An overview of the global distribution of the species is presented and its known Iberian distribution is summarised and mapped. Se cita Oiceoptoma thoracicum (Linnaeus, 1758) (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Silphinae) por primera vez de Portugal. Se presenta una visión general de la distribución mundial de la especie y se resume y mapea su distribución ibérica conocida. Recibido: 1 de diciembre de 2024 Publicado on-line: 22 de enero de 2025 Aceptado: 14 de diciembre de 2024 The carrion beetle Oiceoptoma thoracicum (Linnaeus, 1758) (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Silphinae1), described from Europe by LINNAEUS (1758) as Silpha thoracica, has a very wide European and Asian recorded distribution range that extends from Spain and the British Isles in the west to the Russian Far East and Japan in the east (RŮŽIČKA, 2015). 1 In the early years of this century, PRIETO PILOÑA et al. (2002) compiled the recorded distribution of the Silphidae that occur in the Iberian Peninsula and added new distributional data for most of the species. At that time, the known distribution of O. thoracicum (Map 1) included ten Spanish provinces (ordered chronologically by the first record for each): Lleida (ESPAÑOL, 1933), Segovia (FUENTE, 1924), Asturias and León (SALGADO COSTAS & RÉGIL CUETO, 1979), Cantabria (NÚÑEZ et al., 1990), A Coruña (VÁZQUEZ GARCÍA & BASELGA, 1992), Álava and Vizcaya (BAHILLO DE LA PUEBLA & LÓPEZ-COLÓN, 2000), plus the two reported for the first time in that reference, Lugo and Navarre (PRIETO PILOÑA et al., 2002). Since then, the species was recorded from Pontevedra (BLANCO SOUTO, 2003), Guipúzcoa (CASTRO, 2004), and Girona (DIÉGUEZ FERNÁNDEZ & TRÓCOLI, 2023). In this note, we present the first Portuguese record of O. thoracicum based on a photograph uploaded to the citizen science online platform iNaturalist.org by the second author.
