of human cognition within programmed machinery for philanthropic endeavors represents a transformative undertaking. Furthermore, advancements and triumphs in AI are streamlining arduous and demanding tasks. In this contemporary epoch, humanity, driven by an inherent desire for advancement, seeks expedited and simplified solutions for its endeavors. Artificial Intelligence is exceptionally adept at fulfilling this very need. AI possesses the capacity to augment the quality of life. It also caters to variegated requirements and domains, engineered to execute functions with remarkable celerity. The elderly population of India in 2023 was 153 million (aged 60 and above) is expected to reach a staggering 347 million by 2050(1). In due course, if these individuals are not able to do their duties then this should be a matter of solicitude for any state. Subsequent to considerable furtherance in technology, we cannot overlook such a substantial community. AI is not solely for straight forward procedure but if it is employed appropriately, it can unravel numerous of our predicament effortlessly. This paper presents a synopsis on the applicability of AI for strengthen of Old age citizens, with focus on AI supremacy and stumbling blocks. Technology has unequivocally assumed a pivotal role across all sectors. Consequently, a comprehensive societal recalibration is imperative for sustained advancement. In this rapidly evolving epoch, individuals must proactively upskill and adapt to remain pertinent. Concurrently, their surrounding communities ought to recognize this imperative and offer unwavering support. A renowned Sanskrit aphorism from ancient Vedic scriptures, specifically the Taittiriya Upanishad, "Mātr Devo Bhava, Pitr Devo Bhava," underscores the reverence for mother and father as deities. Intergenerational cohabitation remains prevalent in India. For centuries, progeny have assumed the responsibility of elder care. However, an emerging pattern of nuclear families in India is increasingly leading to senior citizens being marginalized and neglected. Such abandonment and
155 isolation can elevate the propensity for mental health issues, alongside a decline in the ability to manage daily tasks independently. Illustration 1 :- The provided chart delineates AI’s contributions across various horizons, offering a visual representation of its impact and integration at different stages of development or application. A viable resolution for the predicament of disquieted older adults resides in Artificial Intelligence. AI possesses the capacity to empower seniors to lead autonomous, secure, and wholesome lives. The multifaceted requirements of the elderly can thus be addressed and satisfied. Automated and virtual assistance holds the potential to streamline the management of smart homes and devices, thereby enhancing the comfort of elderly individuals. We can calibrate AI-driven smart homes to user specifications, orchestrating timers, modulating the indoor milieu in harmony with external conditions and individual comfort, and adapting functionalities to accommodate health conditions and specific needs. 2. Social isolation and loneliness, which affect about a quarter of older people, are key risk factors for mental health conditions in later life (3). AI systems can facilitate virtual connections with both familiar and unfamiliar individuals. Engaging in social interactions with people who share common interests and disseminating life experiences contribute significantly to overall well-being. Furthermore, actively participating in online friendships and video calls, acquiring new skills through online platforms, and showcasing personal aptitudes can profoundly impact social well-being. Online counseling and support groups also play a crucial role in fostering a sense of social connectedness. Emotional support and socialization, augmented by AI, will undoubtedly alleviate anxiety and depression. The timeless adage "old is gold" resonates deeply, highlighting the invaluable wisdom garnered through extensive experience and dedicated practice. Elderly individuals, in particular, possess a profound reservoir of knowledge. Leveraging the power of Artificial Intelligence, this invaluable wisdom can now be disseminated to a global audience, empowering millions. This transformative potential will not only bolster their self-confidence but also cultivate a profound sense of independence. A Catalyst for Linguistic Inclusivity and Empowerment:- Language serves as an invaluable resource, and therefore, no limitations or barriers should be imposed based on linguistic differences. We must actively resist the creation of any linguistic borders. The widespread availability of Artificial Intelligence across nearly all languages represents a powerful tool in this regard. It possesses the capability to assist even the elderly by interacting with them in their native tongue, to facilitate the acquisition of new languages, and to overcome the challenges individuals encounter due to a lack of accessible information in their preferred language. Large Language Models (LLMs) offer extensive capabilities, enabling swift and efficient information retrieval. Seamless access to information, presented in their native language, will significantly enhance data accessibility for the elderly. This empowerment will enable them to independently comprehend responses to their inquiries, thereby fostering greater self-reliance and autonomy. Enriching Leisure in Later Life:- Upon reaching a certain age and concluding one's professional career, the ample free time that ensues can often pose a challenge, particularly in the later stages of life. This period, characterized by an abundance of leisure but a perceived lack of meaningful engagement, can be profoundly enriched by various forms of entertainment. Artificial Intelligence (AI), in particular, offers a wealth of captivating options: AI-powered games, dynamic social media platforms, intricate puzzles, challenging riddles, and numerous other diversions. Critically, AI's ability to meticulously tailor these experiences to individual interests ensures that one's leisure hours are not just occupied, but genuinely fulfilling and enjoyable.
