Open Alex at Swedish SUNET 2nd Nordic Bibliometric Infrastructure Spring Meeting Tobias Jeppsson, KTH Library Contents •Background •Current situation •Sunet •Current idea and time plan •Comments and reflections Background •Several Swedish organizations use bibliometrics extensively −Mixture of Web of science, Scopus, OpenAlex and commercial systems (SciVal etc) •No common national system for bibliometrics or research evaluations •Multiple individual attempts to evaluate and use Open Alex, both for research and evaluative bibliometrics Current situation •Several universities and funders are looking into OpenAlex −API access −Loading of full snapshot into local databases •Quite resource demanding •Much duplicated work and much done “on the side” on insufficient resources large coordination gains to be made Latest research and innovation bill pointing towards openness in research and research evaluation Sunet •Backbone for IT-services for Swedish universities •Hosting both specific services as well as flexible VM-based resources •Supporting systems for both research as well as university administration •Have models for cost-sharing and secure login solutions across organisations Requests and demands •Ability to share data −within university system but also with outside actors −collaboration with commercial partners (combining data, language models) •Comparable evaluation data between organisations (i.e. based on same data and methods) •Both access for full data for customization and deep analysis as well as standardized data sets •Crossing bibliometric data with Swepub or local, internal data sources Idea going forward 1. Test phase Central download and flattening of data Access to tabular data and basic database 2. Pilot phase (if test phase goes well) Planning for stable system Probably/hopefully smooth transition from test phase 3. Implementation and maintenance phase Clear idea of division of responsibilities Collaborative team across organisations for development and maintenance Envisioned system (very preliminary ideas) •Pipeline for continuous data updates •Flattened data available in tabular form + as database •Mixture of “raw” OpenAlex and derived indicators •Additional co-located data (Swepub, org. structures etc) •Some standardized dataset/reports based on e.g. PIDs •Common codebase Eventually separate databases/spaces for organizations with restricted access Governance −SUHF metrics group (bibliometric community) −Sunet −SUHF steering group?
