CODEBOOK FLIP – Fluctuations in Personality – Study Codebook | FLIP | 2 CODEBOOK FLIP The main aim of the FLIP-Study was to investigate the similarity between the factor structure of intra-individual variations in personality states and the factor structure of inter-individual variations in trait measures. About 100 individuals (mostly students) took part in this study that was conducted at the University of XXX. In FLIP, personality states were assessed from October to December at 82 days. The official FLIP-study closed on December the 22th. However, all participants were invited to fill out the daily assessments across Christmas time and about 75 participants took part in this Christmas-FLIP. The results of these daily assessments are available in a separate file (see below for further information). Before and after the daily assessments, participants’ self-reported personality traits (including intelligence measures in the second wave) were assessed in online questionnaires. Finally, we also asked acquaintances of the participants to fill out the personality measures during the first weeks of the study. You are cordially invited to collaborate with us on FLIP’ data. Please see the section “Open Science Framework and Collaboration” for more information on this. This Codebook provides you with a comprehensive documentation of the FLIP-study. It describes FLIP’s timeline, data sources, procedures, scales and items, and should enable you to comprehend all stages of data collection. For this purpose, the Codebook is divided into three main sections. The first section – Overview – gives you a general orientation in FLIP’s timeline and data sources. Its main purpose is to guide you through the data collection. This section is best to start with when familiarizing yourself with FLIP. The second section – Procedures – provides you with detailed information on the instructions and their translations. This section is intended to give you thorough insight into all stages of data collection. The third section – Codebook – includes all information on the data collection on a scale and item level for all data sources. The Codebook specifically informs you about the scales used and their origins. It provides you with the exact wording of each item and a corresponding translation into English. All respective response formats and other important item characteristics are mentioned in this section. The variable names in this section also match the variable names in the data files. So, if you ever consider asking for FLIP data, this is the section where you find all necessary information to specify your data query. In case you recognize any mistakes or potential for improvements please do not hesitate to contact us ( (see the OSF site of FLIP for contact information). We are grateful to all student assistants for their help in data collection. We also provide information about Collaboration and the data files of the FLIP study. DATA SOURCES TIMELINE Daily Assessments On 82 days, participants were asked to indicate how they retrospectively appraise their behavior on that day regarding 30 adjectives. Part of the adjectives are markers of Agency and Communion and the Big Five. The other adjectives refer to motive states and self-esteem. We also assessed the Affect-Grid. Online Surveys Via online surveys we assessed participants’ demographics and various personality trait information (e.g., Big Five, narcissism, trait affect, self-esteem, interpersonal adjective list etc.) as selfand acquaintancereport before and after the daily assessment phase (the acquaintancereport was only assessed in the first phase of the study). Cognitive Ability Measures At the end of the second survey, participants were tested in their cognitive abilities. By the means of computer-based tests, we assessed reasoning (i.e., fluid intelligence via matrices test) and verbal intelligence (i.e., crystallized intelligence; word/non-words test). Life-Events In the second survey, participants were asked to indicate if and when important life events had occurred during the daily assessment phase of the study. Christmas Flip The announced part of the FLIPstudy closed on December the 22th. However, we asked participants to fill out the daily assessments across Christmas time. The results of these daily assessments are available in this file. Therefore, possible answers are right (statement does apply) or wrong (statement does not apply) Perceived Variability and Ratability of diary items[2] Im Folgenden möchten wir Ihnen Fragen zur täglichen Umfrage stellen, die sie im Verlauf der Tagebuchstudie ausgefüllt haben. The following questions are concerning the daily survey you completed during the dairy study. For every attribute or statement please state two things: First, we would like to know your opinion about how strong you have varied in the last 12 weeks in your judgment about every attribute (e.g. Did you vary a little in respect to helpfulness?). Important: We are not interested in how well an attribute applies to you (e.g. if you see yourself as a helpful person) but rather in what do you think about how strong your daily evaluation of an attribute differed over the last 12 weeks. Therefore, at hand is a six-point answer format from “not at all” to “very strong”. Secondly we would like you to state for every attribute or statement how easy its evaluation was (e.g. How easy was the daily evaluation of the attribute „helpful“?). Therefore, at hand is a six-point answer format from “very easy“ to “very difficult”. Furthermore, it is very important for data collection that we get to know if you are well acquainted with other participants of the Flip study. Finally, we would like to know if and when important life events had occurred during the dairy study. The following questions are about various life events from different areas. Please remember the last weeks and decide whether these specific life events have taken place in your life. In addition, please specify when they occurred and how positive or negative they were for you. You have now completed most of the questionnaire. Finally, we would like you to complete two tests. Please read each instruction carefully. In the first block you will see several rows of words. In each row there is one word, which maybe familiar to you. When you have found it, please press the button under this word. Important: For an appropriate completion of the following tasks, you have to close all tabs in your browser. To start the test please press the ‘Go on‘ - Button. The second task starts now. On top of each of the following pages you will see a pattern with a gap. According to the size, each of the pieces underneath fits into the gap of the pattern, but only one piece supplements the pattern correctly. Have a thorough look at every piece. When you have found the right piece, press the respective number key on the keyboard. At the beginning the patterns are simple and then become more and more difficult. To start the test please press the ‘Go on‘ - Button.
