Organized This document contains the descriptions of the organized scenarios. The added text from #1 to #4 is highlighted in color. Scenario #1 GM Our company develops and manufactures heat pumps for family homes. The company has the goal to provide the most energy-efficient heating solution on the market. But the energy consumption of the current product version is too high. We have to solve this problem. ARM I work in the product development department as product owner. In this role, I am responsible for our “Smart-Heat” product, which is the next version we will offer on the market. I am also in charge of the product innovation process for “Smart-Heat” and have to make sure that we reach our goal of the market’s most energy-efficient heating solution. PM The first step in the product innovation process is target setting. In target setting, we need the customer survey as input and use it to develop the list of target features. The next step is to define the product specification based on the target feature list. The result is the specification document and concludes the innovation process. As the product owner, I am responsible for both steps, target setting and product specification. TC The product innovation process uses two IT-systems: the production system and the version management system. The production system is the most important one. The version management system supports the production system. PS Our product “Smart-Heat” consists of the indoor module and the outdoor module. The most important feature for our clients is that SmartHeat is energy-efficient. CM Let me explain some of the important concepts we use in the company: • Energy-efficiency can be calculated as the energy output for heating divided by the energy consumption. • Energy consumption is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh) • The customer survey provides an overview what our customers expect for the next version of our products. • Feature is something the customer wants the product to have. • Target feature is a feature we will implement in the next version of the product • Specification document defines the functional and non-functional characteristics to be offered by the product
Scenario #2 GM Our company develops and manufactures heat pumps for family homes. The company has the goal to provide the most energy-efficient heating solution on the market. To achieve this, we aim to minimize the energy consumption of the heat pump and to produce the remaining energy required by the heat pump with the integrated photovoltaic module. My colleague in the department is the product designer. In this role, he is responsible for minimizing the energy consumption of the heat pump. PM The first step in the product innovation process is target setting. In target setting, we need the customer survey as input and use it to develop the list of target features. The next step is to define the product specification based on the target feature list. The result is the specification document, which is the input for the step, the product design. This process produces the design description and concludes the innovation process. As the product owner, I am responsible for both steps, target setting and product specification. My colleague, the product designer is in charge of product design process. TC The product innovation process uses two IT-systems: the production system and the version management system. The production system is the most important one. The version management system supports the production system. The production system consists of three components: the database system, the transaction middleware and the user interface. PS Our product “Smart-Heat” consists of the indoor module and the outdoor module. The most important feature for our clients is that SmartHeat is energy-efficient. The outdoor module also consists of two modules: the photovoltaic module and the outdoor air exchange unit. The photovoltaic module has the feature of zero-emission energy production. • Target feature is a feature we will implement in the next version of the product
• Specification document defines the functional and non-functional characteristics to be offered by the product • Design description defines the main building blocks of a product with their interfaces. • Zero-emission energy production means that energy is produced without CO2 emissions • Heat pump extracts heat from the environment to be used to heat buildings. Heat pumps are characterized by their energy-efficiency, energy consumption and features.
Scenario #3 GM Our company MultiHeat develops and manufactures heat pumps for family homes. The company has the goal to provide the most energy-efficient heating solution on the market. To achieve this, we aim to minimize the energy consumption of the heat pump and to produce the remaining energy required by the heat pump with the integrated photovoltaic module. But the energy consumption of the current product version is too high. We have to solve this problem. To minimize the energy consumption, we aim to either develop a new heat extractor with very low energy consumption, or to re-design the existing heat extractor by adapting it for a new refrigerant. However, the period available for the development is very short, and new refrigerants are very expensive. These two problems have to be addressed. There is also a constraint related to producing the remaining energy for the heat pump with photovoltaic: the maximum energy production of the photovoltaic module is 50 kWh. My colleague in the department is the product designer. In this role, he is responsible for minimizing the energy consumption of the heat pump. MultiHeat also has a marketing department, which consists of the social media group, and the print media group. MulitHeat’s printing press is belongs to the print media group. The process of a marketing campaign consists of four steps: it starts with planning the marketing campaign. This step takes a document describing the campaign target as input and develops the campaign plan. Afterwards, two steps happen in parallel: the social media campaign and the print media campaign. Both are based on the campaign plan and both deliver some statistics about the campaign. The last step is the supervision of the campaign results that produces a result document. The marketing department is responsible for steps of this process. TC The product innovation process uses two IT-systems: the production system and the version management system. The production system is the most important one. The version management system supports the production system. The production system consists of three components: the database system, the transaction middleware and the user interface. The IT system used in the marketing campaign is the social media studio, which consists of the SM authoring system and the SM life system. Both share the SM repository.
In addition to Smart-Heat, the company also offers the “maintenance and trouble-shooting” service that includes the annual service, repair (if required), and a service kit. • Target feature is a feature we will implement in the next version of the product • Specification document defines the functional and non-functional characteristics to be offered by the product • Design description defines the main building blocks of a product with their interfaces. • Zero-emission energy production means that energy is produced without CO2 emissions • Heat pump extracts heat from the environment to be used to heat buildings. Heat pumps are characterized by their energy-efficiency, energy consumption and features. • Campaign target document defines the target group, campaign start and end date, and the campaign budget. • Campaign plan describes what social media activities and print media products are part of the campaign. • Campaign statistics summarizes the response rates for the social media and print media activities. • Campaign result document summarizes the statistics and compares them with the campaign target.
Scenario #4 GM Our company MultiHeat develops and manufactures heat pumps for family homes. The company has the goal to provide the most energy-efficient heating solution on the market. To achieve this, we aim to minimize the energy consumption of the heat pump, to produce the remaining energy required by the heat pump with the integrated photovoltaic module, and to provide services supporting high availability of the heat pump. The goal of the service supporting high availability also causes some problems: the control unit has to be connected to the Internet to provide the required status information required and the company does not have much experience with online information processing. However, there is also the opportunity of early implementing the new European regulation for energy-efficient heating that requires continuous monitoring of devices. My colleague in the department is the product designer. In this role, he is responsible for minimizing the energy consumption of the heat pump. MultiHeat also has a marketing department, which consists of the social media group, and the print media group. MulitHeat’s printing press is belongs to the print media group. In the print media group, they have a print designer who is responsible for the print media campaign, and in the social media group there is a social media designer responsible for the social media campaign. They also have an operator for the printing press in the print media group. The content specialist works in the social media group. The general manager is responsible for all departments of the company.
When one of MultiHeat’s customers submits an order, the first process with the company to receive the order specification is check order validity. This process either rejects the customer order or produces a verified order specification, which is the input to the next step, the handling of the customer order. This process produces the order confirmation that is processed in the next step, prepare product delivery, that results in a delivery order. Handle customer order consists of three steps that can be done in parallel: check availability of the ordered product; check customer status (in particular, for unpaid invoices); and check configuration (what product configuration is required?). All three steps together produce the order confirmation. IT-systems supporting the handling of customer orders are the product planning system and the enterprise resource planning system. Both systems share a distributed database. In addition to Smart-Heat, the company also offers the “maintenance and trouble-shooting” service that includes the annual service, repair (if required), and a service kit. The features of “maintenance and trouble-shooting” are the quick response to error situations, discount prices in case of repairs and personal service technician.
• Order specification: provides all information relevant for a customer order, such as the customer name and id, order date, desired delivery date, list of ordered products. • Rejected order specification is the order specification with an additional attribute describing the reason for the rejection. • Verified order specification is the order specification with an additional attribute documenting who accepted the order. • Delivery order specifies when and where the ordered products are prepared for delivery to the customer. • Order confirmation: consists of the verified order specification and the delivery order.