157 Holistic Wellness:- It is a widely held belief that a robust intellect resides within a healthy physique. A sedentary lifestyle, coupled with inadequate nutritional intake, frequently precipitates a myriad of ailments. Consequently, the prevalence of serious debilitating conditions among the elderly has become alarmingly commonplace. Certain physiological parameters, such as blood pressure, temperature, and pulse rate, necessitate continuous monitoring, which is often challenging for individuals living alone. AI systems are capable of identifying and monitoring a person's health status, alerting caregivers promptly to take requisite actions. AI-integrated smartwatches and SMS messaging systems can promptly apprise individuals of nearby medical facilities and ensure timely access to healthcare. Furthermore, an integrated alarm mechanism can proactively alert individuals to deteriorating health indicators. These systems are capable of precisely managing an individual's dietary requirements and dispelling misinformation pertaining to various ailments. Ultimately, these advancements possess the potential to alleviate the undue burden on healthcare departments and significantly contribute to the preservation of invaluable human lives. Intuitive Usability and Unhindered Access:- The imperative for intuitive AI designs is undeniable. For the elderly demographic, often unaccustomed to technological advancements and facing cognitive hurdles, designs must prioritize user-friendliness and accessibility. Furthermore, amidst rampant inflation and escalating costs across all sectors, the economic viability of these designs becomes paramount. It would be a significant setback if, despite crafting user-friendly interfaces, we fail to meet market demand due to prohibitive pricing. Consequently, our endeavors must focus on developing solutions that are not only easily comprehensible but also financially attainable for individuals across all socioeconomic strata. Fortification and Safeguarding:- Inherent in any innovation are accompanying challenges. Artificial intelligence, however, presents a formidable solution to many such predicaments. Our increasing digital presence, while offering myriad conveniences, simultaneously amplifies our vulnerability to online fraud and elaborate scams. Herein, AI proves invaluable, offering sophisticated scam detection capabilities, intercepting deceptive calls, and enabling the immediate cessation of transactions when fraudulent activity is suspected. As per the Report of Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) (Wave-I) from Ministry of Health and Family Welfare around 5.2% of senior citizens surveyed reported ill-treatment/ abuse.(4) In contemporary society, elderly individuals disproportionately bear the brunt of criminal activities such as theft and murder, frequently presenting themselves as readily exploitable targets for perpetrators. The integration of AI-powered security systems offers a promising solution to fortify the safety of this vulnerable demographic. These sophisticated systems can meticulously detect anomalous activities, promptly relaying critical alerts to both local law enforcement and the elderly person's family members. Furthermore,
158 smart home locks, enhanced with AI capabilities, can be configured to grant access exclusively to authorized personnel. The systems can also identify the presence of weaponry in close proximity to an intruder. In instances of forceful entry, an advanced AI security system can seamlessly transition into an alert mode, triggering an immediate and conspicuous alarm to deter the intrusion. There's a fine line between belief and unquestioning credulity. The proliferation of such misleading narratives across the internet is a matter of significant concern, particularly as older individuals are highly susceptible to internalizing this erroneous information. Fortunately, AI systems, being trained on high-fidelity data, and deliberately populated with vetted information to counter false rumors, can prove instrumental in dispelling these deeply ingrained myths among the elderly. 3. PARAMOUNT HURDLES AND SALIENT DELIBERATION The Irreplaceable Nature of Human Connection :- While AI offers extensive capabilities and can significantly augment human efforts, it cannot truly substitute the intrinsic value of human connection. The profound emotional bonds, shared understanding, and genuine sense of belonging that characterize human relationships are qualities that AI, by its very nature, lacks. This fundamental absence of authentic attachment and the unique feeling of "being oneself" will invariably continue to be a source of profound discomfort and a persistent concern for discerning individuals. While artificial intelligence can indeed furnish virtual assistance and facilitate digital connectivity, it fundamentally lacks the capacity for genuine human emotions. Consequently, its ability to comprehend the intricate nuances of every situation, encompassing the multifaceted interconnections inherent in human experience, remains considerably constrained compared to that of a real human. 5. Foremost among these is the imperative of widespread adoption and user education; it is crucial to effectively introduce AI to the general populace, demystify its installation processes, and ensure comprehensive understanding of its operational nuances. Addressing diverse budgetary constraints and customizing solutions to meet individual requirements are equally critical. Moreover, consistently providing robust and dependable network infrastructure remains a formidable obstacle, particularly given that adverse weather conditions frequently cause network disruptions. Therefore, to fully harness the transformative potential of AI in enhancing safety, it is incumbent upon us to strategically address and surmount these pervasive connectivity challenges. The Ethical Quandary of Entrusting Life to AI:- Life is invaluable. The lives of individuals across all social strata hold immense worth. In this era of artificial intelligence, where dependency on AI is increasingly pervasive, a significant ethical dilemma emerges: is it justifiable to entrust a human life to an inanimate, emotionless machine? While machines can be refined and enhanced, a life lost due to their error is irretrievable. The moral permissibility of such reliance warrants considerable contemplation. If individuals become overly reliant on AI for their safety and decision-making, their ability to react effectively in the absence of these systems could be significantly compromised, potentially leading to dire outcomes. Consequently, the imperative to engineer and universally disseminate AI solutions across the entirety of the world's linguistic spectrum becomes paramount. Within this broader context, India's profound linguistic diversity presents a particularly salient challenge and opportunity. Substantial undertakings are still requisite in meticulously constructing robust data structures for each of its myriad languages. Furthermore, the comprehensive training of AI models to intelligently comprehend and execute instructions seamlessly across this vast linguistic landscape constitutes an ongoing and critical endeavor. CONCLUSION In conclusion, the increasing neglect of the elderly due to changing family structures presents a significant societal challenge. Artificial Intelligence offers a powerful solution, enabling seniors to live autonomously, securely, and with enhanced well-being through smart homes, health monitoring, social connectivity,

While AI provides immense benefits, its successful implementation requires overcoming challenges such as ensuring intuitive and affordable designs, mitigating reliance on perfect network connectivity, safeguarding against cyber threats, and avoiding over-dependence, all while acknowledging the ethical considerations of entrusting human care to technology. Ultimately, AI has the potential to significantly improve the quality of life for the elderly, provided its integration is strategic, accessible, and secure. AI significantly augments human capabilities but cannot replace genuine human connection and emotional understanding.
